54k on a 2.0 PD turbo, doing well mate.

Are they really that bad?

Do you reckon they don't like the long life servicing?

As already mentioned, this appears to be quite a common problem with VAG cars.

When my Toledo was being investigated for coolant loss (diagnosed as and replaced cylinder head, another not unknown problem!) the technician told me that my turbo was noisy (not that I heard it) and it was replaced under warranty.

That was somewhere around 40k mile mark.

John.

Well they change them at SEAT as well, they dont run longlife. Turbos are made in Romania, make of that what you will.

Thanks.

What's the usual fault? Is it bearings like mine or some other issue?

Oh , and do you do an oil and filter change after a blown turbo?

They dont have bearings as such. IIRC the shaft of the turbo floats on oil in a machined housing. Failure is fairly spread between seizure and the compressor wheel failing I think. Some just crack in half...lol

You should change the oil after replacing the turbo, not sure however how Skoda are these days but VW wont pay for an oil change, plus it fudges the service regime.

Oh look....

Went back to the dealers today to swap courtesy cars for a legal one , and the service receptionist mentioned my car needing a turbo and said "we get loads of those".

I now have a 1.2 litre Fabia 2 to drive for a week.

It's not particularly fast nor economical - 44mpg on the way home compared to the 60 I got going there in the PD105 octavia and my normal 54 in the PD140

Hmmmmm............. wasn't aware of this problem with the 2.0 PD140 turbo's!!!:(

The Leon has done 32K so far & the warranty runs out in Sept. However, the turbo was replaced when I picked up the car. I t had done around 26K at the time.

Maybe I should start saving for the "more reliable" turbo.;)

Sounds like mine lasted quite well if yours had failed in half the time!

Mine went at 54k and totalled the engine!!

NO NO NO!!! Please stop with all your negative stories :(

Someone please tell me the car I have just bought is a good model, a sound buy and not a pile of :dung:

Heh!

That's not good.

Bits of turbo in the cylinders?

I agree no more scary Turbo tales please:rofl:

The turbo hadn't gone completely, but the technician had picked up on the noise it was making on the pre-hand over check.

A new turbo was ordered & was fitted a week after.

Never mind the turbo

Where does coolant go? - ClubTouran.net

and Dr Z thinks he's got problems !

Not read it but I would bet pourous cylinder head, EGR cooler problems or oil cooler issues.

Bang on

Plus some more!

3 turbos' date=' various boost pipes and seals, 2 intercoolers, exhaust, drive shaft, clutch, head gasket on the last new engine, 2 oils coolers, 3 seat belts, egr valve, fuel temp sender, 2 expansion tanks etc etc etc.

First engine had oil supply problem from the turbo(s), last engine had faulty head gasket which was finally replaced and has now developed a crack somewhere which is putting oil into the coolant

Thing is, Turbos failing arnt just limited to VAG group.

I had a Nissan X-trail and the turbo went on that. Lukily I was 2 miles from the dealer, they took it off the road straight away and I got a courtesy car.

Apparently there was a problem with the ECU telling the turbo to spin when it shouldtnt so causing premature wear. I was "lucky" in that the bits from the disentegration of the turbo went into the exhaust system rather than the engine. Needed a new Catalyst too.

I am not saying that this is the cause but always always follow the cold start and engine switch off process for any turbo car you have. That is, let the engine get to a good temperature before using boost. This lets the oil to circulate. Conversly, when switching off, let the engine idle for a few moments, longer if stopping from a long heavy run to let the turbine stop spinning. As soon as you switch off, oil stops flowing the turbo will still be spinning with no oil around it.

Spot on!!

New engine, turbo, intercooler and full exhaust system due to oil dripping from tailpipe!! All in just under £5k.................Ouch

Thank god for warranties.

Ooooh feck!

That's some big lumps of metal there!

I wonder what mine will look like....

any details on whats going/gone into the new 2.0tdi CR engine? same turbo with same possible results or does the 170bhp not suffer from this? Just wondering as im still trying to stop convinving myself that i need to change mine for a VRS DSG once the warranty runs out at the end of the year.

not that I dont want to change, just that I cant really afford to as i was supposed to keep the car for another two years :D

That looked remarkably like mine!! Only my turbo bits were stapled to the job sheet in a plastic bag after being fished from the cylinders.

I am just shy of 56K miles now in my 2.0TDI, warranty runs out in september. Still on original turbo, heres hoping nothing goes wrong after september.
