Foglights and stubbornly sooty tailpipe

Featured Replies

1. Rear fog lights, should they both light up? Only my drivers side one does despite me putting a new bulb in the N/S due to one of the filaments being kaput. T'was a PITA too as Halfrauds want you to us a 380 bulb when it wont fit - you need a 585 I think as the pins are ofset.

2. Can anyone suggest a good method of removing all the baked on soot from the inside of my tailpipe? The outer edges of it are fine but the inner bit where the 2 holes are is black. Oven cleaner perhaps? :D

Cheers,

Chris.

1.

Only 1 fog light at the rear o/s (drivers side)

And 2 reverse lights.

2.

I use wheel acid and some fine wire wool!

Edit: I'm an idiot!

For the tailpipes I use a bit of tinfoil and some Metal polish, works a treat

Thanks guys, will try these suggestions. The stuff seems welded on, and greasy too.

As for the lights, just tested them and I've got reverse lights on both sides, but the fog light is only on the O/S. Is there a way of making them both come on? They've got identical bulbs in either side so it can't be that.

Try autosol or zildjian cymbal cleaner for the exhaust

You should only have a drivers side rear foglight. You can run the wiring over from the drivers side to the passenger side easily enough if you wish.... There's are quite a few posts on it on here.

I use Brasso to clean the exhaust tailpipe..... Brings it up a treat.

Cheers

Dave.

SWMBO used a lemon on the exhaust on our car and it worked a treat.

I just tryed this lemon method, didn't really do anything, but was i ment to cut the lemon first? If so, into how many sections?

Well your facetious comments above show it is a joke post

Though for the exhaust ( why you would want to clean the inside ones mind boggles) Yes oven cleaner

Rear fog light there is just one wired up, but if you want both you can run a wire of sufficient amperage (35amp) along the boot well. and up to the opposite lamp

National

when we done it, we cut the lemon in half.

Oh no please don't tell me you used an angle grinder and cut your motor in half

LOL to all the lemon comments. :D

I tried wonder wheels and it didn't really touch it. But, I did have a go with oven cleaner last night and it cut straight through it. Bit of elbow grease and it's now nice and shiny. :D

Only problem was as soon as I started the car, all the sooty oven cleaner that had gone down the pipes was fired out all over my patio. :(

As for the foglights, ta for the feedback. At least I know nothing's broken. I'm tempted to wire the other one up for symmetry's sake. :D

Welcome to my world :P

Everytime i start my car it fires lumps of coal onto the block paving

And when it rains it washes the soot off the boot and onto the block paving.

Bet you can tell I am popular with the parents ;)

My exhaust pipe is fooked, i painted it silver to hide the black burnt stuff, but now its black again :o i might just paint it matt black, as it stays silver for about a nano second anyway.

Good old halfords  That reference guide never ceases to amaze me. For all the hassle they cause with people complaining about purchased wrong bulbs I simply wouldnt bother having them if i were in charge. ;)

Another vote for Solvol Autosol metal polish. :)

i gave the exhaust a good blast with a jetwash and pushed out the water that got in the exhaust with a good hard boot. then used brasso.

Now I've managed to get the thing clean I think it will be an easier job to keep on top of. It was that thick before I almost had to chisel it off. Cif oven cleaner rules. :D

From now on I think a good swab with wonder wheels will probably do the trick as it will only me minor coverage I'm dealing with.

Fecking book.....the bulbs they ask you to use wont even go in the holders let alone anything else. I mentioned it to the blonde chick on the desk when we were paying for the second bulb and she was most apologetic yet wasn't interested in which part of the book was wrong.

Not sure why you need cooker cable of 35a, when a 21 watt rear fog lamp draws about 2 amps.

35a @ 12v is 420 watts. That's one hell of a bright rear fog lamp!!

Was it wakefield? will have been Sue you dealt with then.

, thats becuase all the book is wrong ;) I have tried before to get them to change it. Same with polos 2000-2002 they say its a 382 for the stop tail when its clearly a 380. and seat alhambra, uses an h7 for dipped beam when the book says 448. thast just 2 that i encountered on saturday alone. Makes more hassle than good.

Glad its all sorted though, hope it doesnt put you off from visiting our store in the future ;) i hear they have a very knowledgable audio fitter/bodger. ;)

I had to laugh because first time we went to the counter (with the wrong bulbs) she asked if I'd like them fitting. :D

I felt like saying 'yes, get me that lovely stereo/ GPS bodger man out here to do it' :D

The books fairly accurate

I just get mine from a local shop these days

Havent used powerbulbs yet.

**I noticed this when my cousin bought his Fabia

2x reversing lights and only one fog light. Oddly though there is a bulb in the nearside!!

for cleaning the sooty exhaust pipe and also fro cleaning the brake dust off the wheels I use Hope **** shifter, it's a bike cleaning product. I use it once a month on SWMBO's fabia and it keeps it relativly clean.

That really useful fitter is really useful at that halfords and has helped me out.

From when I used to work in a Citroen dealership, I found the best thing to remove the stuff off the wheels is 'de-waxer'.

The stuff they apply to new cars which come with a waxy overcoat. Spray it on, leave it 5mins, wash off with hose, good as new.

Not sure if its somthing you can get from Halfrauds, but its the business.
