Collected my new car yesterday and went straight to the fuel station, as it was running on fumes. I fuelled up for the 100 mile journey home and set off. After a few miles I was on a dual carriageway, so I set cruise control at just over 60. The next thing I knew, the temperature gauge was heading north of 90 and I watched as it made its way up to 110. I pulled into a lay-by and left the engine running, and the gauge went down to 90 again. At this point, I was wondering if I should phone the garage or not. Anyway, I set off again and the gauge stayed firmly on 90 for the rest of the journey. This morning, I ran the VAG-DPF app to see what the state of the DPF was. It said that the last regen was 143km ago, which is about 90 miles. So, the question (finally) - does the engine coolant temperature increase when a regen is happening? It looks like the increase in temperature reading was about the same time as the regen was happening.

Quick update to this thread, as I got my ‘new’ car today and when I got home, I found that one remote key didn’t work. The working key was very shiny and well worn, whereas the other one looked like it had never been used. I first replaced the battery, but no joy. I then found this thread, which gave me a few pointers, but I also had a look in the driver’s handbook and found the key synchronisation procedure. Remove the cover from the lock cylinder on the driver’s door, press one of the buttons on the key, then unlock the door within one minute. When I opened the door, the alarm went off, so I shut the door again, locked and unlocked with the remote and it all works. 👍

Until about two years ago, VAG UK recommendation was 5 years or xx,000 miles, so a ten year old car could feasibly have had two cam belts. The new recommendation is 140,000 miles with no time limit.

2.0 TDI DSG with 55k, has printouts from Skoda dealer, DSG oil changed last year, but doesn’t appear to have had a cam belt.

As I'm picking up my new (used) car on Saturday, I'm looking into warranty options. The dealer offers 3 months, saying to bring it back to them. They also offer extended warranties, but I've googled their warranty company and they don't get very good reviews. Does anyone have any experience of, or recommendations for after-market warranties? I think you might be onto something there.

I think I'd be tempted to pursue a second-hand engine, if it's going to cost about £3k plus fitting.

I don't really know anything about this engine, but there is a well known problem on 1.8T engines as fitted to Audi TTs and Golfs, I believe. My neighbour talked me into having a look at his Audi TT which had suddenly lost oil pressure. A quick google came up with a problem with the oil pick-up pipe getting blocked. This is what the oil strainer looked like when I removed it. I'm actually shining a light up the inside of the pipe, but there isn't much getting through.

Thanks all. I’ve decided to go for a 2.0Tdi instead. 6-speed DSG and still only £35 VED. I’ve put a deposit on one this afternoon. Probably pick it up a week on Saturday.

The more I think about it, you are probably right. I’ve had a few DSGs over the years, mostly 6-speeds, but my last Superb was a 7-speed and I don’t remember it behaving like that.

Good evening all I'm currently looking to buy a car. I had been looking at Passat estates, but I'm coming round to an Octavia. I went to view one this afternoon, which, on the face of it, ticked a lot of boxes. It's a 2015 estate, 1.6tdi DSG, 48k miles and two owners. I had a test drive in it and it seemed fine, except when pulling away from a standstill, it seemed a bit juddery. I'm obviously a bit concerned that it could be possibly a clutch pack issue. How likely is that and do the symptoms fit? Having driven it for a few miles, I did an OBDeleven scan and the only thing it came up with was the A/C recirculation flap sticking intermittently. The car is for sale at a dealer and the guy said that they had acquired it from 'Motorway'. The service history shows that the timing belt and water pump were replaced mid-2023 and the EGR valve replaced about 6 months ago, at a cost of £1200. I have to wonder why someone would spend all that money on a car and then sell it to Motorway, for presumably not a lot. Oh, the only other thing was there is only one key, so I'm assuming it would be a huge expense to get another made and coded. Apologies for the rambling post and thanks in advance for any advice.

That's a nice insurance bonus. I'm planning to look at one tomorrow, 50k miles. I was wondering about the road tax differences, as I've noticed a few similar cars with different VED rates. It transpires there was a hike in VED rates for cars registered after 01/04/17 Link here: V149

If you have long legs, the Mk2 has much more legroom in the front.

I noticed mine wasn’t working today. I don’t know how long it’s been down, as I’ve hardly been anywhere for the last week.

I've just ripped a couple of albums to FLAC. I'll roadtest them on Tuesday, as I have 5 hours of driving to do. I didn't realise that Windows Media Player offered FLAC as an option, I thought I'd have to convert the files. I also use Audacity a lot and I've just discovered that it also allows you to export as FLAC 👍

If you're storing them in individual folders, you need to make sure that the folder name in 'file properties' is the same as the folder it is in, or they all get jumbled up and difficult to locate. Edit: When I'm ripping CDs to my PC, I save them as 'WMA' files, rather than MP3.

@koborn I hope you have more luck with your update than I did.

After the rigmarole of updating the maps on my last Superb, I wasn't going to bother with my current one. It was only a 2 year lease, so I didn't see the point. However, the fleet department decided to extend the lease by 12 months, possibly due to reduced mileage last year because of CV19, and possibly the effect this had on the business. I finally decided to update the maps after being told that the lease had been further extended for yet another 12 months (ouch). Following all the downloading and unzipping, I used the satnav for the first time, to visit a customer whose location was already stored in the satnav - GPS co-ordinates. I was probably just over a mile from the customer when the satnav announced that I had reached my destination. Hmmm, not good. The next few trips seemed to be OK, but another journey this week had me nearly five miles from the correct destination, again with pre-stored co-ordinates. Another journey yesterday and quite a few of the speed limits displayed were incorrect. I'm sure they were OK before the update. I did back up the SD card prior to the update, so I have just reinstated the previous version. Selecting the destination which was 5 miles out, the distance seems to be OK, so I'm hoping I've cracked it. Anyone else experienced any issues like this?

You don't need to disable ACC in order to set coasting in maxidot. Coasting will just not happen when ACC is engaged. I do have the mode button, so I can't check where to set it in maxidot. I did have a Passat without the mode button and it was available to set in maxidot, I just can't remember where. Also, coasting will not work when the gear selector is in 'sport' mode.

If you don't have the mode button, you should be able to select 'coasting' in the settings menu, as e-Roottoot posted above. Coasting is disabled when ACC is active.

Recently, I've noticed that when I try to find a POI - petrol station, for example - that the satnav shows me a whole host of options for where I've been, but not where I'm heading. Sometimes 50, 60 or 70 miles behind me. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Anyone know what the cause might be? Thanks in advance.
