Head Gasket gone

Featured Replies

Checked the car today and low and behold there is oil in the water.......i mean a lot of oil!

So swapped the pipes around the oil filter jacket to see if there is any coming out of there as apparently they are prone to craking, so far i've done 15 miles and not seen a drop of oil come out. If that is the case then i can just get a new one but it's looking more like the gasket, OH THE JOYS!!!

Right before GTI international as well, i'm so gutted you wouldn't believe. Means i've got 2 weeks to get it sorted from now and also have to find about £500 to get it sorted, i was really looking forward to my first go on the strip and meeting everyone on the stand. Just hope i can get it sorted before!!

Wish me luck! :(

Just before anyone asks it's done 108k, VRS running 235bhp.

I doubt it will be a head gasket. In 9 years working on 1.8Ts I havent seen one do it.

I have however changed hundreds of oil coolers, A good idea your test but it may need the water going around it to draw the oil out.

New oil cooler, flush the cooling system well (about four times with flushing additive, VAG do an excellent one) and then refill with coolant in a new header tank.

You can do a simple block test to check the headgasket. This will check for exhaust gasses in the cooling system, may or may not help.

Thanks Lummox, I’ve seen your work so your opinion is much appreciated!

I'll order the part on Monday and get it swapped over!

Its got to be worth a shot.

Right i've got the part ordered, gotta wait for it to come then will give it a go!

Wish me luck, if i don't make GTI international i am going to cry!

Well i've had the oil cooler off for a couple of days now and done over 100 miles with it off.

The oil level has stayed the same so i'm hoping it was that!

Gonna change it over with the new one and flush all the previous oil out my water this weekend.......wish me luck!

Changed the Oil cooler today, also gave the car a full service whilst i was around the area (ready for GTI International next week)

Flushed the system 4 times and have done 100 miles round trip and so far (fingers crossed) everything looks well

In short people, if you get oil in your water and you think the head gasket has gone before you pay £450 upwards to get it fixed change the oil cooler first ;)

:)

Good result. Just prepare to be breathing in mongrel smoke down the 1/4 mile though. :P

Another challenge!! This is going to be an interesting day, i must get my "make diesel cars that have more torque than i could ever screw out of my engine slow" device out ;)

At least i'll be able to get there under the power of my own engine, whether or not i leave under the power of my own engine is another matter lol

I may need all that torque you diesel lovers produce to take me back to brum

I'll tow you as far back as Lutterworth. :P
