How do I switch out my swing radio for an RNS510? Which parts do I need for bluetooth, GPS etc. and where can I find them?
I believe in the Fabia you need to upgrade the CAN gateway. I have something in my head about CAN 1.6 that the Fabia uses not being supported by the Columbus (needs 2.0 or something). Otherwise it's a plug and play swap (once you have the correct facia adapter and GPS aerial). For Bluetooth you also need an external Bluetooth module, wiring harness and microphone since the Columbus doesn't have any built in Bluetooth.

1.4 TSI 122 (CAXA) rattle
5W30 is the standard stuff but different grades can also be used. The main thing is as long as it's meets the VW 504 type numbers then it should be fine.

1.4 TSI 122 (CAXA) rattle
That's good to hear! Glad you got it sorted. The 5w30 LL is the correct stuff. It's the Long Life (flexible schedule) oil but perfectly suitable for fixed servicing too. Just has additional additives. 502 is the fixed interval oil. 504 is also suitable for fixed. Do you have the car on fixed or variable?

TPMS - Real one or monitor wheel turning speed like in MK2 vRS?
In fairness the system does its job well. Its purpose being to alert you of a potential issue with the pressures rather than an accurate readout of the pressures. I've had it trigger twice. Once on my previous Octavia when I had a screw in the back tyre and once driving though Denmark and the front tyre was down a few PSI for some reason. As above. The sensors can be expensive and cause additional expenses with tyre installation etc.

E10 fuels
Yeah back to E5. And actually so far it's doing better on fuel than usual. So the price difference just isn't enough to balance out the higher fuel consumption and potential harm caused.

Upright storage of winter wheels?
Here in Germany the Wheel Tree (Felgenbaum) direct translation is the most popular way to store ones wheels:

Saab to Superb
Glad to hear it. I'm sure you'll be very happy with it. Even going from my 2008 9-3 to the 2012 Octavia it feels like a completely different leave to the Saab. The old Saabs were solid and comfortable. Unfortunately the later ones fell victim to GMs pressure for cost cutting on the fit and finish just wasn't good enough. Squeaks, rattles and poorly fitting trim. The Octavia is just a nice place to be. Nothing too fancy but solid and quiet.

No. Maxidot refers to the upgraded dashboard where you can change settings etc.

MFSW and Maxidot
Hi guys. Thread revival time. I recently acquired a 2012 FL Octavia. I want to fit a MFSW. I've done a VCDS scan I the steering controller is: 5K0 953 507 AE This part isn't listed on the Rosstech wiki. But if I go into the long coding the option to enable the multi function steering wheel is there. Does this mean the steering controller is ok and doesn't need swapping? So I just need the wheel and new wiring harness?

E10 fuels
I've been using E10 since I bought my car in June last year. It's sold at all petrol stations here in Germany and is around 5 or 6 cents per litre cheaper. I didn't notice a significant change in fuel economy under normal driving conditions. But when you're driving a little harder or faster it definitely uses more. I think just because of the slightly lower energy content. But bare in mind it's up to 10% ethanol and in reality it's been shown to have much less. I've stopped using it now though due to concerns over damage. A university in Germany has done a long term study on it and they've so far found that the higher ethanol content damages the active charcoal filter. I'm concerned that it may damage other components. The minimal savings just doesn't warrant it so gone back to normal E5.

where is the aux input port in the car?
The aux port came as part of the "jumbo box" (the armrest with the storage inside) and was under the armrest. So you don't have an aux socket. Bluetooth also wasn't standard. It requires an additional Bluetooth module.

Android radio
I also noticed this evening that it still also shows up in the Maxidot too which is a nice surprise.

Android radio
Just took the plunge and fitted an Android stereo. It's a Junsun V1 (I think lol). 10" screen. Was plug and play and supports all CAN bus features (door indicators, climate, turning on and off and other vehicle information). Looks great. And sounds great too. Got my phone connected up. I'm using a microphone in the overhead interior light like the OEM but with a standard microphone jack (FISCON 36338-2). Then got a reversing camera from China on the way. It can with one but it's ugly. And also the stereo shows up the dynamic steering lines when in reverse (they turn with the wheel just like the OEM system) so needed a camera without the inbuilt static lines. Also got a couple of USB Adapters that slot into the buttons by the traction control buttons etc.

1.4 TSI 122 (CAXA) rattle
I'll cross my fingers that it helps. I'd certainly let the garage that fitted it know. If nothing else but to bring their attention to it so they don't do it again.

1.4 TSI 122 (CAXA) rattle
Just been out to check mine now as the garage we bought it from did an oil and filter change before we bought it. It's a 2012 CAXA and they've fitted a Mann W712/94 filter. And under the description of it states that it has 2 non-return valves! Why 2?! Lol Anyway it seems it's the right filter and it makes no funny noises at startup.

1.4 TSI 122 (CAXA) rattle
I think that's the wrong filter. I've looked on a parts site and for the newer OE number the Bosch part number F 026 407 183 shows up but not with 181 on the end. If I put the old number in then both 181 and 183 show up. There's no mention of the valve for the 181 but under 183 it mentions it's fitted with the valve.

AGM battery installation
I certainly would. They should known the product they are selling. Even just a disclamer underneath that "This battery may require programming/coding" or something. The worst they say is no and you've tried. But also the place that fitted it should know too.

Buying a BXE engine Skoda
I too always heard mixed stories of the BXE. From what I could gather most of the BXE failures were a small batch that were mainly fitted to the Golf. I've heard of very few failures on the Octavia. I too owned a BXE for a few years and did around 40k trouble free miles.

I have dropped the rubber cover for a sidelight into the engine bay...
Doh! Could have been worse. I once checked the oil and topped it up before heading off to Germany from York. Drove about 700 miles including doing 100mph+ on the Autobahn. I had thought the engine sounded slightly louder than usual but thought nothing of it as it was running fine and the MPG was ok too. Decided to check the oil before heading home which is when I saw that the engine was covered in oil! I'd forgotten to put the cap back on but it was nowhere to be seen. I'd likely put in on top of the engine and it had fallen off. Bought a new one locally. Found it several months later when doing the DSG oil change. Sat on top of the underside engine cover! Lol

1.4 TSI 122 (CAXA) rattle
Which oil filter have they fitted? There have been cases where the incorrect oil filter is fitted. The correct filter has a non-return valve inside that prevents the oil from flowing back into the sumo when parked up. Without this valve the oil system effectively empties itself and it takes a few seconds to build pressure in the system. Since the tensioner of the chain is tensioned with oil pressure then the chain can go slack until the pressure builds.

AGM battery installation
I honestly would be tempted to go back to the garage that fitted the battery armed with this knowledge and see if they can provide anything towards the costs. The battery will likely have at least a 2 year warranty I would have thought. Some even have up to a 5 year warranty. If they're selling and fitting AGM batteries they should know that the car needs coding accordingly. This isn't just specific to VAG cars but all cars with start stop. The car needs to be told the new battery is installed and what capacity etc it has.

Crunching when passing second gear
I experienced exactly the same on a previous car. Had a Seat Cordoba 1.9 TDI with the same issue. I did a gear oil change using some aftermarket oil. It was a marginal improvement and the old oil was horrible and black. But it still crunched. Bought the genuine VAG oil and it was smooth as butter! The crunch was gone!

Kia Ora From New Zealand. Glad To be Here.
Welcome! I so wish I could be back in New Zealand. We were there 3 years ago. Absolutely stunning country. And the experience of drinking the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc at the source just makes it taste even nicer 😁👍 We hired a car there and you have some lovely roads. Just a shame it wasn't anything exciting to drive. Toyota Auris 1.8 VVTi and CVT gearbox. Was a nice drive done get me wrong. And I was surprised by the economy.
