  1. For what it's worth, I once had a Boxster tiptronic go almost brake-free while approaching the new chicane at oulton park, at just over 100mph. Turned out to be gravel in the caliper or sensor because someone in the previous session had gone for a detour through the gravel trap! Scary when it happened but it's amazing how much the gears will slow you when you need it.
  2. Yep I removed the TB from the manifold, and just as you say that's where all the gunk was, although not much of it. I have a Forge 007p, I believe with a yellow spring.
  3. Ok, have cleaned throttle body today (it was actually really clean already, as was the inlet hose) but it's made no difference. I hooked it up to freebie vag-com and checked for engine fault codes but there weren't any. Anyone have any ideas what I can try from here?

  5. Hi all My vRS has been having this boost issue for a while now, which I keep forgetting to sort because it's not a major prob - it just shows up under certain circumstances. But I'd like to get it sorted and start tracking down why it's doing it. It idles almost perfectly, hardly any fluctuation in revs at all, and has probably never had a throttle body clean in 95k (I have a new gasket ready and will be doing this on saturday). So no issue there. On heavy or full throttle again it's fine, it pulls smooth and strong in any gear. However if I use say 50% throttle, I can feel the boost level fluctuating. It's nothing severe but I don't think it should be doing this. It was remapped back in January and I noticed the uneveness on the drive home, but I think it's slightly more noticeable now than it was back then. I don't think it's a boost leak, since it's absolutely fine on full throttle, so I'm suspecting it's the N75 valve? I guess at 95k it would be well past it's best anyway, and they seem to be known for causing probs? The last time it was checked for fault codes was in May, and there was nothing relating to engine or drivetrain, just a fault because the aircon needed regassing. Any ideas or suggestions wilkommen.
  6. I trek down the M61 then the east lancs every day to work, near Salford quays. In a silver Octy vRS with briskoda stickers in the rear windows. The only prob is that salford is awash with silver Octavias...all the taxi firms use em!!
  7. Do you think a class 1 police driver would make a turning, in the knowledge that it would almost certainly cause an accident? We weren't there, don't know all the facts, and I'm sure Gary's driving record is impeccable, but to be honest I've been in situations where I've had to take evasive action to avoid an accident (as I'm sure we all have) and the one thing that was definitely not occuring to me at the time was "its my right of way". I have a hard time understanding how someone could contribute to an accident by not taking evasive when they could have done, because no-one wants to be stood at the side of the road explaining to a copper what happened, along with the statement forms dropping through the post and the whole thing dragging on for months. For that alone, I've rather avoid the accident and continue on my merry way. Can't understand anyone who would do otherwise tbh.
  8. Bloke who used to work with had exactly the same attitude as yourself after an incident where a biker ended up dead in a ditch and it was partly his fault. A year down the line, when the bullishness had worn off and he'd discovered that there was now two kids without a Daddy, he was absolutely destroyed by it. He tells me it'll always haunt him. Not saying that it would have the same effect on everyone, but my point is even if the person does 'deserve it' I'd bet that their family doesn't so we still have a responsibility to avoid an accident for their sake. I've no doubt done stupid things over the years that could've ended badly, were it not for someone else taking action and being a better driver than me in the process. I also believe that just because someone has a momentary lapse of judgement/sanity it does not mean they 'deserve it'. If we all got what we deserved on the road there wouldn't be many drivers left.
  9. I think there's a lot of variance depending on where you live. Up here (Preston, Lancs, Manchester etc) most riders are very well behaved and I see the same bunch on my commute every day, no probs with their riding whatsoever. Take the M25 on the other hand, and it's complete open season & psycho time. That's really the only place I've ever seen anyone riding the way described in the posts here. But I have to say the car drivers are just as bad in my opinion. That just seems to be the way it is in certain regions though. Where all this stereotyping becomes genuinely dangerous is when people react aggressively or dangerously towards bikers without even giving them a chance. I've seen some of the bikers on my commute have their paths intentionally blocked by car drivers who were obviously furious about having to sit in traffic. Let's be honest though, if that bloke in the car had the choice of sitting in the queue or filtering past it himself, what do you think he would do? To be honest though, for every 1 bike I see behaving badly or dangerously I must see 50-100 cars. So for me the bigger problem is still car drivers.
  10. Why not just take it out for a bit of a spanking? Worked on my Golf TDI especially when I had the sticky-vanes problem.
  11. I think mine's got the yellow spring. When it was first fitted it was a bit abrupt in its action, for example when you shut the throttle you would get a slight surge before it vented. After a few thousand miles it has settled in and is very smooth in its operation. Haven't ever heard the noise you're referring to, all I get is a 'psst' noise which is pretty quiet even with the PiperX panel fitted.
  12. Not sure if this is any use to you, but my p-torque stage 1 map made 211bhp and 230lb-ft running 18psi peak and settling at 15psi. You've got a decent wedge of torque there, any chance you can post your dyno graph up? At the end of the day forget the figures it's how it drives that counts. Give me a smooth driveable map any day over a peaky one that looks good on paper but doesn't do the car any good. As others have said, you are seeing the limitations of the SMIC amongst other things so at this point you either have to accept those limitations or decide to go FMIC instead. I had the lid off the airbox last weekend and decided it wasn't worth the aggro of de-finning it (not unless someone can prove a reasonable increase) but I will be doing the pikey arch mod soon. My reasons for that are, if it didn't do anything then why would it be there on the 225bhp models? It must help.
  13. Tony took me out for a a spin in the milkfloat on Saturday. I have to say I'm quite impressed. Alhough it's by no means a proper drivers car, there's enough poke to keep it entertaining, gadgets aplenty and it's like Tony is Captain Kirk in his very own USS Prius. Plus it has some neat little guages that tell you how much Tofu reserves you have, and how many polar bears you've not killed by taking the prius instead of walking.
  14. Dammit 51 pages to root through to find the fullsize version of this girls ar5e Worth it though!
  15. I'd expect the usual running-in advice applies... - Don't labour the engine, ie its better to be running at 3000rpm up a hill than a gear higher at 1500rpm - Yes you could vary the speed a little, as that presumably varies the load Also yes you should give the turbo time to cool down at the end of a journey or after hard driving. Usually that's a case of taking it easy for the last couple of miles and/or letting the car idle for a couple of minutes. At the end of the day, the car will already have been hammered through the gears on the factory rolling road anyway So don't worry too much about it. I've long been a believer that the running in period is at least as much about brakes, clutch etc as it is about the engine.
  16. Tish!! Sensible...pah!! I've got two kids....and bought the vRS. It's just as practical, fuel economy aside! I can get 44mpg on a decent run with the family and kit all onboard, as long as it's (a) not wet/windy/cold and ( I stick to 70-ish. It gets 37mpg most days on my 30 miles commute to work, and my old Golf TDi only used to get 44mpg on the same journey. Life's too short to drive a diesel. <ducks for cover>
  17. Looking good there please post back on what difference you notice on the road one thing though...I would add some rubber washers to the brackets to damp the vibes out a bit perhaps?

  19. Are the EGR valves a diesel-only thing, or will my 1.8T have one?
  20. Bodge, me owd china, me old chestnut, old bean vRS's don't like being driven so sedately, plain and simple. They like to be given a bit of welly every now and then, so I suggest if you're gonna continue to potter around like this you might consider swapping for a diesel, or a Kia Rio. Must try harder. On a sidenote, when you gonna stop mincing about and get it remapped?
