  1. I've just obtained some old Earls Court Motor Show guides from 1954 to 1959, these are b & w and about the size of a large magazine with 4 cars on each page along with their tech specs and prices.

The only Skoda to feature from 1954 to 1958 is the 1100 which is described as:

"Smart new baby from behind the Iron Curtain.." and apparently "if your windscreen is smashed far from a spare parts depot just push out the rear window & fix it in the front - they're exactly the same size and shape" This seems like a great idea and maybe modern Skodas should use it.....?

This splendid vehicle would have cost you £841....falling to £788 by 1958

The last year that I have; 1959 includes the Skoda Felicia with an 1100cc engine tuned to give 53bhp & yours for £744.

    As a comparison, a Morris 1000 Traveller was £669.

Oh and if you have got access to a time machine a Merc 300 SL Gullwing was listed at £4,651 in 1956 & a Ferrari 250 GT £5951 in 1959.....

  2. Looks really nice Paul.

I was tempted myself recently but was put off by the "no where to put your big left foot issue", maybe I had read too much but even found it a problem sat in one in the showroom.

Any thoughts as you have actually driven one......?

  3. Interesting - what faults/issues?

Must say I don;t know what's wrong with people moaning at the ride - it has 40 profile 17's, it's not going to be like driving on clouds...

    What did you buy instead?

The initial fault according to Skoda Assistance was....."Brake light switch implausible signal". this rendered the car undriveable.

I subsequently had problems with the central locking which meant I could not unlock/lock the car . Pressing the fob did nothing as if the whole system was dead. The car had been with me for 5 weeks, in that time it was with the dealer for 7 1/2 days..

Having owned 3 Octavia vRS I love Skoda and will be the last person to critise the marque simply because I have moved on.

Ride quality is an individual thing I know but for me it was an issue on the vRS estate.

    I currently drive a Mazda.

  4. That was my car.......

No great mystery, it was available to order (in Aug 2011) as a "new" colour.

Strangely,it only took 11 weeks to arrive in the middle of all the huge waiting time tales.

Sadly, I could not get on with the hard ride (worse than the hatch in my experience) or the DSG so it was time to move on.

I also had a few issues early on with the car (it was back with the dealer for a week after 1 1/2 days) so doubtless that affected my enjoyment.

  5. Oh, I forgot! My hobby horse is that ALL cars ought to have at least a space saver if not a full size spare wheel. Usually when you get a puncture at speed, by the time you stop the sidewall is destroyed and no amount of tyre foam will get you home!

Another suggestion - try changing a wheel at home to ensure that all the 'kit' (including locking wheel nut key) that came with the car, works.

Good point, my new car has only a can of foam/kit (no spare even as an option) & I am now paranoid that every journey will result in a puncture.....!

  6. Could anybody give me a realistic value of my car. VRS 2.0ltr with DSG, 8k miles. August 2011 in Sprint Blue. Extras include full leather, Xenons, park sensors, sun roof and sat nav. It was 22k new, with VAT paid. It has had a Shark remap and fitted with full Milltek exhaust. Getting silly low quotes from dealers!! Thanks a lot.

    I'm guessing about....£12k........?......

  7. This is why I've long since believed that the whole Full Main Dealer Service History thing was nothing more than a bloody great conspiracy. In general you pay approx £80 per hour for a 16 yr old to change your oil etc as quick as his boss can possibly whip him...inevitably with little or no quality to the whole thing. Of course they need to charge you a fortune in order to fund the legion of almost pretty girls that seem to loiter around in the showroom doing sod-all but offering you terrible coffee...oh and of course the expanse of pointless glass and steel work must take a bit of paying back, and leak heat like a garden shed!

It's always been the small owner run independent mechanic for me...and if he is a VAT registered mechanic your warranty remains valid regardless of what the dealer tries to tell you.

...and i've enough mates in the trade to know what goes on...and it would make you teeth curl!

Excellent post and good points....Thanks !

  8. Pretty much agree with others comments however my major negative point is re the ride quality which for me, is very firm. The hatch (which I have driven extensively) has a different feel without a shadow of a doubt.

Interior is nice, seats are good but build quality is only fair, I was very dissapointed moving from an Octavia and perhaps naively expected a smaller version....
