  1. Timing chains and their tensioners are not without their failures on vag petrol engines ( plenty of threads on here ) plus chains stretch and are noisier which is why most manufactures went over to belts. Having it changed every 5 years is just an expense for have to allow for in the overall cost of ownership my 09 had its second one last year.
  2. I took it to mean looked at or seen, ie I just clocked a policeman down there, rather than adjusted the mileage.
  3. Hi agree with above, hopefully it is just the battery I parked a car up once jumped in it an hour later and click click click it wouldnt start so it can just be instant with batteries.
  4. In that case the brake system would need bleeding surely ? if the system has been opened up and fluid has leaked out you can't just fill the master cylinder and declare it fixed.
  5. I would be more interested in finding out where the brake fluid had gone is there a leak somewhere where a pipe has been damaged for instance ?
  6. I got a local auto locksmith to do one for me he came out cut the key coded it for around £60, this was a few years ago and was not a remote key just a normal put in the door one.
  7. Do you have an insurance black box fitted ? I ask as a nephew had a fairly minor slow coming together with a ditch / tree and wrote off his car he decided not to claim just to buy another car. The insurance were very interested in why he was changing cars and he said they must have looked at the black box telemetry and wondered what happened.
  8. What is the correct oil? Depending on source I get told 5W30, 5W40 or 10W40. I can't seem to find a consistent answer. What is said above you need to make sure it is the correct spec oil vw 507 is what you want, i use quantum long life iii oil which is 5w 30 there is a dealer who sells it for a good price on ebay a lot of the time
  9. Ours is an 2009 tdi it has done 97k miles we got it in 2010 with 12k on it. the aircon on ours stopped working but it was a compressor bolt that had loosened I had it regassed at the same time and the gas and lube taken out was almost exactly the same amounts as needed for the refill. We get it serviced every year correct oil is important for pd engines. It had its 2nd cam belt change and water pump in the summer. The only thing that I have changed more often than expected is front brake pads and discs it is on its 3rd set and it is a family car not a race car.
  10. yeah disconnect the battery and leave it off for 30 mins might sort you out.
  11. Yeah but the onboard fuel computers are not that accurate either if you didn't do brim to brim fill ups and do the maths who knows what it was actually doing to a gallon ?
  12. If i returned every car I bought that didn't match the claimed mpg figure I doubt I would be able to own a car. The quoted mpg figures are next to impossible to get in the real world. 56 mpg for a car the size of a superb is pretty good I think.
  13. As said in 1st reply the engine needs to cranking at a minimum speed when warm to inject fuel but not when cold and I believe it is black and white 799 rpm on starter no fuel 800 fuel (my figures not accurate or correct) Check earths and Battery and replace battery if needed is simplest at worst it may need a new starter.
  14. I also use 507 there is a vag dealer here in the uk that often has it for sale on ebay at very competitive prices.
  15. I had mine coded out as well it was randomly going off and not only was it annoying it was distracting.
  16. Wise move at the last service my trusted local garage said my battery was at around 65% of original cca and within two months it did fail to start the car one morning.
  17. Be careful how you lever the lid top off it is thin metal and can deform fairly easily leading to it not sealing correctly when reattached which can lead to diesel leaking on to the area the belts are which can lead to big problems.
  18. Two of our cars have ecp lion batteries fitted one recently but the other 3 years ago with no problems, they give the same 3 year warranty as other brands and are competitively priced.
  19. Clutch life will vary from driver to driver car to car so too many variables too extrapolate from one to another. As above if its working perfectly leave it until it is giving issues.
  20. I would say that bulb is not going to last much longer I would be contacting the retailer to try and arrange a replacement.
  21. You might want to read this. https://www.carlightblog.com/2014/09/26/weak-violet-light-means-your-xenon-lamp-is-about-to-fail/
  22. Hi if a good one is worth 5k and you paid 3k does this not give you a 2k window to fix any issues and still come out even ? if the rest of it is mint as you say would it not be worth doing ? possibly cheaper to transplant in a known good engine if you can find one 2nd hand rather than try to fix this one.
  23. sorry I had missed the part about changing the cam shaft .
