  1. Huw - I have 26k on my 140 DSG and I'm frequently getting over 50mpg for mixed driving. Sitting about 80mph coming home from Dublin for about 70 miles and around 60 for the last 30 miles I was averaging 47mph before subtracting the average 10% optimism. Works for me.
  2. Having swopped my C Class Estate for a Superb Combi Elegance, there is very little difference in quality and I think the Suberb shades it. I had to have a seat replaced in the Merc as the fake leather split (one year in) and my alloys were refurbed 3 times in three years before Merc relented and gave me a new set, happily just before I sold the car. It was my second Merc Estate. Build quality went down rather than up between cars. The whopping difference is in the low running cost of the Superb over the Merc. Merc servicing is just crazy money. The other difference was in the standard spec in the Elegance. It would have cost me thousands more to get that in a Merc. And finally...after the 2010 winter when even with sand and breeze blocks in the boot of the Merc it was a white knuckle ride to stay on the road. In last year's snow in the Superb 4 x 4 I didn't have a moment's worry. Its not all build quality....
  3. I have to agree I moved to my Superb from a C Class. It was a nice car but not so nice as to warrant the premium price or whopper servicing costs. Also I don't think Mercs are nearly as well built as they used to be. I was offered a great deal on another C Class when it came time to change but I felt the Superb was an all round better car and still do. However I would be tempted by the new Octavia Combi 4x4. A o
  4. Also not a fan of the new steering wheel look, but do like the neater DSG shiftstick
  5. A friend says you only get to know your car when you wash it and I have been impressed with the curves of the current model. The changes are reasonable enough, but I'm not fully won over. A bit too angular for me and I don't like the sharp lines around the numberplate which started with the Rapid. Also I don't see it as a simple facelift, but more of a mid term 'new model' in the front and back design. I'm worried that it is sufficiently different to affect the residuals of my current model. I really like my car and the fact that it was different from the other models in the range, especially the Octavia. Now we have the same exterior features in three sizes Rapid, Octavia and Superb. I suspect there will be a loyal fan base for the styling of the 2010 model, especially the combo. If I were changing now I'd think very carefully about a new Octavia 4x4 over a new Superb. Cheaper, not that much less room and now looking pretty much the same as a Superb. And if I were thinking of an Octavia, there are other estates at that size which deserve a second look.
  6. If this is the facelift I'm pleased I have a 2011 model. The facelift is so ugly it will actually add value to my model. : )
  7. Most useful and accurate. It detected a slow puncture and after hitting a pothole indicated that I had blown a tyre wall. I've become a bit anal now about tyre pressures and the indicator I find to be most accurate. If it comes on I don't ignore it.
  8. Used mine once. Normally carry a full size in the boot. I was really glad of it the once I did use it and really impressed with the quality. Certainly not a novelty extra. Now lovingly restored to its holder. Good to know its there when you need it. Now to the confession...not long after I got the Superb I parked up in the rain without a coat and ...well...forgot about the little brolly. Five mins later and well soaked I suddenly remembered the brolly. I had to smile. Clever Superb...foolish me!
  9. I changed my Conti 2s for Conti 5s all round after 18,000. I'm well pleased with them. Much quieter and my mpg has increased. I got a good tyre pressure gauge and keep pressures as recommended and tracking checked and slightly adjusted at wheel change. I'll be interested to see what I get from the Conti 5s . The noise sweet spot is around 55mph, but really not intrusive at 70-80. BTW have had my combi 4x4 just over a year and it just keeps getting better.
  10. The old glove box rattle problem which I had in mine has, since return from service, disappeared. Next time i'm in the dealer's I'll ask if they tweaked anything to make it go away. Right now I'm enjoying the silence, unless I have a front seat passenger when the seatbelt connector rattles something awful.
  11. Did better than that...gave them a written testimonial of their services and my experience as a happy Skoda owner, which I have invited them to use on their website. Very happy with Mervyn Stewart, from sales to service. A
  12. Happy New Year all, When I got my Superb Eleg 4x4 Estate on 22 Dec 2011, (thank you Santa) i also purchased the 2 yr service pack for £249 (inc £50 voucher for accessories). This is a fixed service package - 20,000 or two years whichever is earliest. I didn't read the small print tho. My Superb was set to variable servicing and 16,700 on the clock I thought I would book a first service just within the year, even tho the variable servicing showed another 2000 or so miles or another 240 days. When I took the car in and queried the service pack with my dealer against what the car was telling me they were very good. Agreed to do the 20,000 mile service as a first service and reset the car for fixed servicing for the second service (at 26,000). At that point they will reset the car to variable servicing. Happy enough with that. One year on with a new set of front tyres (Conti sport contact 5) I'm really happy with the car. The new tyres are quieter and the service seems to have sorted that really annoying rattle from the passenger side glove compartment a lot of people have commented on. As part of the deal when I bough the car I also get free Sat Nav software upgrades from the dealer. As a former Merc owner (winter 2010 finished me) I would say that the quality, drive and space in the estate leaves my former C Class dead in the water. At an average £400 Merc service, irrespective of fixed pricing, my pocket is a lot happier too. Also while the coffee and ambience may not be quite as good at Skoda the genuine welcome I get from the dealer principal at Mervyn Stewart, Belfast and everyone on the staff when I call in is in stark contrast to the the gushing but insincere 'hello' from my Merc dealer. A
  13. I was speaking to a salesman in my local dealership who assured me nothing new until late 2014 at earliest. Have heard nothing about a facelift. I was reading all the press news on the Mondeo and Mazda 6. They both look very good indeed and the Mazda is available now. My sense is that Skoda are going to start slipping back in the ratings as other manufacturers up their game. That said I have my Superb nearly a year now and it just gets better and better. On the upside in the same conversation the dealer principal was over hearing about what is to come. I believe the new Octavia is stunning. A
  14. Well done and health to drive. I have the same model only as a 140CR DSG with sunset glass too. Been driving it now for 6 months and its great. Traded up from a Merc and haven't looked back. 4x4 is very good too when you need it.
  15. Agree entirely about the Merc diamond cuts. My Merc dealer refurbed mine as part of purchase (a demo with 1,700 miles on clock and all four wheels kerbed) declaring they would be "as good as new" - they were terrible and he had three goes over the life of the car, each time getting worse and stripping value from the car. After a lot off back and forth, Merc put four new wheels on it. Had the misfortune to kerb my Superb Luxon alloy in a very tight multi story cp- not badly, but across the face of the spokes and centre and it looked pretty awful. Got a price for a specialist refurb - £138 inc VAT. New alloy from Skoda £167 inc VAT (which I think is a fantastic price for an 18" alloy from a dealer). A bizarre footnote: I went with a new alloy, but the dealer was going to charge me £288 inc VAT. Queried this against web prices - turns out if it is a replacement its £167 but if its an upgrade its £288. Dealer was apologetic for charging wrong price, but when I queried how there could be two prices for exactly the same wheel, he said it was a feature of VAG's pricing he had not encountered before and he would be writing to them about it. Very genuine response from a senior member of the dealer team. I now have an extra Luxon if anyone is desperate...
  16. Hmm that's interesting. I have found myself going on about my Skoda and then wondering if I was overdoing it and justifying my choice. There is still a lot of brand snobbery around. Outside of taxi drivers there area not a huge amount of private Superb owners in my neck of the woods and there is this little half glance and nod thing with the other driver which happens when one comes the other way, as if we were acknowledging we are part of an enlightened club. There I go again...
  17. Yep agree with that one...and the dog can still go for his stroll around what is left of the space.
  18. I have a dog and went for the estate, but I do believe it looks better than the Twindoor. Worth the extra IMO. In the course of one day I planned and test drove the following Estates, Merc C and E Class BMW 3 and 5 Series Touring Audi A4 Avant WW Passat 170CR DSG Skoda Superb Elegance 140CR DSG I was driving a Merc C Class and was offered a stunning deal ( no...really) on another C Class. I also did the options ready reckoner of the other makes against the Superb which showed me what value the Skoda really was. However what swayed me was the drive, the space, the little touches and the all in package. It beat the Passat hands down. The other thing that made my mind up was the dealer service as against the 'take it or leave it' attitude of other brand dealers. Six months on I couldn't be happier with the estate which has proved really versatile. My wife says it suits me - not at all sure what that means... A
  19. Wow! very sorry for your trouble, but if the damage to your car was from a 50-55mph impact then be glad you were driving the car you were, judging from the impact photos. Reminds me of the time as an impoverished young man I bought one of the early Lada imports...great car...I was in the police at the time and had been working 36 hours straight. Got off duty and was heading home and within 5 minutes of the house I dozed off at the wheel. Hit a neighbour's Cortina estate at about 20-25mph. Result? one nearside headlight broken, slight damage to bonnet and punctured radiator (no such thing as airbags then). And the Cortina? Pushed through a hedge and broke the subframe. It was a write off. I'm pleased you came away with minor injuries (a bit alarming tho) and hope you are back on the road and compensated soon. A
  20. The key thing is not AutoExpress's choice of Britain's best new cars (can we extend that to the UK please?), but their Driverpower survey that sits at the back of it. Three of the top four cars for driver owner satisfaction are Skoda. Superb came second - but to a Yeti so that's ok . I would not like to have been Mercedes in third place sandwiched between a Superb and Octavia. Skoda are up there with the UK's best cars because drivers' opinions have put them there and AutoExpress has acknowledged that in their choice. Go Citigo! Best City Car and Car of the Year. I love to see the youngsters do well. Yet for all that magazines do have their favourites. What Car, while giving the Skoda 4 stars goes for the Mondeo as their choice and in their recent survey of best towing cars for caravan's the Skoda was not even mentioned, despite it being crowned tow car of the year by the caravan club in 2010!! I'd also like What Dog ( there really should be a mag with that title) to review the Superb Estate as possibly the only estate where you can take your dog for a walk without getting out of the car... Personally I'm sticking with AutoExpress as the thinking man's car mag...wonder why? A
  21. Yes I would agree about that certain something when the haldex kicks in. I have been driving in some really awful wet conditions in June on motorway and B roads and the car just feels 'planted' on the road. As a consequence I have much more confidence driving it than my previous Mercs / BMWs in similar conditions. Great car ,
  22. Good point. At the price point for a new 19" alloy from SKODA it feels more like replacing wear and tear items rather than the 'ouch' feeling of previous cars I've owned when I had to replace an alloy
  23. My last car was a Merc with diamond cut rims. Some were kerned when I got the car and the Merc dealer had them refurbed to make them "as new". To cut a long story short this had to be done three times, including once by Merc themselves and all three times degradation of the alloy was apparent within six months. I created such a fuss all four alloys were replaced with new by Merc after 3 years of ownership.
