raspberry pi + win embedded + vcds

Featured Replies

Has anyone tried this?

Won't work - Don't believe there is an ARM version of Windows

Depends then if Rosstech have written an ARM version of VCDS. I suspect not.

Oh well, it was worth a few minutes of consideration.

I suspect that there won't be an ARM version of the drivers for the lead.

The ARM chip on the Pi doesn't support windows.

Various threads on the foundations pages.

This is why things like this will never reach a mainstream. Brilliant educational tool, or for a small form factor media centre or other application.

For general use... nah... 'cause people write software for x86 architecture. We're only really just seeing mainstream software being written in x64, and that's years old!

Well I suppose virtualizing it is possible. But then the processing power becomes the issue. Running windows on an arm platform is possible, but it takes an hour to boot and lags like hell.

That joke of a cpu in the Pi, while skillfully designed, its nowhere near enough. Now say the quad core from the One X, then were talking.

Yeah but the Raspberry Pi was not designed for running Windows on. It was designed for Linux, and was primarily designed to get to the classroom for kids to learn programming.

Whilst it would be undoubtedly awesome to get some of the stuff we are used to running on our Desktop PC's on a tiny machine that is no bigger than a credit card - I do think a lot of people are missing the point of it.

If size is the issue and you don't mind paying more than the PI you could look at a Pico ITX setup.

Now that's more like it - they are x86 chips.

I used to have a VIA EPIA ITX based machine years ago - it even ran Windows Server 2003!

There's no need to run windows embedded on it, what are you going to do in windows embedded that you can't do in Linux, there's big potential for the raspberry pi in automotive, attach a small screen and do a bit of python/c programming and you have a very nice trip computer that can do much more than a standard trip computer, it would s able to run diagnostics on the engine and would also be a much better and more accurate way of measuring the 0-60 of a car. I myself am doing my third year project for university using a pi overclocked to 1ghz
