hand brake tighten

Featured Replies

Hi my vrs has just clocked 10000 miles and the hand brake feels like it needs a tighten. Any body know how to do this on a car with jumbo box?

I had the same on my Octavia Scout. The position of the handbrake became higher and higher before it would hold the car.

When in for a service I asked them to tighten it up and they said they'd need to strip the brakes to do so!

Well thats a pain. Just have to put up with it. Though it be as easy as a ajustment screw on hand brake lever like on my previous two vag cars.

It might be as simple as that, my dealer may have been hoping I'd say "OK, go ahead".

Fair does. Thank you silver. Just been out to have a look and realised the rear storage box unclips and folds alway down and behind there is where the ajustment bracket is.

I have just had new rear discs and the pedal is moving quite a way. I have tighten hand brake. Can you over tighten it? It clicks 3 or 4 times.

For the UK this site http://www.ukmot.com/MOT%20test/handbrake.asp says there should be six clicks for full engagement. Always worth checking that the rear disks and pads are ok but I assume they would have no bearing whatsoever on the cable adjustment as the rear brake assembly has its own auto-adjustment?

Thanks will have a look when kids in bed

When brake fluid replaced like I just had at a service do they have to bleed system. Could have air in possibly?

It's a 10mm spanner and you need to be aware that it is very easy to over tighten it so that the rear pads drag and overheat the discs.

I speak from experience as I adjusted mine so it had 4 clicks and held well with the vehicle. It also rolled easily with the handbrake off. It wasn't until after a bit of a drive I noticed that the rear near side was very hot. I shouldn't have cut corners and should have jacked the rear up to check for bind. Lesson learnt.

I have 4 clicks so might loosen a bit as it feels like they are dragging. Have to see if pedal then spongy and travelling

Have always set handbrake to 5/6 clicks fully on on my cars. The first couple of clicks do nothing in way of braking but it makes sure the pads/shoes are away from the discs/drums.

Handbrake is cable operated, not hydraulic and is separate from the service brakes. If the pedal is spongy, you have another issue, probably air in the system.
