  1. From the link varooom posted: Vehicles presented with converted halogen headlamp units first used on or after 1 April 1986 will continue to be failed. Before I bought the Fabia I had looked at a Focus and its previous MOT was a fail because LED bulbs had been fitted to the headlights.
  2. HID and LED conversions for Class 3,4,5 and 7 vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986 are illegal and will fail an MOT. Class 1 and 2 motorcycles must not be failed for the defect ‘Light source and lamp not compatible’. The motorcycle inspection manual will be updated shortly, and the ability to select the defect within the MOT testing service will be removed.
  3. As with most people my age I suffer from reduced night vision. Not enough to make driving dangerous but enough to make night driving uncomfortable. Anything that improves my visibility at night is good. I try to avoid driving after dark but that is not always feasible. My 2006 Jazz had better headlights than my 2009 Fabia both of which are far superior to the old sealed beam headlights (and even earlier) that I have driven behind in the past.
  4. Thank you. I take it it just uses a single filament H7?
  5. This is the light unit fitted to my car. Is this just a standard H4 assembly?
  6. Whatever the dealer fitted should see me out. I only do 3K a year now so if I get 20K I will be laughing.
  7. I would be inclined to suspect something on the new glass that has transferred to the blades. Cleaning both with a good cleaner may well help. I would use Autoglym Glass Cleaner on the screen and a good liquid cleaner or even methylated spirit in the rubber. I too use Bosch blades and have never had any bother with them.
  8. How do I know what headlamp bulbs I require other than stripping out the old bulbs to check? According to the VIN decoder, I have: 8JK Ellipsoidal headlamps for driving on the left 8K0 Without special headlight control The manual says Reflector H4 or Module H7 but what do I have? The Haynes manual says Halogen H4LL and Halogen projector H7LL. My headlamps look like Projector lamps in that they are small and about 75mm in diameter. powerbulbs gives me the choice of Single headlight or Bi-focus (H4 or H7). I am just getting more or more confused. Then I read about lamps with a single H7 but shuttered. Beginning to think I will just have to suffer the mediocre lights I have now.
  9. I have been looking at a pair of these. https://www.powerbulbs.com/product/piaa-xtreme-white-plus-h4
  10. I was out last night, after dark, for the first time since getting the car and I must say I found the headlights mediocre at best. There was nothing wrong with the beam pattern they were just not very bright (the height control was set correctly for the load in the vehicle). I also tried the fog lights and you almost have to stand up to notice any difference. They add a bit of light to about 4 ft in front of the car. Thankfully I seldom drive after dark.
  11. I have no intention of retro fitting a 3rd party system. If I do repair them I will get an auto electrician to do the job. I am not able to do it myself, not through lack of ability but I am 74 years old and disabled. Getting down on the ground is near impossible, and getting back up is. As I said at the beginning, I may not bother repairing them. Most of my parking is supermarket car parks or my drive. Seldom need to parallel park.
  12. They are factory fitted with the Dance radio. I will have a listen.
  13. Yes I appreciate that. I have used them before for a coil pack for my Jazz. I only used them as an example of price for KeithCheetham. Why I said UK is the address I looked up was Autodoc.co.uk but I know everything comes from Germany. The coil packs took 10 days. If I decide to repair it I will stick it into Car Tech Solutions in Loanhead.
  14. Autodoc uk are advertising 4 Hella sensors for £38.
  15. Now that I have been using the car, albeit not a great deal, I realise the Parking Aid is defective. After researching the forum I understand that the second long tone, after selecting reverse for the first time, means the system is defective. Probably one or more defective sensors. I may get round to getting something done about it but as I have only done 30 miles since buying the car before Christmas I am reluctant to splash out in case the car turns out to be a polished turd. I have never had rear parking sensors (well I have, but I always referred to them as the bumpers) so I won't miss them.
  16. If the coolant temperature only gets up to 68C then the air coming into the car is never going to get hot, especially if the aircon is fighting against it. Even with no thermostat in place I would expect the coolant to get up to temperature eventually, unless it is exceptionally cold and the radiator fan is running constantly.
  17. Do you know what total mileage the car had done? Mine has just under 70K on the clock.
  18. My son-in-law has just come back to me with a price of £350 to do the job, which is closer to what I had in mind. I have suggested we do an inspection before starting any work.
  19. The VIN decoder says: Engine Code BXW I texted my son-in-law this evening and he says he will price the parts so obviously he is willing to do it. I suggested we delay until the better weather then do an inspection. Going by "it's EXTREMELY unlikely to give any trouble." I think that is probably the best bet. Who knows, it may have been changed last summer! Haynes manual says: Skoda specify timing belt inspection after the first 55 000 miles and then every 20 000 miles, but does not have a renewal interval time. However, if the car is used mainly for short journeys, we recommend that the timing belt be renewed at 55 000 miles when the first Inspection takes place. It is only 43,000 miles since it was last changed by a main dealer and it will be four years before I put another 12,000 miles on it.
  20. It was done 43,000 miles and ten years ago by a main dealer. Unfortunately my son-in-law now lives 45 miles away and isn't keeping too well but I don't doubt he could do it, he may have already done it on one or other of the SEATs he has owned.
  21. Received a quote today for Cambelts and water pump belt kit, fitted. £583. Looks like I will have to risk going without replacing them.
  22. That is definitely not up to operating temperature. Should be around 90°C.
  23. I just parted with a Honda Jazz. To change a front light bulb you have to jack the car up, remove the front wheel then remove the wheel arch liner! Needless to say, you replace both headlight and sidelight bulb while you are in there.
  24. "Puis-je profiter de cette occasion pour dire un grand merci à tous pour leur aide. J'ai le nouveau capteur de LLL, je l'ai installé et tout est clair sur l'écran, pas de voyants sur le tableau de bord. J'ai encore besoin de coder le nouvel injecteur, donc j'envisage d'acheter le VCDS car j'ai l'intention de garder la voiture jusqu'à ce qu'elle meure. Encore merci"
