How to: Retro-fit 'coming home lights'

Managed to get this working on my felicia!
It can be done without an auto headlight controller but I have wired it up to this.
Basically here is how I wired it up:
relay:
Permanant live to pin 30 and 85
Pin 87 to switched live on the auto lights controller with a diode to stop voltage leaking back into the switched live in the car
Earth from the door lock switch to pin 86.
So basically as the doors are unlocked there is a live supplied to the switched live on the auto headlight box which then turns the lights on after a short delay.
Now working on a deactivation switch on the dash which will be a second sidelight switch in the blank space.

I'm afraid that I made comment about the existance of various retro-fit kits being "not widely known about within the VAG parts dealership" - and only coming to light as NOS being sold on Ebay but got shot down by someone who thought they knew better!

Also has anyone managed to fit some kind of timer to this circuit so the sidelights remain on for a specified time?

Thanks for the reply on which lights come on Rich. I only wondered as I wouldn't do the same myself, as I have xenons and wouldn't want these coming on every time :) And thinking what Mercedes do in particular with their system, when the side and foglights illuminate.
Steve
the option is in Vag-Com but just to confirm the roomster has not got the controller to allow it, so it could be expensive to do or indeed head the way that Fab 12V has if it was needed.

Don't know about this version, but the factory relay does not activate the warning buzzer (someone mentioned that in the other thread I linked above).:)

Ideas to play with -"slug" relay with reverse potential diode or with a big electrolitic capacitor ( of sufficient voltage rating ,connected correct way round, else BANG)
OR if that fails operate power relay via suitable smaller relay, slugged as above .(Capacitor slugs -case of suck it and see -lot depends on sizeof capacitor and resistance of relay -time constant circuit ,in that capacitor charges( to 69%) in CR seconds ,and also can be assumed to lose charge at the same rate )
If interested in idea -read up on time constant circuits .
Going back to ancient times, there used to be dozens of electronic 555 circuits to do this ,but electronics may not be everybodies cup of tea -hence initial ideas .

Not so much of the ancient times there 555's are still around, cheap and dead easy to setup,
If you want to really go back in time try building monostables with discrete components (carbon based resistors and to5 can transistors) and getting them to work accurately and consistently on a repeat basis! or if you are really wanting old try valves! (tubes to you younger guys)

Anyhoo, the biggest problem is it turns on whenever you open a door - really annoying when you drop off/collect passengers or get something out of the car. What I was wondering is if it's possible to wire it into the door locking - so when the locks fire it switches the relay, but I'm not sure how they would turn out again that way as I imagine they will only turn off when the locks activate again.
Also - you can't easily use the sidelights as they are wired for left and right, and not as a pair (I assume cos of the indicators acting as parking lights).
All I can offer I'm affriad.

I'm thinking wiring it as the first post but putting a diode in series with the interior light, this would stop the 'reversal' and stop the lights coming on with the interior light in normal use??
does anyone have the wiringdiagram? i could do it easily then
Cheers

Thats the key from the Haynes manual they came from if it's needed at all although it's not very clear.

And the left is the interior lighting C.D which I think should be the right one.

Just another relay for the fogs.
Really interested in doing this myself. But don't want the headlights coming on just subtle sides and fogs.
