hello folks, still contemplating changing my furby vrs se for an octy vrs..looking at the accessories, you can get 'Touch screen, DVD colour 'Colombus' Sat Nav system (inc DVD and Maxi Dot trip computer)' for £1500..it's a lot of money, but i LOVE a fancy dash board..has any one got one? if so, can you update the maps, has it got speed camera alerts, and can it play dvd's..also, can you 'hide' the screen when not in use

i,m getting closer to swapping, cos the octys have a good freebie upgrade at the moment ..any more info about it would be appreciated...............

It doesn't come with user editable POI's however someone has just written a tool to allow such edits.

Maps have recieved a couple of updates since launch - Currently V3.

You can play DVD but not hide the screen. It has excellent theatre sound even with OEM speakers.

All the good things I read on this forum prompted me to shell out the extra for the the Columbus when ordering my new car. Initially I was mega impressed, but I have been plagued with intermittent faults relating to radio reception and sound quality. Two evenings ago I tried a DVD in it for the first time and after about 5 minutes the picture froze. I am sure that I am an isolated case and if you order one you should be delighted with it, but,, if you hit a snag, i.e. an intermittent fault you are stuffed. My dealer is stalling because they are terrified to authorise a replacement unit because if it still works to a degree,then Skoda U.K. will charge them for it. ( I don't blame them in some respects )but there seems to be no-one behind the scenes that has a bit of knowledge who can talk to me about it and even come and hear it.

I am still waiting to hear from them about the V3 upgrade which my dealer seems to know nothing about.

At this moment I feel I have wasted my money.

surely it'd be cheaper to buy a Skoda/VW unit off ebay and fit it your self or have it fitted?

Is there really any point in getting factory fit sat nav? What is the advantage over a TomTom?

• dead easy to update - plug it into your PC and connect to the internet
  
• carry it in your pocket to use when walking around town - including use it to get back to where you parked your car!
  
• SWMBO can use it in her car for the £10 price of an extra mount and charger
  
• did a fly-drive to Ireland last week - took the TomTom with me to use in the hire car
  
• my company supplies hire cars for business trips - same again
  
• transfer it when you change car
  
• pay for an up market model and it includes bluetooth hands-free
  
• can afford to drop it, lose it or have it nicked 10 times and it will still cost less than factory fit
  
• it is in a far better position to see while driving than being buried down in the centre dash

disadvantage?

• doesn't look as pretty when it is stuck to the windscreen with the cable trailing across the dash. Maybe it's all those folks who think their Octy looks better from the outside who go for the flash stuff

to be fair, im looking at an MFD3 and i still think id use my tomtom for navigation, i just want it for music

Its like all things isn't it? you pay your money you take your choice. If you were a millionaire, would you buy a skoda? probaby not....let alone MFD3. If you were scraping the pennies together eery month woud you buy a TOMTOM? probably not.

Incidentally, because the MFD3 is intergrated into the system, it kills the radio when telling you instructions and also displays its nav info on the dash in a simple way.

Yes, its expensive, but so are so many other extras on cars.
