Porsche 924 project! (now TWO of them!)

Featured Replies

Well, time to start this now as the car is in my possession! 1981 Porsche 924 - only two years younger than me, but seemingly from the drive home, better built, more reliable, and better on fuel....

Much more to follow. Work on faded paint, and other bits of cleaning up. Think I am going to be breaking out a rattle can of guards red in places.... Hoping the majority comes up spanking with a good machining!

Video from my DR400G as I followed my mate to the garage where it shall be given MOT inspection and hopefully pass! Already got insurance quote! ;)

Sadly the above car has been resigned to donor only, and I have all the carpet out to go in my car, eventually. As an aside, my main car is now back on the road, and plan to use it over the summer a

  • **** it, just get a tin of red gloss, a 1" brush. Job done

I hope its less of a dog than the megane.

Deserves to come up nice

Well, bit tatty around the edges, but thats what I aim to sort. Roughly £80 to get through MOT, and I'm getting cambelt done as worth doing.

Have classic car insurance sorted from 1st July and then will get 6 months road tax and then enjoy it as a second motor for a while whilst I fix it up.

Jason, you really like your cars to be dogs, first the Mongrel, now this. :p

These are proper cool cars Jas! My mate has one for his first car, hes got a thread on pistonheads!

Is yours the turbo or n/a?

  • Author

Just N/A - proper bog standard one, but its one of the early ones - 1981. Model only released in '78 I believe. The turbos came in around 84? And the S I think was only 86 to 89. Seems to go well for a 2 litre, but I've yet to drive it. Exhaust sounded nice following it back from Yeovil.

Flat 4 or inline 4? Flat should sound better

This is the fabled van engined audi :giggle:

edit: just wiki'd and it is an inline 4, shame.

  • Author

t'is just a normal 4 although appears to be a rock solid engine. Both parked on the drive.

Both on the drive although I can't touch the paint until into next week.

Brief experimenting with the Kestrel after work today. Unfortunately found the front offside wing needs replacing really, and the bonnet will need repainting too.

  • Author

Well, the nearside wing turned out to be even worse, so I thought I'd see what some 800 and 1200 grit wet and dry would do, and then a good polish! Came up OK, big improvement. Much more to do tomorrow / weekend though!

Some nasty marks on the top edge of the wing! All white and horrible, but where did it go?! Sanded to hell!! That's where! :D Just a shame the bonnet is a repainting job.

Job done

Roller would sort it Dai ;)

I've been trying to work out if there was a way I could attach some wet and dry to my Kestrel orbital polisher but I think that might do more harm than good, so I shall continue to do by hand.

True paint hiding behind side indicator

Much happier now. Paint needs refining by building up with finer wet & dry, but very chuffed right now

Rear quarter before

and after. Still needs refining but pleased! A good 3 to 4 hours work has gone into this bit.

Good work so far dude.... Looks like it may take a while to get it where you want though!

Looking good so far.

I'll have to remember to look out for both cars in August when i'm down that way. B)

Well, to be frank now, the car's poor paint has been pi**ing me off, mainly because there is SO much to remove which is slow going! So I took the rather brave (aka foolish) step of buying some 240 grit wet & dry, with the aim of serious cutting, then refining after....

Well, I think it was a good move myself!

A few minutes in a previously totally untreated area of the bonnet, using sanding pad to spread out force evenly. (Area on right done with much higher grade paper)

9thJuly1.jpg

Thought I'd use a small square bit on a white milky area, as a test

9thJuly2.jpg

What white milky area? :D (I know there is still some, but this was literally about 2 minutes work)

9thJuly3.jpg

I now have grades 800, 1200, 1500, 2000 and 2500 for refining, but to be honest I will probably just run over with 1500, then start the flatting back with compound paste. :)

Jason, did you see the wheeler dealer tv program when they 'mopped' a similar red 924?

You will find the video

  • Author

Yeah - this one is way beyond mopping though. Been doing more every time I can....

Good work, Jason :)

Well, drove to Hereford and back for a new interior. It needs feeding, but loving a bit of leather at the moment! :D

Another update. Spent 90 minutes on the bonnet this evening, using 240 grit in combination with a big rubber pad to cover bigger areas, and then focussed 240 grit on smaller spots of more stubborn old paint. Its beginning to get somewhere now. Just looking forward to the refinement stage like a bout of cholera. ;)
