New Owner 1.9 TDI Sport

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I am new to ownership and have just purchased the above. It has 40k miles. Is there anything anybody can tell me that I should watch out for or have done (common faults) etc?

Thanks,

Kam

First thing I would ask is, has it had the timing belt changed? When I had mine they were due at 40k or 4 years. Great strong economical engines if a bit vocal.

One of the things I've yet to check but usually I get this done anyway irrespective of whether it has or not for peace of mind. Thanks for the pointer though.

I think also it is recommended with the PD engine to change the water pump at the same time, costs little more and is good practice. (sorry if I'm telling you how to suck eggs).

No probs mate, I shall bear this in mind. It's good to know such things considering my last car apparently died by fire due to what was supposedly a common fault which I did not know about.

The only other thing is to make sure you use the correct oil in it. PD engines don't like anything other than the 505.01, or the 507 spec oil if you have a dpf. These are the only ones you should use. Anything else and you will toast your camshafts as many folk have found out when they have just put any old fully synthetic oil in the engine. This problem normally only happens to engines that have been DIY maintained by people who don't read the handbook or understand the important of the vw spec oil with the extreme pressure agents in them. The camshaft in the PD does a lot of work, not just opening and closing the valves but operating the unitary injector pumps too so the correct oil is vital. The PD engine is good for huge mileages without any problems if maintained properly. Sorry if you already know this stuff but it cannot be repeated too much as there is still a lot of confusion about the oil to use in the PD engines. Enjoy your car, it's a good one!

As said above but no 1.9,s have a DPF fitted.

Enjoy the car.I have been after one of those for a long time but seem to be hard to get hold of,around my area at least.

1.9 in a MK2 is a good combination :)

Loved the 1.9 PD engine in my Golf Plus, economical, powerful, reliable etc. As above - MUST use correct PD oil.

Thanks for the update on the oil guys. I'll def bare this in mind. Do I just get it from dealer or will decent motor places also have it. Also does anybody know how much I will need when having it serviced and oil changed.

As in how many litres when doing the oil change

approx. 4.5l

Nothing more to add other than the correct oil, i have a 1.9TDI and the newer 1.6CR, Both excellent.

Back Again Peeps,

I've been doing some research on and off the forum and need some more help please.

Firstly I asked on my Newbie post but nobody got back to me, does anybody know what the BRI in BRISKODA is for?

Secondly, as asked above with regards to the oil, is this a dealer specific item or can I get such by asking for the numbers mentioned above from any motor dealer.

I would also like to clarify the difference between PD and CR. To help me understand, can someone please explain these so I know what I am talking about.

Then we get onto the differences between the MK2 Fabia's. I'm in the process of repairing my car which has had front end accident damage. I need a front bumper as mine is damaged. I would like to know if all variants of the MK2 bumpers will fit universally or are there certain ones which will require modification to fit. I ask as it is looking difficult to source a front bumper for the sport as this has the sport lip. I want to know if I can remove the lip off my bumper, can I get this fitted to a standard bumper to look like stock.

Alternatively, can you please post pics of your front bumper (with or without chin spoilers/lips etc) so I can see the differences and maybe choose an alternative.

Finally does anybody know if the airbag on a 3 post steering wheel is the same as on a 4 post wheel to help me source the correct one.

Apologies for the long post, I wasn't sure whether to split the questions onto sperate posts but I thought I'd start here first. As always, any response is appreacited. I will try and get pics up soon as I intend to keep record my progress and hopefully will show how I'm getting on in the forum.

Thanks

Kammy

You don't need to buy the oil from a dealer mate. Any shop that sells oil should have it - Halfords etc.

PD and CR are different fuel delivery systems. Try googling "pump Duse" and "common rail diesel".
