DIY EGR Valve change

Featured Replies

My friend has a Octy MK1 1.9TDi 05reg and is just out of warranty. He wants to supply and fit an EGR valve himself and wants to know if it can be done easily?

The car has no fault codes but the EGR on there is seriously clogged so he don,t want to clean it he just wants to replace it if cheap enough which i think they are?

Would it need VAGCOM after fitting it? there are no codes to clear though.

Any help would be appreciated:thumbup:

It is easy enough, but cheap the vales aint. Used ones normally go for about £60. I think they are about £150 new but could be wrong.

Thanks Lummox:thumbup: It does look straight forward on his.Just thought it might need a VAGCOM setup after.

It's a POC to remove - unclip/remove hose and 3x 6mm allen head bolts.

Unplug any vacuum hoses, remove the o-ring and just clean it - it's a messy job but really easy. Figure about 1-2 cans of carb cleaner and a collection of old toothbrushes/bits of wood to scrape.

Save yourself some money tbh....

Yeah - for £60 I'd put in the labour to clean the original one. No point splashing out on them.

Would also be worth removing the inlet manifold, if up to it, and giving that a bit of a clean as well.

what he said. I scraped about 1-2cm of blacky sticky goo out of the inlet manifold - it's just another 6x 6mm allen bolts. Can re-use the metal gasket.

Another 1-2 cans of carb cleaner.

Car will run soooo much more smoother after you do it, but it's really very messy work......(ask me how I know )

Cheers Basil for info and Devontopia for follow up:thumbup:

Thanks MBames for pics,i remember seeing them before when you done it.

I will suggest all this to him and see what he wants to do as long as its not me who cleans it all  maybe i will just supervise!!

iirc there are 3 allen bolts to undo, two are easy and one has something slightly in the way, but certainly nothing that a few seconds of fiddling about won't cure.

I think I use a toothbrush, some petrol and a screwdriver :-)
