the 2.0 TFSI engine does also have a timing chain, albeit only a dinky one, at the flywheel end of the head. The timing belt just drives the exhaust camshaft from the front of the engine, and the inlet cam is driven from the opposite end via the chain and an adjusting unit for varying the inlet cam timing

i would check your cam folllower for your HPFP as when they start to wear that can also enhance the diesel type noise. The TFSI is quite noisy due to the nature of the high pressure fuel injectors but they are shouldn't sound like a diesel

i would say either boost leak or leaking diaphram on the diverter valve
