Rear screen - please can you check yours?

Featured Replies

Whilst polishing my new (55 reg) VRS, I noted that at the bottom corners of the rear screen, there appears to be a slight "cloudiness" that looks like it is behind the glass. Is this normal for the car, and is it anything to be concerned about?

Does anybody else's car have these marks?

Thanks, Ian

Most of them have it tbh.

I'd only worry about it if your window falls out.

Mines got cloudy marks all over it - I think it could be delaminating - maybe I should get it replaced, either that or continue to ignoring it :)

Can't say I've noticed it in the corners, maybe its becoming unstuck..?

Mine has it in the bottom corners. I think it is something to do with the lamination...?

Yes it's delamination.

There are IIRC at least 5 threads going into the detail

Your dealer should replace under warranty if you have one

...except it's not really delamination, as only the front windscreen is laminated; all the others are toughened. ;) It's just the black paint on the inside of the glass gradually dissolving!

There are, however, a few threads on it already, and it is a warranty job if you have one!

Thank you all for the input. I just tried a search and found one thread - tried searching before posting, but no luck due to not searching for the right thing:O.

Yes, I have warranty, but is it an important repair? Don't want to waste a good screen if it will go on for years, but on the other hand if it is a genuine 'fault' I dont't want that either.

Is it just cosmetic, or should I push for a screen replacement?

Thanks, Ian

If it's still in warranty, you might as well get it done unless it's a major hassle getting it to a dealer. Mine's been like that for absolute ages, but it's never caused any functional issues like leaks or problems with the heater elements...

Ive noticed this on a few fabias before.

I saw 3 that all has this problem the same day.

Mine is fine though.

It would really bother me if it happned to mine! I'd have to get it replaced!

Doesn't bother me :)

Mine is showing some signs... No worries until it falls out :D

I have some signs of clouding as well, mainly in the bottom right hand corner. I might consider getting it replaced, under my insurance's glass cover, if potential delamination would be seen as a legitimate claim. What do other people think?

Also, need to get my front screen changed due to a chip that's growing, so perhaps it could be done under the one excess? :rubchin:

Steve

Had my rear screen replaced under warrany without any problems at the dealer in Cannock when just 3 months shy of my 3yrs.

In fact, it was the only bit of good service I got from them! :)

"and it is a warranty job if you have one!"

An update - I showed the dealer whilst picking up some new mats last week and I was informed that it is a fault and a screen was ordered up under warranty with no questions or issues. Apart from the screen dissolving I noted some scratches on it as well - looks like the previous owner got over-enthusiastic whils de-icing the screen:mad:.

I tried getting mine replaced cos of this under the extended Skoda warranty rather than the original one......they said no. After an argument with SUK about it not saying anything in the extended warranty book about glass defects not being covered (it doesn't say anything - Skoda were quite rude I might add) they agreed to pay for half of it but the offer was only open for a little while.

I never bothered with the offer in the end - couldn't be bothered with the hassle and expense of paying the dealer to fit a new one. It's still the same after a year and has not gotten any worse.

The wife's Fabia has this issue on the bottom left hand corner. Will bother doing

anything about it because it will be going soon :)

Myself, wouldn't worry about it, at least not as much as I would

of accidental scratching of bodywork (probably unduly) in the event

of someone replacing it.

Just to clarify though, all the glass, with the exception of the front

windscreen is tempered (toughened) glass and has no 'interlayer' (plastic

membrane between two thin sheets) so, assuming this is what is referred

to as 'de-lamination', don't worry about that. :)

The black bit of the screen is bonded (laminated) to the screen, this is the bit which is then bonded to the body so in essence it can completely come away leaving your glass on the floor and a black, rear screen shaped loop of film bonded to your tailgate......

But in practice this never happens, it is warranty though as stated before and is delamination, if you own a <3yr old one go get it changed but don't stress it, mine is BAD and still holding on in there......

Sorry just noted your's is 55 plate, edit to above, Go get it done now and then you have another 3 years to watch the new one slowly degrade..... lol

you should be able to get it done on the insurance glass cover, Because it is toughened glass and not laminated like the front, it WILL NOT COME OUT IN ONE PEACE, so the insurance would not be able to inspect it. I had somin similar done on my old hyundai coupe as one of the rear windows starting doing the same.

As for it scratching the car paint? my Dad has fitted windscreens and auto glass for 20+ years, and he says it is quite simple to do without getting glass in the car and scratching the paint.

Mine is doing it realy bad down both sides so i am hoping to get mine replaced soon.

On the other hand if you do want your paint scratched, and your rear screen scratched too, I can recommend Griffin Mill Skoda, they did an excellent 'job' of mine

ps Laminated to glass companies = thin film in between 2 pieces of glass (front screen)

Laminated definition = joined by bonding thin sheets together

Skoda refer to this fault as rear screen delamination

Dealers refused to change mine when it was in warranty....bas***ds....I spoke to them about it but they just said they all do it after a while....

may go back in and ask them again.....then raise hell....

I've seen a couple of screens where the heated screen wires are laminated in for the purpose of a rear window. Fairly certain VAG don't do this though.
