  1. exactly . With a 300+ range (and all other considerations) then a BEV could be a viable option for me as I could go (and come back) where I needed 99% of the time and charge only at home as I am in a fortunate position. The only time I would need on route charging is holidays to Scotland or trips down to see other family further afield (Somerset through Cornwall) and even then we would typically be stopping somewhere on the way anyways or and/or overnight
  2. Oh I'm not currently but then that was the sort of point of my original post. Once there's an EV on the market that meets my requirements I may consider it but until then I'm simply a nerd interested in the technology
  3. Ok so lets have more of a think about my range requirements  and other criteria (and yes I am fortunate enough to be able to charge at home if I did ever make the switch). I originally stated "400 miles" The 2 longest one way journeys I do regularly are either a) to my parents in Doddington (Shropshire) which is 110 mile one way via the M6|M56|A49 b) down to my GFs daughters in Nottingham which is around 98 miles one way via M6|A500|A50|M1|A52 Both of which are comfortably done without needing a stop. Now taking the MG5 above as an example that that has a theoretical max range of 214 miles however as we all now most vehicle ICE/EV rarely attain their stated ranges. That being the case I don't think it's unreasonable to set a range expectation of say 300 miles minimum (ok previously I said 400 but I am prepared to come down a little) to cover a round trip to either of those destinations given that neither destination has the ability to even allow use of a Granny charger to partially top up. Yes there are EV charging stations on route but I have no other need to break the journey. My parents live on in a Park Home and the parking is the red x Meanwhile my GFs daughter there's a big patch of grassed area between her house and the road
  4. I had completely overlooked the fact that MG have a car which meets most of my (personal) requirements for an (pre used) EV and is starting to fall into the sub £10k market, The biggest thing missing (for me personally) is the maximum potential range (and yes I know , for most journies I do it would be fine especially if I used home charging but that's not the point) The MG5 Estate
  5. Which the UK is no longer formally or legally a part of ;o) Are there any examples yet of post brexit legislation which hasn't simply followed the EU example?
  6. Well given MG are part of SAIC and given that based on this article they look to be one of the manufacturer's who didn't bung the EU Kommisars a big enough backhander so look to be getting stung with 38.1% additional import duties................
  7. a Skoda Superb Mk4 hatchback is apparently 0.24 https://www.skoda.co.uk/news/details/the-fourth-generation-of-the-skoda-superb-will-once-again-offer-a-hatchback Mind you (and I may be wrong here) but especially with EV economy doesn't rolling resistance have a greater impact on range compared to ICE ?
  8. Surely aero efficiency is equally important to ICE as EVs? Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realise that something shaped like a brick will suffer more than a fish shaped car especially at motorway speeds. It’s all a compromise
  9. Hey Siri, call my girlfriend
  10. errrrm I think you missed the point that they were doing a "how far can we go " type of test and were merely commenting on the state of the facilities available at the time of their stop, they didn't actually intend on using them. Yes of course there are apps that can tell you in advance but again that's you having to adapt to the car. How many times when driving a traditional ICE car did you ever need to check in advance if the petrol stations on route were working ? Oh and the most ridiculous one was the services where (I believe it was when they visited previously) the chargers were out of action with a sign saying the power supply to the site wasn't sufficient. What a load of c*ck. And this is with a relatively low number of EVs in use, imagine what it will be like if/when they are pretty much the only vehicles available)
  11. that's as maybe but what exactly are you saying was incorrect about my original post ?
  12. from the Register article I linked to previously Additionally, the EC mentions Tesla will also be subject to the tariffs since it produces some of its EVs in China. However, the announcement notes that the Musk-run car brand requested an individually applied tariff like BYD and Geely, presumably to get access to lower tariffs. Other brands are also allowed to request their own unique tariffs after the investigation has concluded.
  13. what's incorrect ? The tongue in cheek comment (as indicated by the emoticon) about "backhanders" ? That's the whole point of a tongue in cheek comment!!!
  14. The actual tariffs being imposed appear to depend on how much of a "backhander" the manufacturer has bunged the EU ;o) Three brands in particular were hit with tariff bumps: BYD at 17.4 percent, Geely at 20 percent flat, and SAIC with a hefty 38.1 percent. A general tariff increase against other brands will be levied depending on whether they have cooperated with the EU's investigation: 21 percent for those that did, and 38.1 percent for those that didn't. These numbers are much lower than the 100 percent tariff that the US put into place, with the maximum being 48.1 percent for non-cooperative firms. The numbers for BYD and Geely suggest that they were cooperative with the EU, while SAIC wasn't. https://www.theregister.com/2024/06/12/eu_chinese_ev_tariffs/
  15. Again I guess it (almost?) highlights the difference between technology being driven by market forces and technology being driven by Government Intervention as these REX setups don't exactly meet the mandated targets set of Zero Emissions at the tailpipe so why spend money on developing them further?
  16. I just think its a shame REX HEVs such as the Vauxhall Ampera (which I did seriously consider buying earlier this year) didn't really go anywhere
  17. Whereas with my Superb (or any other ICE) I don’t need to think about the state of charge. Even if I’m down to half a tank I can still do best part of a 300 mile round trip without thinking about it. And if I do need more fuel it takes minutes. Many months I may fill up once and that does me for the month with plenty of spare range available. As I think I said previously I want a vehicle that suits me and not me have to adapt greatly to the vehicle. With the current state of EVs I would have to adapt, maybe that will change at some point in the future but until then (for me at least) fossil fuels rule although I am a bit of a nerd and I love the technology that’s coming out.
  18. that's where the residuals come into play
  19. mmm given most people purchase on some form of finance or PCP etc then its the residuals on sales which are more of a factor than up front costs as not many buyers pay in full up front ;o)
  20. I have a set of criteria and Range is one of them. If the potential range isn't possible then for me the vehicle isn't suitable. I don't see anything there that meets my personal range requirements. An EV needs to meet my requirments and not me suit the EV Yes most of the time I don't need the full range. My superb can get 600 miles on a tank and I typically refuel at 300 miles. I like having the range there in case it's needed And yes, am aware the used market isn't there yet for any number of reasons. When it is I may consider the move.
  21. when there are EVs on the (used) market that can do the equivalent of 40mpg+ (and a range of at least 400 miles) , are less than 5 years old, with up to 50k miles , under £10k (or inflation adjusted equivalent) and in an estate body shape then maybe I would consider one Currently, for example, Autotrader has 50 ICE vehicles meeting the above criteria. Is this a pipe dream? https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-search?body-type=Estate&fuel-consumption=OVER_40&maximum-mileage=50000&postcode=bl35rd&price-to=10000&sort=relevance&year-from=2019 (no that's not my postcode)
  22. some people might say the best option (but not the cheapest) is Multimac https://www.multimac.com/
  23. not a problem as all cars will also be mandated with forward facing radar to automatically apply the brakes...................................
