Mtec Drilled and Grooved brakes.

Featured Replies

Good afternoon all!

Has anyone used the company Mtec Brakes before and if so would you recommend them and what are your opinions?

I have just been given a quote of £119.99 for front and rear drilled and grooved discs to fit my 2.0 tdi Sport, 288mm Vented front and 255mm solid rear.

Matt.

Yeah used them on my vrs would advise using standard pads cos I used EBC green stuff pads and after a year started getting a noise under braking so checked it out and there was no grooves left on the inside face of the front discs (piston side of caliper) and the pads looked like new only done 9500 miles so think pads were to hard for them so had to fit another set with standard pads.brakes were really good the difference was like night and day but

I'm considering mintex pads all round to go with them so nothing too disc hungry! I think £120 is a good price and with mintex pads front and back for less than £50 im onto a winner, just want people's thoughts and experience on the company and quality of disc?!

I had them for my prev Toyota with mintex pads. In my opinion pads were dusty and i have heard te same from other people. But other than that they were brill and looked good on the car too. Worth a try deffo.

Im using them only had them on two weeks though they seem ok and look the part. Im using them with Skoda economy pads they don't squeel or clunk but the shims are a bad fit it's abit of an effort getting the pads lined up and clicked in especially the inner ones

I have MTEC discs in just now. Just grooved and were coated black and mintex pads.

They seems quite good and the hub is still coated black so no rust there either. Obviously the face of the disc is no longer black however the grooved sections are. Looks good.

No, they wanted £45 for mintex pads all round and I've found them for £39 on ebay, not bought them yet as i'm still searching.

Genuine OEM 312mm disks are £25 each so I can't say I see why you'd pay more.

They also include your protective silver coating (Zinc usually).

You don't need the grooves for modern brake pads, except to keep the pad surface ever so slightly flatter, but that wears your pads much more quickly.

There are many race car series, where they have to use flat disks and the grooves etc are mainly for looks these days.

Because the grooves and holes reduce the mass of the brake disk, then you can actually find that as the disk heats up more quickly due to this lower mass (all front disks on the Octy II are vented anyway), then the braking will be worse than on stock disks.

I'd save the money, stay with the OEM/Flat disks and then buy better pads (EBC Red, DS2500 or A.N other pad ) that are suited to your desired use, be that road or track.

The hubs on OEM discs look crap when they rust.

Having said that back in the day on my old Mark IV Golf GTi when I upgraded it to the 312 setup, I used new OEM 312 discs and used black BBQ paint on the Hubs to stop the rusty look which worked well.

Masked up and gave the hubs a few coats of BBQ paint, using my paint stripping heat gun to cure the paint between coats.

They help disipate water great by channeling it through the grooves and drilled holes.

Can't say I've ever had a problem with either OEM pads or EBC red pads and water.

That plus when the disk is spinning that fast, the water won't be hanging around long enough to get a chance to be channeled out, let alone going through a hole in the surface.

On the rust front, I've seen some that do it, but can't say I've ever had that issue on the OEM ones myself.

As you say though, a small tub of hammerite silver/black or whatever would deal with it and you'll probably find that all discs rust to some point.

They are after all high carbon steel.
