My VRS's Dead

Featured Replies

Well, it seems that my Fabia's given up the ghost, and left me in the lurch...

Bought the car in April 08, had it running fine since then, no problems or indication towards any problem.

Then as i was just leaving work yesterday, accelerating moderatly I heard a "pop" and all power went. Coasted to a stop and then it's a non starter. Still turning over but not much else. Almost had it turning over but it sounds like it's not getting enough air.

I've heard similar symptoms on this before, could it have been a turbo / air inlet or some hose that could have gone, so does anyone have any suggestions before i take it into skoda at much expense?

Edit:

I'd forgotten to originally say, but my car's on 05 plate registered in April 05, but i procured it from a non-skoda garage in April 08.

Sometimes the Turbo boost pipes come off on the vRS, this has happened to quite a few people I beleive

Could be the boost hose has popped off. Seems to be quite a common problem. (Edit - Beaten to it!!!!)

I'm sure one of the resident experts will soon be along to offer some advice.

I thought if the boost pipe was off then the car would run, but it would be way down on power anything over 2,000rpm?

In my (admittedly limited) experience if it doesn't start but turns over it's usually a fuel, air or spark plug (not in this case though!) problem.

One other thing I hadn't mentioned is that i visually inspected the engine, where everything seems to be connected where it should, however i noticed an oil residue around the oil filler cap so i open this (after i'd tried starting the car) and found fumes to be coming out of it? Don't know if that helps.

Whereabouts in Cardiff are you as I may (wife just had baby, so a bit busy) be able to scan it for you, to see if theres any fault codes.

PM me with location if you want.

I could also do it if fatty5000 is unable to.

I could actually do it today if you want... but I am not here tomorrow.

Mine has a load of oil around the filler cap too, but as it's been there since I bought it and hasn't been guzzling oil I'm not too worried.

If the car's come up to temperature you will get a very small amount of what looks like smoke coming from the filler cap after you've run it.

better get it scanned mate asap - usually a boost tube leak will change it from a TDI to a DI and it'll start/run fine. although smoky and far less power.

Hope it's not a messed up turbo mate....

Keep my fingers crossed for you - let us know what happens

If it's an 08 it's under new car warranty so don't mess it around, just get skoda assist to take it to ta dealer and provide you with a car for 2 days.

I agree, as its an 08 car, give Skoda Assist a bell and don't mess about. :)

Wot he said:thumbup: (that's what I get for not noticing this is the new Fabia section - Doh!)

he said it was an '05 car but he bought it in 08....

my guess would be boost pipe if it was a pop... hope it isn't the turbo... commiserations if it is....

Also to add its an 05 , read the post's lol.

Doesnt sound good but get a scan done off these guys and cry afterwards

big thanks to joel, he's checked my car with the vag-com. There's a lot of information but i'll only post what looks important:

18263 powertrain databus: software version monitoring p1855-35-10----intermittent readyness

01598 - drive battery voltage 07-10 signal too low - intermittent.

Does this give anyone any idea's?

battery voltage will be low because you have been cranking the engine to try and start it

How old is the battery?

If it's 4 years old or over replace it, otherwise top up the cells with deionised water and stick it on charge over night.

See what happens then.

Also the edit was done after my post, so I didn't know it was an 05 plate. Boost pipe is an options.

To be fair I think I'd charge the battery and check the hoses are on then give it a try. If that doesn't fix it I'd have it into a dealer to diagnose and point out that they will not necessarily get the work so they don't over diagnose.

A low battery can cause all sort of hell with the electronics in modern cars.

Sounds like it's related to pipework/intercooler/turbo to me. Even if you've visually inspected pipe connections at the top of the engine, it could have popped at the connection from the side-mounted intercooler, for example, down in front of the front offside wheel. I'd take the engine undertray off and have a look in that area too.

Had a mechanic out to my car today to take a look at it. The code that i posted above came up on his other diagnostic device, but didn't appear under the Skoda Manufactured vehicles.

Found it under Audi eventually and it was something to do with a TCS/ASM problem, however the mechanic didn't think that this had anything to do with the car not starting.

He started by fiddling with a valve at the top of the engine near the turbo but nothing happened. Then he disconnected the pipe going/coming from the turbo, tried it again and it started! Noisy as hell mind. He checked the pipes leading to and from the Intercooler, all were ok, but found oil coming out of the intercooler / turbo pipe. He seemed to think that the problem then was either the turbo or the CAT was blocked, but had no idea why a car of this milage this may have happened (27k miles)

but found oil coming out of the intercooler / turbo pipe. ()

in which area is this oil leaking from ?

If it ran with the pipe off then its defo a blockage in the turbo or intercooler.

The cat may also be blocked and its not using the boost pipes as an exhaust

Does it blow hot gass out of the disconnect pipe when its running?

Does it blow hot gass out of the disconnect pipe when its running?

The mechanic checked that and found it was. He thought that it could still be the turbo or CAT, and ruled out the intercooler.

He'd taken it in today and on closer inspection found that the turbo had a bit of play in it, found it to be a little odd. He'd said that it looks as though someone had either taken the turbo off before i had the car or it had been messed with.

He took off the turbo and found the turbine blades smashed to pieces, so it looks as though it deffo needs a new turbo.

Anyone got a parts specialist? :(

Good excuse for a bigger turbo mate.....

absolutely.

If you need a fairly newish OEM one, my cousin from Wales is going to leave here to Caerphilly within a few days. (I happen to be Welsh-born myself, btw :))

I have my OEM that I want to sell on - done about 25K km - was working fine when replaced with an upgraded unit. Can hand it over to my coz to bring along, if you want to make me an offer.

Genuinely sorry to hear that it was the turbo - hope that the car didn't have excessive boost mapped in the ECU otherwise an OEM replacement won't last too long either....
