PD140 turbo bearings have failed after 54k miles

I am just shy of 56K miles now in my 2.0TDI, warranty runs out in september. Still on original turbo, heres hoping nothing goes wrong after september.

Oooooo....... 2k more than mine achieved.

To add to the good news mine started making turbo on/off noises as if it's slightly off balance so I'll be asking the dealer to look at it.

Well mine is back complete with new turbo and seems to be running ok.

It certainly sounds a bit different to how the old one did even when it was running fine , so I'll have to see how it goes.

Have there been any changes to the turbo since this engine was introduced?

FWIW, my wife's VW Golf TDi 140 + DSG has now done 65k miles and had no turbo probs :thumbup:

my Octy II on the other hand took out the entire engine at just over 11k miles...:thumbdwn:

but it's since done over 20k miles on the new turbo/engine etc and (touches wood) it's been fine ;)

Just out of interest what age and model years are the ones that are going bang?

To correct what was said above about switching off . . .

The intention is not to wait for the turbine to stop - it won't while the engine is turning - but to let the turbocharger cool down. The turbo is cooled by the oil which lubricates it - not the engine coolant and it relies on a flow of oil to achieve this.

At say 85mph the turbo will be very hot - combustion temperature hot. If you stop immediately and turn off the engine (like pulling off into a motorway service area) it is still very hot and it will "cook" the oil.

The idea is to idle the engine for a period to allow the oil flow to cool the turbocharger so it does not cook the little oil that is left in it when you turn it off.

Lummox, do you know what warranty will I get on my replacement turbo?

The car is on 54k miles now and I wouldn't be surprised if Skoda try and claim that it's only covered for another 6k miles, rather than for 12 months since it was replaced.

I have very little faith in the car any more and don't want to find myself arguing over a £1500 bill if the turbo fails again.

I assume (hopefully) that this is for the GT1749 series of turbo's fitted to the 2.0 16V TDi's.

So those of us LUCKY :rolleyes: enough to have a 2.0 TDi DPF 8V get the GT1646 turbo. Is this an more reliable?

Would going to fixed servicing help this?

my car finally had its FIRST service at 35400 miles ('cos it had a new engine at 11k) and the service person said that they seem to have fixed the dodgy turbo problems now as they're sourcing from another company and he hasn't seen one for 2-3 months now ;)

My local dealers say they are getting plenty in , though that's all sorts of age cars

Mine was still going strong at 57k miles and 3.5 years old when I traded it in.

If you don't want / can't afford to change when the warranty is up, it may be worth extending it for 12 months - I was quoted around £300 - 350 IIRC by my dealer (or see what Warranty Direct will do)

Personally i'd say a turbo does suck. It pulls air into it to be compressed. Put your hand over the intake pipe and you can feel her sucking.

Turbo whistling too loudly, replacement recommended!

It doesn't seem any louder than when I bought it 6 months ago,

as a Skoda Approved Used, Dealer checking with Warranty people

Fingers crossed.

Hopefully you'll get a replacement then.

Spoken to dealer today, still chasing warranty people, so fingers still crossed.

The next big question is; will the replacement be more durable, or was it just a duff batch?

Is this a huge issue across many manufacturers at the moment or have just VAG been penny pinching.
