  1. Hi, welcome to Briskoda, The noise is probably the usual screech from the starter when they start to get tired, some people have had success with removing it and cleaning it up, others have not. At the end of the day, if you have the time to try, then that and a few squirts of WD40 is all you have to lose. As to the other bit with the "put it in 5th and gun it" bit, how long did you do it for?, a few seconds or much longer?. It probably has got very hot and may take a few days of much less abuse to settle down, but it really depends on how much abuse it took to be henest
  2. Happy New year to everyone on here, hope you all have a good 2016, with plenty of dry weather to keep on with the brilliant stuff you all produce on here.
  3. These should be most of the OEM part numbers, just pick the bit you need - http://www.partscats.info/skoda/en/?i=cat_vag_models&brand=sk&number=81&set=88&ein=2003&f=252&hauptgr=1234567890&hg=1&grf=010385194&bf=10385&hgug=103&ug=03&parent_id=63057
  4. Welcome to the fold, as said above, if you want to know something just ask, we're all a friendly bunch in here. I do love a clean red vrs
  5. mjh69, the timeline on this seems to be implied at about a year at the moment until we get more accurate info from VW, so with that in mind, who says you have to be first in the queue?. Just tread water for 2-3 months and see what effect it has on fleet cars and the like before jumping in as a man in the street risking his own hard earned money. When a clearer picture surfaces, then you have a decision to make, until then, I would just sit, watch and listen. It would not be the first time this government has threatened a law and then done an absolute U turn due to public pressure - that means votes in their language, so don't read to much in at the moment.
  6. To be honest without checking out your car personally to be sure, I would be looking for either partially siezed track rod ends or balljoints, which can be fairly quickly checked by releasing the track rod ends from the hubs and seeing if any tight spots exist as you move the hub by hand lock to lock on each side. Also you can check the track rod end for tight spots by hand while they are released from the hub as well. It could also be a partially siezed top mount. Just a few thoughts, hope it helps. Phil.
  7. I think that needs clarifying, because at present a vehicle can only fail for something that has been tested within the scope of the DVSA framework for the test, and as at present, there is no test for NOx, then I can't see how they can legally issue a fail, unless they are saying it is a type approval issue. This is simply because an owner could appeal the test to the DVSA under current rules and probably have the fail overturned. Not to mention it would set a retrospective precedent for other emissions problems for other manufacturers to be included that have already been excluded from certain aspects of the testing procedure. If they do it, then it would be the motor trade equivalent of throwing a live grenade into the room with all the nightmare legal issues that would follow - i.e you let the Ford xyz off the test section in 2007 but we as VW have to forcefully submit our vehicles to legal scrutiny now - I can hear it now - discrimination, why just us?, why not the others who transgress?. This is something the UK government wants to go away as quickly and as quietly as possible, and as GoneOffskiroottoot said, neither the VW and definitely not the DVSA systems are up to the job for this.
  8. I am thinking of one of these as well, have been looking at the LG as well. Has anyone replaced a 5.1 system with one of these?, as I would like to try to reduce some of the wiring in my room to replace my ageing 5.1 system. Sorry OP for the hijack, but I think were after the same sort of answers.
  9. Hi all, There seems to be a regular question on here every now and then as to what tyre to fit on a mk1 Octavia Vrs. I have over the last 4 years had Continental Sport Contact 3's and sport contact 5's, each time on all 4 tyres so no mixing and matching, so I can give a genuine opinion based on their performance at all corners of the car. Both the Continentals 3 and 5 offer good dry grip, and good wet weather grip, with a fairly good amount of grip in temps down to about 0 degrees. Whilst they offer grip at that temperature, they are no winter tyre, just fairly good as normal tyres go. The Contact 5's seem to lose their "edge" once the tread depth drops under 3.5 mm, which considering they only come with about 6mm when new means you don't get full performance from the wear of the tyre, they also emit a lot more road noise once wear passes 3.5mm. I have now gone for Goodyear efficientgrip performance tyres in the standard 205/50/17 size, and whilst I have only put about 300 miles on the tyres so far, my initial impressions are very favourable. Wet weather grip seems to feel more sure footed, mainly because the Goodyear's seem to feed back more feel as to what is going on at the wheels allowing you to control the car much more positively. Braking is hard to judge yet as the tyres are new and not fully bedded in yet, but it appears to be at least as good as the Conti's, and I think it will probably get better. The one thing that is so obvious even though the tyres are not fully bedded yet is how much less roadnoise is in the car. I would say it is about 10% less than the Conti's when new, and is really noticeable over regular roads that I drive on compared to the Conti's. Once the tyres are bedded down, I will try to give more info on dry and wet braking to make it a fairer comparison, but my initial impression is that I did not waste my money here and that there is the start of a big smile on my face. One last thing, to keep the opinion fair, tha car always has a 4 wheel alignment at the same time as the new tyres are fitted, so any misalignment is ruled out to cause any skewing of the opinion. I hope this of some interest to some of you, and I will update in about 4 weeks to complete the comparison. Have a good Christmas, Phil.
  10. Having had a company Astra in a Main Vauxhall dealers for a warranty repair that resulted in the technician leaving a pair of mini mole grips still locked behind the dash as I used the lighter socket, I can possibly agree with the bodged repair bit, but as to who did it, on my personal experience, I think they need to look a lot nearer to home. Denial is a sad thing to watch while it happens.
  11. I feel your pain mate, I am a Santander customer as well, but trust me, all banks are cr@p lately. I suppose they meant well, they did stop a chap in Hong Kong using my card at 3 in the afternoon while I was in Bluewater making my own overdraft with the wife. , but to carry it on after they found there procedure threw up a false positive is a real poor act to use in their defence.
  12. That socket makes life so easy, wouldn't be without mine.
  13. All arrived today in top order, many thanks Coops.
  14. Nice cars, just check your rear spring seats on the body out well. Hope all goes well with this one.
  15. The metal ones I have from Aldi look like they could withstand a nuclear device going off, very good value for money IMO.
  16. It's what is on my rear doors as OEM from the factory, only the fronts are foam on mine.
  17. +1 means he agrees with what was said as well, sort of like "i go along with all of that".
  18. No rush mate, whenever you get the time is fine by me.
  19. B&Q heavy duty polythene sheeting and carefully cut to shape and size, then secure with quality Gaffer tape, unless you want to go megabucks OEM route.
  20. Lamp seal leaking?, can you see fresh water running if someone operates rear washer while you look?.
  21. What year is your car?. For info on the code, http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/17704/P1296/004758 to be honest, if they are doing the belt, you would be wise to do the water pump and thermostat at the same time, and only disturb the cooling system once. The gremlins sound like the usual door control unit stuff, see here for more info - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/336309-how-to-check-and-protect-your-door-multiplugs/ Hope it helps, Phil
