  1. Sorry "O" level, I am so old it was GCEs nearly half a century ago.
  2. Indeed, ethanol, the OH link replacing one of the six Hydrogen bonds. Petrol nominally C8H18 but in reality a soup of other hydrocarbon molecules. Only got a C in chemistry at I level but always found it interesting and useful when going on to do Mech Eng and thermodynamics. Good knows what the formula was of residual fuel were burnt in the massive two. Stroke diesel engines.
  3. Looking at the tax situation this liquid fuel is taxed at 58 pence per litre plus a VAT rate of 20%. Have to factor this in to the fact that carrying a fully charged car does not add to the weight and the VAT charge of the fuel loaded at home is only at 5%. Apparently this petrol fuel is just about to change in the UK to double the amount of oxygen in it, ie C2H5-OH, and as well as charging for a fuel that contains Oxygen, which is a freely available gas in the air, this new version of fuel, to the UK, gives less miles per litre which in combination with the every decreasing fuel tank size means even less range in the car leading to both range and cost anxiety.
  4. EPA must be the one largest organisations with involvement in this. They have said...... (US gallons quoted of course which is a US gallon is only 3.785 litres compared to a UK gallon at 4.54 litres) The US has been using E10 since 1979. A litre of Ethanol has only 2/3rds the calorific value to "normal" petrol so a 5% change in Ethanol content would give a 1.6% drop in calorific value by my maths. Sounds about right as long as the ignition system tweaks the spark timing one might think. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How much does 10 ethanol affect gas mileage? Assuming you were running straight gasoline and were then forced to switch to E10 (gasoline cut 10 percent with ethanol), your mileage will drop. The big question is by how much. The Environmental Protection Agency says E10 lowers mileage approximately 3 percent, which would drop your mileage from 19.6 to 19.0 mpg.
  5. Worse than if they were charging for watering the petrol down. Sandero uses the Renault engine range ie SCEs and TCEs so would affect much more than the Dacia range if true.
  6. I like the look of the LEAF Spy Pro as it give you the true size of the battery as well as battery temp, very important in a LEAF. Except one has to learn what I a GID is ! What is wrong with the good old Joule, kilojoule, MegaJoule, GigaJoule etc ? I think a GID is about tenth of a kWh but then 293 then sounds like a lot ie more than a 64 kWh LEAF would hold even at 104.3% of nominal.
  7. Still a while to go to get this right. I thought we would get some businesses, mcdonalds, tescos, starbucks doing something of a combined deal ie ten, fifeteen or twenty minute charge, with a coffee and chargers that work reliably, yet to come.
  8. People can be really selfish on not reporting outages, we know that from the 1600 chargers in the Source London stable and I expect we are both glad and sad to pull out of the charging network business and shot term , 6 minute interval care leasing we had with our 5,000 cars in Paris but I expect we are glad to be getting those patent payments from Mercedes for our solid state Lithium tech as well as supercapacitors. I think it is only the 6 and 12m buses we are involved in now in car transport but we still do plenty in battery banks I gather especially for remote places ie African interior etc. Good luck to Total, I think have a set of engineers going around fixing, checking upgrading these chargers is needed. Perhaps a reward system ie one gets credits, say 10 kWh, for being the first to report and a free kWh for the first ten others or something similar ?
  9. Hi George, do you use a VSD Bluetooth thingy that can tell your smart phone all the true values ie how much real battery is left, battery temp, efficiency of power usage ? The LeafSpy system looks very good to get several more miles out of the Leaf and for £25 for both the VCD Bluetooth thingy and App seems well worth it, same available for the 50 kw PSA platformed cars ?
  10. Oy yes based on the police all over are using similar doppler/laser speed measuring equipment and cars are manufactured with 10% speedo tolerance and 2% for tyre differentials but I tend to have the GPS fired up so with the oft 5% speed error on a Skoda I would have 90 kph on the speedo and 85 kph, at max, on the GPS. Despite France being my company HQ it is more usual that I am on holiday and it is the motorways I want to tank along and part from the tolls I prefer French motorway ie significantly faster averages allowed, less traffic mostly, except for those annoying pinch points like Le Harve. Doing 30k miles plus in normal years in the UK it s so frustrating to cruise around in the 70 mphs, 125 kph, or less. Then to hop over to Europe, especially Germany, and drive at 200 kph plus and neigh on 145-150 kph in France and Spain on the motorways.
  11. I would probably doing close to 90 kph on such a road but slow right down for the villages. I find the markings and camber an issue sometimes. It I is probably I am more relaxed and not in pushing it. difference in motorway speeds France to UK Is significant but UK to Germany is massive. Spanish motorway better too than UK.
  12. I have generally found the French speed limits appropriate for the roads they are set for. I find it interesting that they change Autoroutes from 130 to 110 kph in the rain which I think is an idea supported by statistics but it is 130 kph that I like as the 10% seems to apply there too so doing 145 kph, which is 90 mph cruising on their motor better than the UK's poxy 80 mph which one can get done at. Worth reminding travellers that one can get done if one is too quick between toll booths so if one does do a blast of 160 kph plus between the booths then stop just before the booths in the pull over area and wait for a few minutes so ones average speed drops down in to the legal numbers.
  13. Or go 4 wheels and tune....
  14. Yeah I know. It is all a bit mad at the moment. One daughter zooms across York as they have a scheme and users zoom in streets and pavements on the rental scooters. Appalling lights etc. I have fitted indicators and lights and happy to meet and go beyond the rental scooters rules.
  15. Was hoping to use on the numerous cycle paths here and down at the caravan park. Might register as a vehicle or change to a trike or 4 wheel mobility and tune that.
  16. Got myself a 800w zipper scooter.......... Already changed out all 3 Lead acid batteries for lithium ion ones so it probably weighs around 22 kgs instead of 40 kgs. Seems to top out at 25 kph so needs the gearing changed by either the smaller rear sprocket or a larger rear tyre I am thinking. Only running 3 8AH Li-ion batteries instread of 12AH Lead but still is many kilometers of riding. Have a 42v charger instead of 36v to match the lithium batteries and put some lights/indicators on it, must be a horn. Climb hills well too.
  17. Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs. When cars come down the Elbe, across the North Sea and arrive at say Immingham they go in to a customs warehouse, which is basically several tens of square of hard stand. When somebody wants that model it is called of for PD inspection and maybe fitting of different wheels etc and as this is happening the it is customs cleared ie imported. A car can be in the UK for hours, days, weeks, months or even years before it is technically imported ie customs declared in to the UK. Why it is a good idea to order something a bit different so it is a factory make else you could get something that has been sitting by the sea side for many many months. I use to be customs officer for the Portbury dock car storage area where we held up to 35,000 mainly Japanese and Spanish cars. Immingham deal with VAG as well as another port further down south. Skoda done pretty well in these hard times if one, ie SMMT, gauges registrations..... https://www.smmt.co.uk/vehicle-data/car-registrations/ YEAR-TO-DATE % Change MARQUE 2021 % Market share 2020 % Market share Skoda 38,102 3.69 29,233 3.53 30.34
  18. The Fabia I have is one of the first of the Mark 3, an SE but strangely seems to have a 5 speed gearbox matched with the 90 hp 1,422 cc diesel engine. In the VCA database it is not mentioned, oddly, but the various check tools for Clean Air areas confirm it is Euro 6. Having driven a 1.4 D in the Roomster a few ago, which was dreadful, I was very pleasantly surprised on the Fabia's get up an go as well fuel consumption of 60 to 75 mpg indicated. Has Android Auto and is 5 star safety, I seem to recall it was car of the year in 2015. Actually is a bit quicker than the 90 hp TCE Clio I have also. Been reading loads about the 62 kwh LEAF which is topping my next car at the moment now Rapid gate seems to be sorted. A blue tooth VCD and Leafspy seems to be a no brainer as well. Fabia 4 seems to miss a few tricks and no significant advantage over current models. Did the 2021 Vienna engine symposium give out any winners of engine catergories ? Manufacturer Model Description Transmission Engine Capacity Fuel Type Euro Standard Emissions CO [mg/km] Emissions NOx [mg/km] THC + NOx Emissions [mg/km] Particulates [No.] [mg/km] SKODA Fabia Hatchback 1.4 TDI 105PS M5 1422 Diesel 6 147 54 91 0 SKODA Fabia Hatchback 1.4 TDI 90PS M6 1422 Diesel 6 200 38 76 0 SKODA Fabia Hatchback 1.4 TDI 90PS 7speed DSG D7 1422 Diesel 6 128 44 76 0.1
  19. Torque not impressive, fuel consumption not impressive. My Fabia is 88 gm/km, allegedly and does 60 to 75 mpg, NOX and PMs not so good. If it was a one litre turbo petrol it could have been awesome performance. If they want really good mpg they need to drop the engine size to the size of the Twin Air Fiat engine. Currently mainstream car companies are stuck in their old tracks and not likely to survive and in ten years or so it will be all the Tech companies and possibly all the currently look will be consigned to the history bools for failing to innovate like Tesla has.
  20. Not a turbo engine sadly so not that effecient. Missed a trick here. Would have added a grand to the price but would have been awesome.
  21. 2 litre VRS are OK on 95 I recall, it was the Mk 1 1.8 litre VRS and the Twincharge VRS 1.4 litre that wanted the 98 octane or better I recall. Not sure about the 280 hp 2 litre Superb should run on with its higher specific output. Occasional tank of Momentum seemed like a fair idea when feeling flushed.
  22. One of the best way to calibrate ones speedo is not follow a truck thru these 50/60 zone as they will be doing, usually, a steady 54 mph on the GPS, at least in England anyways. The Police Commissioner for Bedford police wanted to nick driver and have no tolerance. Skoda speedo not one of the betters one apparently..... https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/106674/uk-speed-camera-tolerances-revealed-is-your-cars-speedo-accurate 5% error shown below. 23. George, if memory serves you have played the percentages game of speed camera static and average and, as the stats show, most motorist often cruise over 70 mph but within the 10+2 "tolerance". I would dread to think of the many thousands of hours drivers would spend on the road, the missed delivery slots if drivers, car and truck, had to stick to under 70 mph (GPS with a tolerance of no more than 1% inaccuracy). Dual carriageways are 70 mph nominal as long as they have a central reservation and long may that continue. As I have said I would rather we implemented a legal OK to drive at 75 mph with a "your F*cking nicked son at say 78 mph, sure well have the tech to do this ie high sampling and accurate GPS. I level playing field with agreed tech please. I did my time in the Speed Awareness Course when I hit the big 80 mph down Air Balloon hill on the A419, should have broke more and wasted that kenetic energy and added more CO2 to the dying Earth's air mass. Please can we have speed limits like France or even Germany does, it is a point of national shame, and economic efficiency that we do not. Would be happy to have a F1 style fuel flow limiter so the car cannot do less than say 50 mpg. Would encourage me to change my mark 3 Octy for a more aero efficient mark 4 which for the same hp has a some 6 mph higher top speed as it so aero efficient, 143 compared for 137 mph I recall for the same HP ie 150. PLus more safety features as standard.
  24. My boss just bought one of these castrated Volvos, Renault are doing the same thing I believe to this 180 kph speed limit. One of the cars on my short list is a Clio RS and maybe it would be good to get one before the law comes in and its long term value with be helped by such ISA laws or we just bight the bullet and go with the flow and get the track car, something like a Caterham, for those times when one want to blow the cobwebs out, and the motorcycle as well I hope. From what I have read these clever car systems will not stop the main accident for us motorcyclist which we are victims off which is a car making a right hand turn out of minor road and the bike, despite having right of way, then T-bones the car who has not "seen" the motorcyclist. I get even fathom how all these systems will fit and work on a motorbike and the cost they would add as a percentage of current buy price.
  25. It has also been that Kawasaki have concentrated on WSB rather than being split over MotoGP and WSB. Shame this bike below is not allowed to race because of the supercharger........... King of the Road (track, one has to remap etc a H2 or H2SX to get up to 300 hp) ............ Kawasaki H2R 0-200 mph in 16.83 seconds
