Bored of my scud, help me...

Featured Replies

Hi :P

Only had my Fabia vRS for 3 or 4 months now and i'm already looking at swapping it for something else :thumbdwn:

I quite like the car but it just doesn't do it for me. Doesn't look that great, doesn't go that great and it isn't very good around corners. It is however quite economical and comfy.

It's still got a year and a bits warranty left & vwag finance so i can't really mod it, plus i can't, i have a 2nd car that i spend stupid amounts modding. Beginning to think my impulse purchase wasn't a great choice. Then again i work 25 miles away and do plenty of leisure miles so i can't really see how i'm going to find a car that will do reasonable mpg, is comfy, not painfully slow and goes around corners. So i'm a bit stuck really.

Previously i've grown to love cars, but i can't with the scud, help me love my skoda :D

Ps here are a few pics. I have changed the plates to ones with gb euro thingies at the sides now too.

Have you thought about a remap?

A very shiny looking car their, good job. I would suggest a remap too, and maybe some new springs and dampers and a rear anti roll bar. Then some Toyo T1R's on the wheels. That should make it go a bit better, as well as cornering a bit better. Or sell it and buy an already modded one.

Remap, custom exhaust system with the sound you want, and rear anti roll bar.

Those things should put a big smile on your face each time you drive it.

I'd suggest mods as above..... Although you say you don't really want to mod as it is financed etc.....

If you're that concerned about the finance side of things how about mods that can be removed easily putting the car back to standard in less than an hour???

Rear ARB, Seat front strut brace, PD160 intake, Cotton panel filter, Dragon box.

With those five mods you'll see a big difference and the car can be back to standard within 30-60 minutes if reqd.

I've had mine for just over two years and have had the dragon box and Rear ARB on for 6-9 months and it's a whole new car again.

Cheers

Dave.

Hi: You probably already know this but Skodas are a bit bland anyway. I think German cars are like this. They make cars to do a good job and thats about it really with them. I was bored with my Octy 2 right after I got it but it's still a great car and better made/engineered than anything in it's class. My opinion is you get bored with everything after a while. Eddie Irvine (ex F1 driver) once said he was bored in a GP. How anyone could get bored driving an 800 bhp F1 car is anybodys guess. Be happy and drive safely!:)

Don't forget the all important 312mm brake upgrade. Easily done and you there is always a 2nd hand market when your done with them and swap the fabia for something else.

Modding doesn't have to be expensive and all of the above mods mentioned by WaveyDavey and myself aren't that expensive and will certainly make the fabia much more fun to drive

get a remap you big gay.

What about a couple of "reversible" handling and performance mods :

1) Lowering springs all round

2) Rear ARB (don't bother with front strut-brace. Its a girlie mod thats easy to do but works like nail-varnish - colourful but prevents you doing other things)

3) Panel-filter and PD160 intake

Look in the for sale section - there are 2nd hand PD160's and rear ARB's available from time to time.

For relatively small money you can sharpen up the handling and add a bit of urge to your progress.

HTH

Remember that Fabias are people too and not just for Christmas.

Sounds to me like you bought the car for the wrong reasons.

As mentioned there are a lot of mods that might put the spark back into it for you but you would probably be better off with somthing else.

I was thinking the same thing.

People often expect too much from a car with a sporty badge. The vrs is a perfect all rounder, bit of fun, cheap to run and subtle styling blends in quite nicely.

Add a few mods and youll love it, I love my fabia now.... its got enough power to embarrass most cars on the road and the handling and stopping to suite...... well it stops ok but handling is still a work in progress ;)

you need to sort the handling out ! i cant believe the diference the way it bites and just goes.....hardly and understeer

If your thinking this and you have only just got the car.......sell it ! unless your like me and get bored of cars easly  i just have to keep this one for a while ;)

alex, this is my 11th car, i've also had 5 motorbikes, all by the time i was 25.

my attention span is tiny and i don't usually keep a car for more than 6 months at the most.

since getting the skoda and doing my current set of mods i've pretty much realised that there isn't much else for this kinda price range that has this kinda performance/economy balance. yeah it doesn't handle the best, but that can easily be sorted out.

i do sometimes get itchy feet and think of selling up, but tbh there isn't much out there that i can see that would be as good an all rounder.

There are at least a gazillion reasons why I want to swap my vRS for something else (wrong image, not big enough, manual gearbox) and my wife actually needs a new car, and she'd have mine, and I could have a new one, but instead I'm getting some 17" alloys, 215 tyres, a Jabba ARB, some Eibach spings and an MFD sat nav. Maybe some big brakes (although I don't actually have an issue with the brakes). The fact is that I just can't think of anything that would put a smile on my face like this does. It just does it for me every time I drive it. It's actually not that fast (no engine mods on this one) but it feels fast, and everyone that gets in the passenger seats seems to think we're going waaay too fast. And even with diesel at £1.30/l I still think it's cheap to run.

Mine is also on a VAG lease, but there is no way I'm not buying it, so it doesn't actually matter. And because I'm over 40 my insurance only will only go up £35/year (to £270/year!) and that's because of the Sat Nav(?!)

Have you tried it with the traction control off? It's a lot more challenging to drive smoothly. Rev it to the war-paint. All the time. It's fun.

I really don't wanna mod it, well nothing serious anyway. A full suspension setup inc ARBs is extremely tempting but again warranty and finance. I am hoping that my console bushes will get done under warranty, then after that i'll get it lowered, my experience with eibachs is that they are just as soft as standard but lower, so they make little difference to handling if you like B roads. I actually think they handle pretty tidy and grip well, especially in the wet, it's just the body roll that gets on my nerves.

Bet i'll end up with a remap at some point soon, none of this tuning box nonsense though a proper map.

Hey Adam, i am suprised you've kept the car so long, let me know when you're down here and take me for a spin to let me see what yours is like :)

i don't visit kent too often, come to london the centre of the universe and i'll be happy to let you take it for a spin.

warenty is for old people and gays,my 07 se goes round corners like its on rails, and soon will be boasting over 300bhp,some say its the best handling vrs about, and no i don't still have a warenty:P

Lol, totally classic

Lol, totally classic

thank you:D

Thought Mk1 Octy's were known as 'Scud's'?

Don't know what alternative really. Most cars are much of the same nowadays.Maybe that 100bhp Panda?

I have to agree i personally think the Fabia has no personality, iv'e modded a wee bit and still not in love with it :(

Hopefully going over 200bhp might change my mind though ;)

I want to get a new exhaust at some point as I do miss the noise from my old car

its the only one of two cars out of over 30 i have ever loved,i've had 3 now:D

the other car i loved was my r32 skyline, now that car had character and attitude:D

A fabia is never going to be a hot hatch. It's a warm hatch for the average motorist.

It feels fast, but corners badly.

Panda 100 or a mini are great fun for throwing the car around and at opposite ends of the price range too.

If you dont love it with 170bhp then you wont love it with more power.

It becomes quite a handful with 230bhp. Its still no fastre round corners and becomes quite a dangerous tool in the wrong hands.

I have SH!t myself on more than one occasion where a lapse in thinking has ended up with me and the fabia in a situation id rather not be in ;) Ie traveling sideways at approx 70mph :o
