And the mods go on!!!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Most of you probably know that I have the AmD 230bhp conversion carried out on my RS, which included a bigger turbo (which generates more heat). What I have found is the performance of the RS drops off as the engine gets hotter on long runs (which is normal for a car with a bigger turbo with limited intercooling?).

So I decided to look at the possibility of a FMIC, Star performance make a FMIC but the cost and hassle didn't make sense. So I spoke with the guys at AmD who came up with the dual TT intercoolers to replace the single small intercooler in the RS.

And all I can say is what a difference it has made to the performance, car feels stronger and pulls much better with no loss of power. I have also had an uprated (hand made) clutch fitted which gives me more opportunity to explore the power of the RS.

Also had the front and rear brake pads changed to the Ferodo pads recommend by Jon, the brake fluid was also changed as per Jon's recommendations. And finally have my rear disc changed under warranty, now I have the brakes I have always wanted.

There are a few things left to do now one of which is to change the standard RS wheels for some OZ Superleggeras and some Pirelli Zero Neros (doing this next week). Now do I go for 18" or 19" wheels? And to have a new rear section made up by Hayward & Scott also next week.

I am sending some pictures to Manny for him to post on his website.

Top mods, thumbs up. (where's the ohyes smilie gone)

Common consensus is that 18s are best to keep the ride / handling sweet. Although the OZs weigh about as much as an empty fag packet so either size would probably be ok (don't know about rubbing on the arches though). Financially, 19s are still a bit rare so rubber will cost you more per corner, if that is a consideration.

Hi stathap,

Yea I am a bit dubious about having 19" wheels I know a few RS owners have fitted 19" but I am not too sure how much worked was required to make them fit. To be honest 18" are my preferred option but I would love to have 19" but installing these would increase my costs and also not too sure how the RS handles with 19" on. My RS currently runs H&R springs with Koni adjustables which I adjusted a bit more today and the RS handles even better ( I know some people don't like the Konis that much but they are fine for me).

Oh I forgot to mention I've also ordered the upper and lower strut brace from Advanced Motorsport Techologies I should have these just after Easter.

Sorted. All good

I was going to say that as soon as you put bigger rims on you really need to lower the kiddy at least 35mm otherwise it looks like a big rollerskate on stilts.

I keep looking at GMax shocks and springs but they seem a bit British and too cheap to be true. I'm sure one of the old school light brigade have an opinion or two :p

I Have added lloyds intercooler pics to his gallery. For those who cant wait, here they are

Looking good, cant wait to see those wheels.

What is the bigger turbo, the K04 type and do you have the Milltek turbo back system? If so isn't that like an S3 spec without the injectors, would have thought it would be quite a bit more than 230bhp - more like 260+?

Chrish I have the K04 (KKK) type turbo, with the full Milltek exhaust system Inc cat back. The upgrade included new injectors, remap and an air intake pipe. The bhp figure of 230 does seem a bit low considering all the work that has been done? However, I was given a print out of the dyno run which showed to the bhp figure of 232. I think I am going to find a good local rolling road to check these figures.

With Superchip and full Milltek seems to be around 230 (see Tavia's R/R results )so yours should be more than that. I have been wondering whether its worth getting it remapped after the Milltek to optimise the set-up. Maybe yours needs that as well. If so would AmD oblige you or would you try Jabbasport with hindsight?

I am going to have a chat with AmD about bringing the car back for a remap and rolling road diag. I am sure with all the mods I have had done the RS should be producing more bhp that AmD has quoted me?

I'd be interested to hear what they have to say. I have asked Jabbasport the same question and awaiting reply.

Spoke to AmD who informed me that the car doesn't need a remap after installing the dual IC. As for the bhp figure the figure of 230bhp is an conservative estimate. According to them the bhp is hard to measure because on a rolling road you can't get the same sort of conditions needed to get the dual IC to work correctly.

I am still going to take my RS to a rolling road to check this out for myself. Power Engineering of Uxbridge is just ten minutes away from where I work so I'll book it in there soon.

Based on what AmD have said about conservative estimate of the bhp figure and my own feel for the car I would say that the bhp figure is more likely to be around 250?

I would be interested to see your results from PE as that is where I had my car chipped and where Tavia got his tested after fitting the Turbo back Milltek.

OK chrish I'll keep you posted, what are PE like?

They know there stuff, crummy location though. Their road has a reputation for being conservative, mine showed 200 after the chip and 180 before and I know plenty of TVR Griff's that struggle to get more than 280 ( but that's a different story). Who are you going to see there?

Chris

Chris have you been anywhere else to have a dyno run since PE seem to be a bit conservative? I don't know who I will be seeing at PE I am waiting for them to get to me.

No, they haven't repied to my email and I believe that is because they are so busy. I'll send them a reminder. Has anyone else got a reply to any emails from them?

No and don't be put off by that. What you want is comparative testing. Don't wait for them to call you as they are very busy and will book you weeks out. Call them back and get either Mervyn or Chris directly on the phone as they are have the most experience. There is a Dave there who does the Superchips stuff but dont think he does general r/road development, but he has done quite a few RS's, Seats and Audi S3's though.

They know there stuff on Turbo cars.

If you can find out in advance who is going to test it - go for the two names I gave you and they should give you their advice as well as the printouts. Do you still have the std chip as then they can baseline it? I'll await your news.

Went to Power Engineering today for my power run, the RS is producing 230bhp. However, the power curve is not as it should be too much fluctation. The guys at PE belive that the RS should have been remapped after fitting the dual ICs. I am contacting AmD today to see what they have to say about this. If they are unwilling to carryout a remap, it looks like I'll have to take a trip to Jabbasport.

Stay tuned for further updates

Thats interesting as 230 bhp on their road is a strong figure. What about the peak torque figure and revs?

Who did you see there as they know their stuff about how to get the most out of turbos engines? I would be interested to see what Jabbasport have to say about remapping after a Milltek is fitted as well- they didn't answer me but said I could call them up and discuss.
