120mph by accident

Featured Replies

This story is fiction.

I was driving (I don't think any cameras, M42/A42) doing 78mph or so I thought, maybe 80. Not going silly. Clear road, in the outside lane, going faster, checked still about 80.

Long story short I started passing everyone rather fast, thought maybe they were slowing down - but it did seem like I was going fast, very fast.

I eventually established when I noticed the tacho over 5,000rpm that I was sitting near 120 mph, the speedo said 80 still. Up to 75 it's fine, then it wavers a bit and maxes out at 80. If I do cruise at that speed it's all jerky too, like the speed sensor is faulty. I did have a gearbox speed sensor fault and cruise wouldn't work at all, all over the shop jerky even at 30, but put a new one in and the fault cleared, cruise perfect, never came back. TILL NOW - till I did over 80.

Haven't had chance to scan it yet, maybe this weekend.

Annoying though as I woudn't have knowingly risked a ban and genuinely the speedo still said 80!

Any comments?

I didn't do it for long as I pretty soon worked out I was going way fast, eg 50mph over the max speed limit.....

Incidentally the car wasn't flat out and felt like it would run to 6.5k red line happily so I think it would do 130, maybe 140.

Greg.

hmmm not good but i wouldnt risk driving the car until its all checked and get it checked asap with all faults logged by someone for some level of prooof as if this was on M42 i wouldnt want to be expecting to keep my licence long. maybe popping on piston heads legal and policey forum and asking a few questions so your prepared just incase.

Sorry, but I cannot believe that anyone would not know the difference when driving at 80mph and 120mph.

As your profile states your a "PRO MECHANIC", perhaps you should get someone else to look at the car???

I don't really understand what you are saying, but it didn't seem very friendly.

I did say that I pretty soon figured out I WAS going too fast. I slowed down. This was a very short distance.

Also this is the first time it happend and I haven't had 2 mins to look at the issue and get my diagnostic gear on it. I'm not sure what part of that makes me a bad mechanic?

It was just after the M, on the A42 - 2 lanes dead clear, normally people do 90/100 down there and I have never seen any cameras. Plus it was a very small stretch so I'm hoping all will be okay.

As you can see by my stressing I'm not given to driving like MD in a company car!

Its not meant as a jibe at you personally, but I cannot see the point of the thread in the first place.

You state that you were going fast, very fast, and passing everyone, and this should have been the sign to back off straight away, and to repeat, I cannot honestly believe that anyone who classes themselves as a reasonable, responsible driver would not know the difference between 80mph and 120mph, and surely a pro mechanic who has to drive customers cars would notice faults such as these?

As for not having 2 mins to get the Vag-Com on it, perhaps you could have done it this morning instead of posting this thread?.................LOL

Sorry, cannot give you a wink smiley as they are not working for some reason or another, just getting a red cross.

I can't totally agree with this. "Passing everyone" just shows that they're going sloer than you are! I've had several instances of "passing everyone" where I was doing the posted speed limit +/- half the width of the needle! ;)

It's fixable; To make the missing smilies or whatever display normally, press CTRL+F5 in a thread that's got one you're missing in it. The one above will turn into a winkie if you do this.

And this seems like a good place to fix finger, so don't be offended by my doing it. :finger:

I did notice, I backed off. I realised that something wasn't adding up. I did realise that I was no longer doing 80mph. I do understand what happened, which is why it was for a short distance, but thakyou for pointing out that I should, and did indeed, realise I was going fast.

The point of the thread was me wanting a chat, it's a forum after all, not a technical q&a solely, this has a technical side too which I will post the resolution in due course.

As for putting vag com on it right now, the car isn't in my yard. There is no rust to do so, I'm not driving it anywhere right now. I may well take it to someone else for a scan in case I need it as proof in court though, would look dodgy as previous poster suggested if I 'claim' there was a fault without a 3rd party involved.

As for the pro mechanic bit.... gimme a break! How am I supposed to 'know' about a fault which only happens over 80mph, the car has a clean fault scan, when I haven't driven the thing over 80mph since the other fault was fixed a few months ago? This was the FIRST TIME!!!! Next you'll expect me to know steering faults on cars I haven't bought yet....

Anyhow thanks for the replys, I'll post an updated in due course for those that wish to check back.

Have a great day,

Greg.

I think the words "Fast, Very Fast" and passing everyone on a motorway does give a slight clue to why I questioned it?

If it was just for a chat then surely the Octavia 1 is the wrong section to post it in.

Ken, as for the finger, hardly appropriate from you, as you were not even involved, and I have never even posted anything to you that might even offend you in any way. Post reported.

Did you actually bother to read the second and third paragraphs of my message properly? If you had done so, you'd have seen that I told you how to fix a computer display problem you said you had, and then went on to say that I was fixing the same problem for myself, and to not take it personally.

There are numerous other smileys you could have chosen to use that would not have caused offence.

End of.

This story is fiction.

So is most of the fabia section ;)

The value of this post is what exactly?

Lots of toys on the floor near some Skoda prams I think. However I do agree that you should be able to tell the diff. between 80 and 120 as it takes a noticeable time to get to 120. The only time I feel the need to look at speedo is when going past camera's proving yet again how they improve safety!

personally i belive if you couldn't tell the difference between 80 and 100mph let alone 80 to 120 then you deserve whats coming, sorry to sound a bit harsh, but there is no way you wouldnt be able to tell the difference full stop, even at 90 mph there aint going to be many people travelling at that sort of speed on the m42,

for your sake i hope you dont get done, but i think any credibile court would nail you to the wall

sorry dude

:(

so is this story fiction or fact or are we wasting our time replying lol ?????

None, but it's about as valuable as the one above mine too ;)

I have to agree with this statement.

Okay, prams yes. I'm a bit sorry I even posted, or am a member, or ever speak, hell I'm a bit sorry I'm alive

The 'this story is fiction' bit, I read that one should never put in print an action that was against the law, just in case. Only hypothetical or fictional stories. So make of that what you will.

Now, for once and for all I REALISED I WAS GOING TOO FAST.

I have NOT been driving around at 120 for several years going 'I had no idea how fast I was going'.

I did realise!!! I slowed down!!! You DONT need a long distance to get from 80 to 120 in a 1.8T down a bit of a hill! I did a couple of double takes at the speedo which was telling me I was doing 80 at it didn't ring right, looked at the tacho, checked I was in D not 3 and realised what was going on. In about the space of time it took you to read that. Please people don't keep telling me of for not being able to tell I was going too fast, the whole point of this story was that I DID REALISE, quickly, and frightened myself when I worked out how fast I may have been going!

If anyone knows this for a fact, what is just above 5k rpm in a 1.8T auto in top gear? I estimated it at 120 but as it seems I'm only getting accurate speed a LOT lower maybe it was 110. It can't be 130, there is no way it would have drifted up to that speed that quick, and I would have backed off long before that speed I'm sure, as it was it must have been seconds, not minutes, that I held a high speed.

Anyhow I don't know what more I can say, thanks for the comments and thanks re the helpful suggestions. Please don't anyone feel they have to post more if it will be flamey, I don't want to end up being responsible for starting a thread that gets someone into trouble.

There are a few serious points, it's a cautionary tale, particularly if you feel you are going a bit fast but your speedo says you are not - it may be this issue. From a technical point, when I get to it I'll post it and who knows in the future someone may search this out and it will help them.

Take care y'all,

Greg.

I know what you mean and im not trying to have a pop, but to accelerate from 80 to 120ish is quick but you would need to have your right foot planted pretty much to the floor, i know because i have done (on a private track with insurance i may add) ;)

personally i rarely go above 75 anymore because i just cant afford to have no licence and with my cruise control it makes that job so much easier.

Sounds like someone's having a bad day.

Any car with more than around 150hp is actually quite difficult to keep near the speed limit. I got cruise control fitted to mine, for exactly the same problem - I spent more time concentrating on keeping the car below 80 on the clock than I did on the traffic, and that's before the remap.

Maybe the folks swinging their epeen about towards greg should try and drive a fast vehicle on a motorway and they'll discover it genuinely is difficult to keep the speed reined back (especially considering 70mph is sub-2000rpm on most modern vehicles).

Have i missed something here but how would you know if you are doing 120mph if your speedo only says 80 ????????????

Perhaps as one of those people I should state that I do drive a modified Octy vRS, and, as such know the difference between 80mph and 120mph, also 70mph in fifth is above 2000rpm on an Octy vRS.

This has surely run its full term, and should be closed or moved to the chit chat area, where it can be flogged to death and beyond.

End of for me, and no I am not having a bad day.....LOL
