Spiritual Successor to vRS?

Featured Replies

What is the spiritual successor to the fabulous Fabia vRS?

Cheap to buy and run, fast yet frugal, the vRS is a hard act to follow.

My guess is that its the Grande Punto 1.9 Multijet, but I'd like to hear what others think.

I hestitate to suggest the Fiesta 1.6 Zetec S Duratorq. It's not as powerful but it's significanly lighter.

It's a thought, but its significantly slower and of course being petrol will not have the torque 'grunt' that is such a nice driving feature of diesels like the vRS. Plus its only three doors.

Sport with a remap? I'm sure I read on here that a dealer was supplying then ready-mapped. 145bhp or something. Nice 10% hike on the (official) figures for the Mk1...

Correct but its about to be superceded and maybe with emissions etc. they won't rush out a replacement in the same way that Skoda have dragged their feet with a vRS MkII. I understand this is because of heat issues with using the 2.0TDi unit.

The new Seat Ibiza due out soon (I think) looks nice. Have seen and FR or Cupra pic floating rould somewhere but can't find it now. Will be good to see what engines they have in them.

Edit. Found it THE NEW IBIZA

fiat might be fun to drive but will any of it still work after 100k like the furby?

ford use the PSA engines in their diesels now, so they probably arent as hardy as the tdi lump.

its a hard one but ive heard good things from vx diesels. 1.7 version seems to respond well to tuning and the corsa seems a good drive (or at least the vxr version is!)

just got another 06 plate vrs furby in today and during the quick run about in it too make sure everything is working fine, i remembered how fun these really are!

Fiats are built well these days. Nothing like they used to be.

Seat seem to have a pretty confused model range these days with leons and Alteas all priced pretty close to oneanother, the Ibiza will need to come in quite a little lower to be a serious proposition and I can't see how they will be able to do it personally.

Yes, I reckon it has to be a Fiat but as I haven't driven one lately I'll have to reserve judgement.

The new Fiesta 1.6 TDCI Zetec S is a nice looking machine

I dont think any of these really compare to the VRS in terms of both performance and looks combined. Skoda really hit the nail on the head with the fab VRS.

Duratorq's a diesel. :)

Fiesta 1.6 Zetec S

100bhp 1.6 Petrol Duratec or 90bhp 1.6 TDCi Duratorq.

A mate had one whilst his Audi was in being repaired. He found the performance interesting but noted the "acres of plasticy interior" ;)

You are SO right! I guess this is why they are holding their value so well despite a generally depressed s/h car market.

The mkII Skoda doesn't have the old car's presence, it's too high and too narrow so even if Skoda can come up with vRS mkII it still won't match the old car.

The mk1 Fabia's interior is much better than the fiesta's, but the replacement is due out soon...

When? Any pics?

Fiat 500 is too pokey and while i appreciate some may like the looks they are not to my taste at all. Bit to femanine. I looked for a next move form the fab VRS and ended up going petrol so imo that says it all. There simply is not a equivelant on the market today. I am awaiting the new VRS, looking forward to seeing what it looks like and performs like. Skoda have set the bar high so will be a tough act to follow,.

Have to agree

Cheap as chips to run, something a little different, a hoot to drive without having the same levels of performance as 200hp+ bigger hatches

Ticks all the boxes that made me get my original Fabia VRS
