Pulling off/moving in traffic difficulties.

Featured Replies

I have done a few searches on this and cant really find anything else, if there is, apologies in advane.

Although I find my vRS 170 a brilliant car I do have one slight issue, which is probably not a fault but just the way it is.

When moving along in slow traffic when I would normally use 2nd gear to just roll along with the flow I cant seem to do it in the Octy. I find that I either stall it or almost stall it and kangaroo the car when I recover.

In any other car I have had the car would quite easily cope with pulling off from a standstill in 2nd with very little revs (if any). In the Octy, I find this very hard. Say, i slow down for a speed hump while in 2nd its as if there isnt enough torque there to pull away.

It could just be me not been used to the floor hinged accelerator pedal or a lack of torque at low revs.

Any thoughts?

Steve

Just don't pull off in traffic then :)

Took me quite a while to get used to the floor hinged gas pedal as well.

open the door and push?

You need to drive a diesel differently, and the gearing on the 6 speed box is very different. Try the same thing using 1st gear and you should find it fine, its possible to pull away and drive without using any throttle at all in that gear even on an uphill incline.

open the door and push?

What if it is stuck closed :)

Cannot do the same in mine as it will jjjjjjjudder in 2nd (good old DMF:finger:)so always change down to 1st to pull away smooth.

And i agree the floor hinged throttle are **** very uncomfortable.

Don't listen to those smarty pants. I know exactly what you mean. Every diesel I've had has pulled like a dream from rest...until this one. On mine there seems to be a real dip in power after initial pull-away (almost as if you've taken your foot off the gas) which you have to push through. Most annoying.

I'm thinking about asking the squealer if they can find anything amiss, but I suspect I will get the usual 'They're all like that Sir'!

Mine seems to be fine to move off in second with little/no Throttle

Also, with regards to the Dodgy Throttle Pedal mentioned, mine (Pedal) was noted to be a bit "laggy" in response times when tested by a Skoda Techy t'other week, said an ECU Flash Update thingy could sort it out - may be worth enquiring about that if you are experiencing similar...

May not be relevant, but the 'cage mod' sorted low speed kangaroo-ing for my fabia, don't know whether it might apply to the Octy 2.

That and use 1st.

I know exactly what you mean. In my old Superb 1.9TDi (130), I was able to stay in 2nd at very low speeds, and then pull away with no juddering whatsoever.

In the vRS, I find that I have to drop down to 1st in these situations, otherwise the car stalls, or judders very badly. The main problem with this is that the overlap between 1st and 2nd is very small, so I find that the speed at which 2nd starts becoming a problem is still too fast for 1st.

I've gotten used to it over the year or so that I've had the car, but I can't help but feel that the Superb engine was more flexible at low speed.

Bagpuss.

Bluefin aided in reducing this problem and was certainly worth it through the other gears.

I can pull off in 2nd in mine. It will also move along in slow moving traffic in 2nd.

I can pull off in second providing I have enough revs, others diesels I have had can generally pull from idle in second.

Been driving diesels for 15 years and don't feel the vRS is any different in this respect than any of the others.

However I don't get any wheelspin either that other people complain about so either mine is set up differently or I drive totally differently from everyone else!!

don't get caught pulling off in traffic. I'm sure it's against the highway code :D

Post number 2 beat you to it!!

It's not just your Octavia, my Astra is a pain in traffic too - 1st is too low, so you end up going along at 3500rpm, 2nd it takes off and you end up clutching all the time. My old 5-speed Astra could pootle along in 2nd in traffic no bother, but this one won't. Plus this one if it thinks it's going to stall it'll slap on a load of gas, and then it takes off wheels spinning.

6-speeders on powerful high revving diesels really need a 1.5th gear.

To an extent I think that maybe I aint got my foot positioned right on the accelorator. In that my right foot seems to default to sitting with my top of my foot only half way up the pedal.

I think I just need more practice with the car me thinks. I drive a van 5 days a week then the vRS just a few hours at the weekend.

Got mine back with a Spanking new Gearbox - will trundle along from stationary in 2nd without kangarooing (practicing on the M25 this afternoon... :(), will do it faster with the slightest of throttle (obviously)

My mk1 octy hated 2nd gear at very low speeds, which mean reving too high in first.

My mk2 seems fine though. Both were bought new, and gears fully bedded in.

But the damn DMF don,t help on some cars. jjjjjjjjjjjudder.
