PD140 turbo bearings have failed after 54k miles

Featured Replies

After just 54k miles , the Turbo has gone on my Octavia. It's been serviced according to the recommendations and hasn't been abused so to say I'm unimpressed is a huge understatement.

Fortunately it's still just under warranty , but that's awfully close to being a very large bill for me if it had held on for a couple of months longer.

I had to get the heap of tat recovered all the way from Dorset yesterday and it's now dumped outside a dealer who will be having a look at it on monday.

I know Skoda-Assist offer a courtesy car for 48 hours but I'm still going to be car less for a while.

Is it normal to do an oil change after a turbo failure as I'm concerned that bits of melted bearings will have found their way into the engine.

In some respects Alex it's a bit of a blessing, the 140 Turbo's are well known for failure so to get a new one at this stage is handy.

SWMBO's LEON is brand new and I'm expecting that to let go at some stage cause it just doesn't sound right.

As for the replacement car I would push the garage to loan you something especially as they may say the turbo is on back order.

I would hope they'd change the oil but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't so ask them.

They should flush the oil lines and change the oil IMO.

Is the PD 105 turbo any different? More/less fragile then?

It's due a service in about 3k miles , and I don't see the point in getting the oil changed now and again in 6 weeks , so what I'm planning is for them to do the service now and get it cheaper as the oil and filter change should be done as part of the warranty

This could be interesting.

I had the car recovered by the AA as I didn't have the phone number for Skoda assist with me.

The garage don't have a courtesy car available and have suggested I phone Skoda assist.

Skoda assist say that as I didn't get the car recovered by them they won't do a courtesy car and that the dealer will need to phone skoda to get a car authorised.....

Anyone else predicting problems?

I think they may well have their work cut out with you Alex.

What a shile of pite.

This has just explained to me once again why I don't want anything VAG group again. I wonder if there is an after market stronger turbo that would be suitable for the default map, eg gives the same boost.

Don't suppose you know who makes the PD140 turbo do you?

Actually I can fully understand the Skoda Assist situation as they are the RAC and as far as they are concerned they didn't attend a breakdown so they aren't bound to provide alternative transport.

Your only hope IMHO is to get a loaner from the dealers.

I'm getting a courtesy car from the dealer on monday which will do me just fine - I can ride my bike and nick the GF's car till then if needed.

I did tell skoda assist I'd quite happily go and reclaim it from the dealer , drive half a mile down the road and then phone them to say the turbo has failed if needed :D

oh dear, sorry to hear of your troubles mate. Makes worrying reading as I have just bought a PD140 myself. Hope you get it sorted quickly. Just thought, I suppose i could use your case to convince the wife that we do need the bigger turbo upgrade from the derv doctor to prevent this happening to us lol

Yup, Garrett.

Got to be worth a try :D

IIRC, the 170Ps turbo has the same bearing housing, just a different turbine and compressor wheel and VGT vane depth....

I'll get my anorak!

Might I suggest a slight change in wording ie

"Just thought, I suppose i could use your case to convince the wife that we do need the more reliable turbo upgrade from the derv doctor to prevent this happening to us"

Using the word "bigger" may arouse (well-justified) suspicions that you don't want, whereas "more reliable" shows your caring, nurturing side to advantage

Doesnt Ross have a PD140 Turbo for sale on ebay at the moment, how convenient for him :D

Well , that's a pleasant suprirse - Brooklyn Skoda who have my car phoned me up just before lunch and have given me a car that was awaiting preparation to go into their retail stock.

It's a 57 plate Ambiente 1.9TDI , so not quite as nice as mine but a huge step up from the usual courtesy car.

Top job from the ladies in the service department at Brooklyn to get me a loan car at such short notice

And it's just gone to ****.

The garage have phoned my up to say that the car they gave me doesn't have any tax on it and they want it back , but they have a nice citroen C2 they can give me instead......

So that's an hour and a half of my time I have to waste tomorrow!

Ahh great stuff!

Least you have something which is better than nothing

Clearly you've never driven a Citroen C2!

It's been serviced according to the recommendations

That's probably the problem. Many manufacturers are bringing their service intervals back down to 10-12.5k because of increased turbo deaths with 20k+ intervals.

Ford, Vauxhall, and Renault have all gone back to 10-12.5k intervals with their newest diesels.

And yes, they should be replacing oil and filters as matter of course.

Clearly you've never driven a Citroen C2!

That bad then lol

54k on a 2.0 PD turbo, doing well mate.

No! please don't tell me my 4x4 is going to self-destruct at some stage - I was hoping it would be as reliable as our old Fabia 1.9Tdi...

Tick Tock Tick Tock

We do a lot of them at work, didn't do as many whilst I was at Skoda though so you should be fine.
