Track rod end thread rotates while doing up nut

Featured Replies

Trying to do up the track rod end to hub carrier steering arm but the thread keeps rotating.

Have tried some taps with a hammer and block of wood, putting my weight down on top of the track rod end and copper grease on the thread.

Only thing that comes to mind at present is to use a ball joint separator upside down so it pushes the track rod end in and then do up the nut (but not sure if this would damage the track rod end). Or to use the specified slotted nuts rather than a nyloc.

Thanks in advance

Have you the use of a windy gun? If not try a drill with a socket attatchment this should be quick enough to zip it up

I get the feeling the torque required to turn the nut is more than the torque required to turn the track rod end bit, so my guess would be it would just spin the track rod end thread around? I'll try get myself some of these attatchments anyway and give it a go.

i thought that would happen when somebody suggested using a nyloc....

you think that's bad?? you wait till you need to undo it again

So to dealers to buy proper slotted nuts I guess.

dont forget to get some new split pins too

Are you sure the nuts you have got are the right thread?

According to Skoda parts catalogue nut required is m12.

With digital vernier calipers interior measurements

Nyloc m12 nuts 10.3 mm (exterior spanner size 19mm)

Original nut measures 10.9mm (exterior spanner size 18mm)

so the threads measure 0.6 mm narrower.

Measuring narrowest part of thread on track rod ends I get 11.1mm

Therefore looks easiest to use original nuts. Hopefully some copper grease on the split pin and a little on the nuts thread and it will come off no trouble when I want it to.

if you are measuring 11.1mm that makes it an m11 thread

What i meant was , is the pitch of the thread the same? A lot of steering components have a smaller pitch than general components, ie, 12mm x1mm or 12mm x 1.25mm

Ah that could be why then, parts catalogue specifies M12x1.25 - the nuts I bought were M12 with no other measurements specified so assumed (*** u me jokes welcome) they'd be ok.

Looks like I wanted...
