Bizarre rust??

Featured Replies

I have just noticed some rust on the strips that seperate the windows on the rear doors. It is slightly bubbled where it meets the rubber seal at the bottom. Thing is it's like that on both sides  I am quite perplexed that i have rust in this odd place! Question what the flip can I do to get rid?? Car still has warranty but I very much doubt this would be covered.

If it's under warranty it should be covered.

IIRC the window separators are alloy and poorly painted/treated.

It shouldn't spread , but looks unsightly and is annoying.

I could really do with a good online manual for the octy (used to use one for my mr2) so I can see how to get the pesky thing out and replace it.

Don,t DIY it if its under warranty get the dealers to sort it out.

a 2002 car won't be under a dealer warranty any more :-(

I have a bit of rust there on mine (2001). I tried to get it done on the anti-perforation warranty (while having my boot resprayed), but they were having none of it :-(

I assume it is caused from the window rubber strip rubbing the vertical bar as the car/door flexes over bumps/etc?

I have a warranty as I bought it from a dealer in Oct :)

What option did they give to you? Could you get the part over the counter?

I don't have any part numbers to hand - sorry. I thought I might sand the rust and repaint, but have not got around to it yet....

Pfft typical  Not covered  I am a bit peeved as it has blatently rusted from the inside out!!!!! I am contemplating writing to Skoda about them giving some sort of goodwill gesture. As this is not acceptable really.

Same problem on my 2000 - Haynes manual says this part is replaceable but I haven't been able to find one in any of the usual places - anyone else have any luck / part numbers?

Does the manual show you how to take it out???

Door cards off. Wind the window all the way down. There is one screw (philips) at the top (inside the rubber, you'll see it if you look up into the top of the rubber seal. The other screw is at the bottom, accessible once the door card is off. Its a torx screw and will be very stiff. Once they are both off, the strip AND the window both pull out together, be careful though as the top has a large lip and needs to be pulled carefully through the rubber at the top.

I assume it then just pulls off of the window glass.. but be careful..

Is this the voice of a similar experience speaking???

Yeah, but for a different reason. Its more difficult getting it back in as you have to pull the top rubber seals away from the door and put the top of the window/strip back in before the bottom otherwise you split the rubber. TBH, its taking off the door card that'll take the time though :)

I think some diy will be attempted :D

was it your local dealer you checked about them being covered under warranty? if you can be bothered and have the time get some pics up and i'll ask the boys this end their opinion if you like?

:iagree: 'Tis rubbish imho! I have started to diy it now, as I can't be assed with the hassle tbh.

Forgot to tell you that you'll need to take the window seal thingy off after you remove the door card. It sort of slots over (bottom part of) the top of the lower part of window frame. You'll see what I mean when you take the door card off.

Oops forgot to ask. Richard did the door seals come away easily enough? Also did you have any water ingress probs afterwards?

Cheers

Yeah, they just pull away from the door easily enough. If not, just use a plastic childs knife (or similar, just don't use anything that might scratch the paint) to lever them off. You only really need to pull a few inches (in length) away from the top of the door frame to enable you to get the top of the bit you are removing off. There is no reason for water ingress once you are done as it all goes back together as it started.

So basically it's

remove door trim

remove weatherstrip

undo 2x screws

lift out

To replace

lift up door seal

slot lip over

and reverse the rest

I can't believe I am taking my car to bits already  It's like my MR2 all over again! I just need to get some primer and I am good to go :D

Yep. You managed to compress my garbage into 7 lines of correctness.

When you come to put it back in, make sure it slides back over the main window otherwise you'll have problems. You'll see anyway before you take it out.

Will take photos when I do it :D

Does the manual show you how to take it out???

Yes but quite badly - I wish Haynes would start printing decent quality photos in their books
