Skoda Dealer - Refurbishing Alloys

Featured Replies

My Skoda dealer quoted £50 each to refurbish my standard VRS alloys.

has anyone actually had theres done at a Skoda dealer? If so what was the work like? Did the match the colour back to the same as the original? Did it have the gloss shine the originals have?

Thanks,

I would guess they are almost certainly acting as middleman - and sub-contracting the work out to a local specialist.

On the one hand they will be adding a mark-up, but on the other they may get "trade" prices which will be less than what you would get direct anyway.

In terms of the quality of the job, I don't think comparing with others will help much as each dealer probably uses a different local specialist.

£50 a corner is a bit high but not ridiculous - I started a thread a week or two ago to ask a similar question, and people seemed to be paying £150 upwards.

Of course, you need to know whether quoted prices include tyre removal / refitting, as that can make a big difference.

Thanks Andy,

I did suspect they might be contracting it to someone.

I didn't think £50 was bad as other quotes were coming in at £60. However as you say I need to make sure they remove the tyre and put it back etc.

£50 isn't bad.

Round me its £60 powdercoated

£50 is not a rip off but niether is it a bargain.

It is DEAD on the average price.

for the standard 16" VRS wheels I was £35 each locally. So i'd shop around your local powder coaters. My local one calls the standard finish sparkle silver (silver with a metal flake)

18" is £45.

35 a wheel is the norm

Is the car still under warranty?

If so get them to replace them (if damage not through kerbing etc).

Two of mine were bubbling, Skoda UK replaced all four....lovely.

It is under warranty but I bought it 2nd hand and the damage is from kerbing :(

I have repaired it my self and resprayed + lacquered but the colour isn't the same even though I used the Wurth stuff.

I'm keeping my eyes peeled on eBay for a replacement original alloy too.

A mate of mine got his done and the place charge £1/inch, so 16" wheels are £16. Let me know if you want details, haven't got time to search right now.

Most dealers use a mobile service. They dont normally take a tyre off, just deflate, break the bead and push the tre away from the edge of the wheel and mask up.

I'd say £45-£50 per wheel is average in the dealer network from where I have worked before now.

£1/inch of wheel, + half again for lacquered (eg. 16" = £16 + £8 lacquered = £24 total).

Looks a great job, nicely done.

Shame West Yorkshire is a long away from me as the prices are really good too.

Got a 2nd hand Octy 1.9 TDI from the dealers (Mitchell Skoda)2 months ago. Didn't notice until I got it home that front passenger side alloy was damaged ? kerbed.

Have been back to the dealer a couple of times since for some minor niggles but didn't mention the alloy as thought it wouldn't be covered under warranty but d'you think it's worth seeing if they'll do it under warranty?

Local quote of £45 for repair from Chipsaway.

Many thanks for your suggestions/thoughts.

When mine needed doin i found prices varried from £35 to £50 a wheel.

I found it quite hard to find someone to do mine tho as most places didnt have the Anthracite colour. I found a local bodyshop to do them for £40 each, cash price;)

Any Bodyshop can do them as well so dont rule them out & remember, cash is king at the moment ;)

Honest tip

Dont use your local dealer unless yor car is under warranty as they charge top wack, and half of the work thats supposed to be done by them gets sub contracted out to other garages. :thumbdwn:

Exactly what happens in accident repairs in most cases ;)

You will be able to get all four of your wheels refurbed for £100 ish just ask around to see whos good in your area though.

Folks,

I know this thread as been inactive for a while, but I used a place in Castleford recently to repair some horrendious kerb damage. The mrs was responsible for the damage of course *cough*.

£45 for powder coating along with tyre removal, fitment and balancing.

I only had one wheel done and while t isn't an exact colour match it is a really good finish.
