Retrofit Reverse Camera : PNP no coding required?
Have any of you fine people used this kit from Alibaba? Is it really PNP with no coding?? Might be tempted at that price (I will be fitting a nextbase front & rear dashcam at same time that I removed from my old Ceed) ally

Random Thought Time: Why no 7 seater option??
I reckon in the III there would have been enough room to bring the rear seats forward a bit and add a 3rd occasional row a la the old Citroen CX & DS Familiale's

Buying an Ex Taxi: is it fraught with dangers
Cheers, Sadly this beauty was out of budget (ok I could have financed but that was never the plan) https://www.audisaab.co.uk/used-cars/skoda-superb-1-4-tsi-iv-13kwh-se-technology-dsg-euro-6-ss-5dr-wirral-202401265938774

Buying an Ex Taxi: is it fraught with dangers
and completely irrelevant to the car itself. Orange dot is the lodge house Pink Dot is the main house (WFH lol) Blue Dot is the estate cottages where the pics are taken Google maps

Buying an Ex Taxi: is it fraught with dangers
well decision has been made and a deposit left on this. Decided to get what I was actually looking for (petrol/auto) although I did give serious consideration to diesels etc and yes I know , wrong engine wrong gearbox but.......... She will be getting a completely fresh MOT with any work (if needed) doing done plus a another service (which will be registered with skoda). 1 owner from new with every service done on time and came to Sam direct from Skoda. Speaking of which probably the nicest place I've ever been to see a car. This is just the lodge at the entrance!!! Anyways after being let in through the electric gate pulled up in my GFS Ioniq, Sam introduced himself, gave a brief spiel about his operating model and then popped a trade plate in the car, gave me the keys and a popper for the gate and said to go for a test drive. I have to say that 1.4 feels quite pokey (side note: that confused my GF as she thought I was referring to interior space rather than engine performance!!) Anyways nice clean vcheck report other than a small quirk on the mileage in 2022 which looks to be a keying error

Mk3 xenon upgrade
*not* legal advice ;o) Source : https://www.driving.co.uk/car-clinic/car-clinic-areenon-headlight-conversions-legal/ So bottom line you can't simply drop in a HID conversion into a housing /reflector designed for halogen. Makes sense High-intensity discharge (HID) headlights, better known as xenon lights, offer more pure white light on the road than standard halogen bulbs while drawing less power. However, installing xenon bulbs as an aftermarket upgrade, as opposed to having them fitted on the production line as standard, is not legal in the eyes of the transport department. It says you must change the whole headlamp unit, because the lens and reflector for a halogen bulb will give the wrong beam pattern if used with an HID bulb. However it would seem likely that you can drop in a complete replacement unit, Sounds like the biggest headache my abe ensuring the dipped beams remain on with the high beams (but that happens with the halogen equipped Superbs anyway doesn't it??) Washer jets would I think be a relatively simple farkle, a Y splitter from the existing windscreen feed and a couple of jet nozzles fitted into the bumpers. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, for its part, publishes a raft of safety regulations that all gas-discharge headlights must adhere to. For instance, they must be fitted with a washing system (unless the output is less than 2,000 lumens) and an automatic self-levelling system (unless it can be proved that the dipped beam is aimed correctly, as tested in the MoT). They must also be set up so that the dipped beam stays on when the main beam is activated.

the truth about electric cars
which is why trains use diesel-electric rather than driving the traction wheels directly from the diesel engine
-
the truth about electric cars
Don't most EVs have a 12V subsystem that is charged by the traction battery to power lights , radio etc etc rather then drawing directly from a High Voltage system ? WOnder what (if any) efficiency losses there are involved there ;o)

Buying an Ex Taxi: is it fraught with dangers
Its the roadtax &more than anything is the biggest turn off, I only do around4-5k miles PA so although the fuel consumption is "low" it's not the biggest deal breaker. Even the insurance isnt too bad, actually its lower than the 1.5's and even than my Ceed would be on a like for like comparison (age & value comes into that I presume)

the truth about electric cars
yup and therein lies the issue. Regarding the GFs Ioniq HEV I think this is the first time she's got to the end of her finance on a vehicle and not even thought about looking for another one. She's even been getting the dealer contacting her wanting to take it back in, might be because it's worth more now than when she bought it 3 years ago!

the truth about electric cars
one car I was considering as a replacement for my Ceed (until I started looking at Superbs) was an Ampera/Volt with a REX powertrain. A car that was ahead of it's time but suffers now from spares availability(in the UK) and didn't sell here in great volumes.

Buying an Ex Taxi: is it fraught with dangers
Looks like its only been driven too & from the test centre for the last couple of years lol (also based on the mileage on the AT Ad & x reffing to MOT mileage I suspect they've been sat on it for some tiime)

Buying an Ex Taxi: is it fraught with dangers
I mean this is nice. It has the 6 speed rather than 7 speed DSG (which If I've read correctly is the wet clutch model) and only 2 owners from new with Full Skoda Service History. MOT history is also good with the vast majority of advisories being consumable tyre/brake related Just the small matter of 240k miles, sky high road tax and thirst for fuel to consider lol

Buying an Ex Taxi: is it fraught with dangers
I have also seen a couple of 3.6's out there [in budget] but the road tax is "oof" as is the fuel consumption lol

Buying an Ex Taxi: is it fraught with dangers
that ones gone down my list anyways lol At the moment I'm watching : a MY11 S2 1.8 TSI Elegance DSG with 120k miles, asking price £6k a MY18 S3 1.4 TSI ACT SE DSG with 125k miles, asking price £8k Both are estates with the MY11 having leather, sunroof, park assist & electric tailgate but only standard Cruise & no Apple Carplay whereas the MY18 has ACC & Apple Carplay but fabric and no sunroof, park assist or electric tailgate. Also on the list (but would mean no drive sharing) is a Hatch MY19 1.5 TSI ACT SE Technology Manual with 93k miles, asking price 9.25k
