N95 Problem-any techy types your help would be much appreciated

Featured Replies

Hi

I have had my N95 on T Mobile for about 10 months now, and just lately its developed 3 faults.

I was wondering if anybody has had the same probs/or shed some light on it before I have it in to the repair centre

1. The earpiece is so quiet now, its really hard to hear, even on full volume. Does that mean it needs a new earpiece? On speakerphone the sounds fine btw

2. When I press the keys now, it does a high pitched shriek instead of the usual beep it used to do. Like a metallic sounding beep (hard to describe) Is that linked to the earpiece problem, and can it be fixed?

3. Finally, the third problem, which is the most annoying of all, I cant browse on the internet.

I pay monthly for the web and walk service, but when I press the hot key the screen flashes and doesnt connect anymore, or even accessing it off the main menu it does the same.

I can search the internet with the search application, but when I try to browse any of the websites, the screen just flashes and doesnt connect.

I have been in touch with T Mobile and they sent me some new connection settings, but they have'nt done anything to solve it

Anybody had this/any of the above problems?

Any help would be most welcome, as not being able to get on the internet, is making my days at work unbearable :(

Thanks in advance

Damian

Possible I suppose, when using speakerphone different speakers are used.

I am not sure, have you changed the keypad tones?

Not sure on the web problem, what firmware version are you running?

what firmware version are you running?

Device Software is V11.0.026

With regards to problem number 3,

I had the same happen to me with mine. The browser would just flash open and close again. I'm also using T-Mobile's modified firmware still. After changing loads of settings and resetting the phone back to factory default it still didn't work.

In the end I re-installed the latest firmware using Nokia's software updater, obviously backing up everything before hand. I believe the latest T-Mobile branded firmware is v12.00.013. I haven't tried debranding mine yet.

You can get the updater here: Nokia UK - Download - Device software update. Just read all the blurb first. :)

Not sure about problem 1 and 2 though, sorry.

Thanks for that, I am downloading it now

Just a quick question

what should I back up and how do I do it? :o

Do you have Nokia's PC Suite installed? It has a backup and restore utility, which allows you to backup and restore contacts, settings, messages etc. I've done this few times without any problems, but as you'll be upgrading to the next version of the firmware, it's often recommend starting with a nice clean fresh install.

Unfortunately I'm typing this as I'm going out the door. I can go into a bit more detail when I get in if no one else does while I'm gone. Hope that helps in the mean time! (I'm sure Neo_VR will be along to shortly with some great advise  )

Install the latest version of the Nokia PC Suite from the Nokia website, if you haven't already. Then run the Backup app within there, before going onto performing the firmware upgrade.

EDIT: Just seen Ant's response. Yeah, shout back on here with any more questions or issues you come across. There's plenty on here who'll be able to help

The first 2 are related.

You have some dirt in the ear piece and/or the metal strip has popped in ie should be ( now is ).

The ear piece is only a strip of metal rather that a full blown speaker, and it's easy for dirt to affect them, or 'pop' them the wrong way.

If you're carefull, use a vacuum with the small attachment and run it over the ear piece. It's how I fix mine. Just dont hold it over the speaker, as you will FUBAR it!

Just downloading Nokia PC Suite now but I wont have chance to do anything with it until tomorrow.

Just wanted to say a big thankyou for all your help up to now guys

Im sure I will be needing a bit more help before this gets sorted though :o

I've had a search on the net but can't find anything about the first two problems....... Did find a few articles relating the browser crashing on start up and it seems that three things have worked for different people.....

Quick reset / remove battery etc...

Restore to factory default settings

Software / firmware update.

I'd say if the firmware isn't up to date go for the firmware update but make sure you back-up the contents of the phone first.

Give us a shout if ya need to matey.

Cheers

Dave.

Ah.......................

I gave mine a proper whack and it fixed the problem about 6 months ago :o:rofl:

The small buttons on the side - especially the rocker type button - are starting to be an issue with the N95

No problem, let us know how you get on. :)

Edit: Actually, thinking about it, my ear piece went all crappy on me too when I first got it.... a hard blast of air from my lungs fixed it for me.

Yep, go with the firmware upgrade and see how things go. If not, consider visiting a Nokia Service Centre to see if you can get any lingering issues sorted, as it's under a year old and still under warranty. There may be an issue if they put down any problem to user fault, but it's worth a go...

That'll fix it too ;)

IIRC the phones that say Made by Nokia (china factory) did have a bunch of fault rocker switches.

N series phones have 2years EU warranty, and it can be fixed by a repair centre whilst you wait.

My issue is the top slide buttons have nearly all lost their silver paint! If there are no good buy-back deals when the N96 is out, I'll get them replaced under warranty and get a proporta alu-crystal case to stop it happening again.

Ok guys

I hoovered the earpiece and its fine now, fantastic

However, I am having big trouble with the software update.

I have backed up everything on Nokia PC Suite and then I go to the update software, Plug my cable in and it syncs with the phone, all well and good.

Its when I am installing the new software, after about 30 secs it does the disconnect hardware noise several times then loses sync with my phone. PC Suite disconnects leaving the software updater still saying 15 mins to completion.

I have left it for half an hour just in case, but it never progresses any further as the phones no longer synced. Nothing you do then can shut it down, and I know your not supposed to remove the cable but its the only thing you can do and then shut the software updater using windows task manager :(

I then have to remove the battery for a minute on the phone and then restart it, and luckily it still has the old software on.

I have tried several times, to update the software now, including using different usb ports, but the result is always the same. The der der noise (as when you disconnected hardware)

Any ideas?

This no internet on my phone is killing me :(

Oh dear... :(

I've had that happen to me once before, but after a restart of my pc and phone, the upgrade worked. Still not sure what the underlying problem was.

I'm not sure what to suggest next really, other than perhaps taking it to a Nokia Service Centre. :(

That's ok, sorry I can't be much more help. If I think of anything else you could try, I'll let you know. I know how annoying that problem is so hopefully you get it sorted soon.

Is it an XP or Vista computer that you're doing the updating on????

I've just done a google search for "N95 firmware update hangs" and come up with numerous articles on having problems updating the firmware on vista machines but which work ok when doing it on an XP machine.

Might be the cause of the problem???

Cheers

Dave.

I can confirm that I had this problem when trying to update my firmware from a Vista lapotp. I decided not to risk trying it again and went to an XP desktop from where it worked fine.

My phone powered off OK though - didn't need to remove the battery. I was mightily relieved when it started up though!

I am using it on Vista.

Might have to try from my mums xp

Thanks for the shout

Fingers crossed it will work

Does anybody know, would it 'brick' if you are using a Non-Nokia USB cable? Haven't Googled it yet, but maybe somebody knows?

As I use the same mini-usb lead for everything I can say no. Mini-usb is mini-usb.

One thing regarding the hanging.

Ensure you arent going through a USB hub, and IIRC closing down PC suite (via taskbar/systray icon) helps on Vista machines.

Are you running the latest version of PC suite? (6.86.9.0)

  • Author

Just downloaded it so it is the latest

version is 6.86.9.3

Using the usb port on the side of my laptop.

I have'nt tried it shutting down PC Suite yet, I thought you had to keep it open.

Might try that tomorrow then.

Cheers
