Felly engine oil replacement question

Featured Replies

Good morning all!!!

Another day, another question... :P

So, I replaced my temp sensor on my 1.3Mpi Felly, and no more hot restart problem (I had to wait 30 mins after shutting down the car, to be able to restart it) since then (approx. one month since the replacement), the temp is now correctly shown on the dashboard, and I also find the car more "responsive", more "in da shape"!!!

For the record, I just bought the car two months ago, and while having a look inside it, the last owner didn't take good care of it. I don't know when was the last oil change, or else... For example, the air filter is... not existing at all for the moment!!!

So, I decided to do the servicing myself. Not a tough job if you know what you do.

The thing is I'm a frenchman (Sorry about that... ;)) living in Ireland, without the huge toolbox i left in France! :(

So, I'll have to buy a tool called a Spanner (I'm also learning new vocab as well :D), but I don't know the size of the bolt under the engine, to release the dirty engine oil.

Can anyone tell me the size I need to buy, please..?

I promise, I will buy a Haynes manual, but I need the info ASAP, as my girlfriend now uses the car everyday since it works correctly...

Also, is it simple to unmount the electric distribution block onto the spark plugs..?

Thanks in advance!

PS: Don't hesitate to correct my english, I'll appreciate!

If you're buying new spanners, sets are usually about the price of 2 loose items. Similar argument applies to socket set, plus rachet, tommy bar, and a couple of extension pieces.

the spanner you need to undo the oil drain plug is 19mm

Thanks to both of you for your answers. So if I concatenate both ideas :

I must find a set of spanner, with a 19mm one inside! :D

Any idea about the electric distribution block onto the spark plugs..?

Also, I found an oil additive to clean the engine's inside from Wynn's... Do you think it is safe to use it, or not..?

Oil additive to clean inside of engine. I have used them once, I think they're little more than a can of diesel that breaks the oil down. When I used it and drove about 100 miles (as per instructions) and dropped the sump bolt oil flowed out uncontrollably and overflowed my drain can and went all over the road. So they do work at thinning down the oil.

I think most people recommend to drain the current oil, and then use a proper flushing oil though, for example Comma Flush Out Oil - 5 Litres [CO-FO5L] - £9.99 - Wilco Direct - Discount Car, Bike & Leisure Accessories, Direct To You! it's a 5 litre bottle but says it's ok to use half the normal engine load, so as that is 4 litres half the bottle one time and half the bottle can be saved till later. It says not to drive around on flushing oil, but I can't see how it's any different to sitting there with your foot on the pedal keeping the revs up - so mayaswell go on a bit of a quick trip with it, maybe shopping, then drain it and fill up with good oil :)

My combi spanner set (ring spanner at one end, open ended at the other, one size on each spanner) goes up to 20mm, as will most 1/2" drive socket sets.

Personally, I've never used a flushing oil; just done an oil and filter change, driven the car for 1_000 miles (1_600km) or so, and done another change, then timed the next after that as if I hadn't done the middle one.

Thanks anewman!

I'll give it a go! And let you all know about it!

Last question of the day:

Do I need to change the washer of the Sump oil drain..? If so, where can I find some..? Or at least, one ^^...

For the moment, I'm looking on internet, but will give a try to Halford, or some other motor factor shop...

The books all say you need to change the sump washer, but I used the same one for 3 changes on a ZX. After than I needed a new plug, which came with a new washer. Any decent motor factor (or even Halfrauds) should have them.

Any idea about the electric distribution block onto the spark plugs..?

This is easy to remove:

1, Disconnect the wiring plug from the end of the block

2, Unscrew and remove the two socket-headed bolts underneath the block

3, Carefully pull the block off the spark plugs - pull towards you, not upwards.

Hope this helps.

the spanner you need to undo the oil drain plug is 19mm

:)Apologies if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the 1.3 engine's sump bung needs a 22mm spanner, the 1.6 needs a 19mm spanner.

:o actually i think you might be right

Allen keys needed on my coil pack, so not socket-headed bolts

12" crescent wrench then, or does it have a square or hex drive head inside?

1.3 engine's sump bung needs a 22mm spanner
I confirm this!!! Not a 19mm spanner! ;)

So here I am, back from my DIY weekend!

I did change engine oil, oil filter and the spark plugs... I didn't change the air filter, because there was none installed in, so I add one!

My Felly runs now very nice and smoothly, I can feel it!

I also fix my heater motor... with a pen's spring! :D One of the springs that holds the bended part on the rotor was broken, letting the bended part dangling. So I took the only thing I had to fix it, a pen, put the thing back together, sprayed some WD40, and tested successfully!

I will now have to work around the braking system. Front discs replacement, pads, and I'll have to check the rear parts too! I'm gonna check Jorily's Ebay shop again! ^^

I don't know how the last owner did the maintenance, or else, but the car needs some attentions, so:

Do you think I'll need to clean the injection/fuel system..? (cleaning injectors, changing fuel filter, etc...) The car's mileage is 65 000 miles.

I also bought myself a Haynes manual! :P

Thanks to all for the help! ;)

Good job, well done

I enjoyed the pen spring bit - owners of today's posh cars won't be able to do the same :D

:iagree: too; the pen spring is class bodging.

Good one - proper DIY!

Just to throw a spanner in the works, lol.

I would recommend using a socket, and rachet / torque wrench. Rather than a spanner.

You get a better grip on it, and you can torque it up correctly.
