Mysterious .tmp file

Featured Replies

Does anyone know anything about the file OM29.tmp located in the (XP) folder

C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Temp ?

It occupies 11 MB of the disk and Windows refuses to delete it saying that it's "used by another program" ?

No useful information found by googling.

Have you tried deleting it from safe mode?

Nope, but a good suggestion, cheers.

It's my sister who's got the file - don't think she ever has tried to start in safe mode. Maybe I can guide her through it on the phone, otherwise it will have to wait till I visit her next time.

No ideas on where it comes from?

what apps are running, and have you tried something like CCleaner to clear temp files?

out of interest, why so desparate to delete a temp file?

When Win refused to delete no other apps were running (except Win Explorer aka "My Computer")

Sis doesn't have CCleaner installed but an older, simpler and pretty reliable variant called EasyCleaner - it didn't work either

It started with a problem to create a CD (message: There isn't enough space... you could create more space by...)

We went looking for old temp files remaining, maybe from a previous CD project. Didn't find anything, but this one made me curious being unusually large for a .tmp (even if 11 MB of course shouldn't affect an otherwise modest CD project). I'm not that desperate, but useless files could just as well be deleted or else they just slow down virus scans, defrag and so on.

fair enough, you could maybe try running filemon and filtering out everything but this one file to see what app/process has locked it and go from there?

That seems to be a handy gadget indeed! Thanks for the tip!

You can also try Unlocker which in most cases will kill the background process.

Thanks, may also be worth a try.

BTW, when looking for Filemon I learned that for XP SP2 and later (e.g. Vista), there's a new tool available that does the same plus some more:

Process Monitor

You can also try Unlocker which in most cases will kill the background process.

that looks to be a potentially damn handy little util

Only been using it for probs 2 yrs  - but defo good.

+ Swedishskoda it will tell you what process does have a 'hold' on the temp file.

ProcessExplorer - (Filemon ProcessMon also by SysInternals) is excellent for seeing what is running and its path.

Autoruns is very good for tracing / disabling startup programs.
