Want to improve car without affecting insurance

Featured Replies

Hi all

Ive had my furby vrs for 2 weeks, so far ive got number plate chrome surrounds, seat belt covers and done the 9mm egr gasket fit as my cars a 56 plate so i eliminated the problem with stuttering.

what i want to know is what else can i do that isnt going to look 'boy racerish' but will improve the cars looks, handling and speed.

Cars still under warranty for a year and im not going to change insurer for quite a while (they wont insure me for mods).

Any ideas on things that wont affect insurance etc?

technically anything you change from the standard set up will effect your insurance cos if you dont tell them and have an accident they will try and void your claim so basically the answer is very little...tint your windows is a good mod...gl

paint your grille, take the door strips off, debadge it. there are plenty of simple things you can do that wont be classed as a mod insurance-wise

instead of tuning the engine, make it immaculate by replacing standard parts and buying shiny bits. Did this with my polo and dispite no performance games, it was really pleased with the car.

My insurance co. will let me do anything to the car, as long as it doesnt increase power, acceleration or top speed...

So some 17"s have been ordered, some Eibachs on the way soon and some 312mm brakes to start :)

Why on earth would anyone want to replace engine components with shiney bits:confused:

Only you will know they are there, and perhaps the AA/RAC when they are called out:confused:

Unless you drive with the bonnet open:confused:

Maybe its me then:confused:

If you can't tune it, make it look pretty. For me, a car isn't a mode of transport it's a hobby so making it look better/go better is important. And plenty of people see the engine bays at the shows.

Improve your driving? :)

Some sort of advanced driver training? IAM/RoSPA

Nothing wrong with the way it looks. It has an understated beauty in standard form. Just leave it alone and enjoy your car.

correct me if i'm wrong but different sized wheels alter acceleration and top speed

Well, i phoned them up and queried it, and they said as it doesnt affect it etc, it wouldnt matter

the only time they will change the characteristics of the car is if they are not matched to the correct tyres size - you need to keep the outer circumference of the tyre the same as standard - smaller means less top speed but faster accelleration, bigger means higher top end but lower accelleration.

BUT BOTH WILL GIVE AN INCORRECT SPEEDO READING SO YOU WONT GET A TRUE INDICATION ANYWAY.

Most tyre websites have a size converter features to allow you to check this within aceptable limits.

Absolutely agree on your point about chucking shiny bits in if you show it, other than that I just dont see the point myself. Each to his own I s'pose, although I'd rather spend money on tarting up the bits people CAN see.

Im is silver, Got 20% dark tints! LCR Splitter and having the wheels powered coated! All make a hell of a difference!

Fold the back seats down? :D

(It's a long story...)

De badge or re badge

philips, silver vision indicator bulbs

Expensive and a lot of people dont like it

S3 wing mirrors

1st time ive heard of this! Will investgate.

Get insured with Brentacre. They will let me put on coilovers, big brakes, alloys, Cupra splitter , bodykit etc.

as already mentioned above, try an advance driving organisation like rospa or IAM, this will teach you a lot and help you use your forward planning to a better potential.

Keep it clean, treat it with some decent polish products, decent wheel wax, screen polish (the stuff that rain runs off from), tyre balck etc..... bobs your uncle, better looking than 90% of other cars on the road.

As for changing components in the engine bay, seems pretty pointless to me unless you go to shows and show your car off or unless you hang about the streets showing your car off

Nope, because you decrease the aspect ratio of the tyres by the corresponding amount so that there is little or no difference in the overall rolling diameter.

Technically you also replace the wheel with a different sized, and likely weight one, either increasing/decreasing unsprung weight which can make a big difference to the cars acceleration and/or top speed. :D

Just like taking the back seats out isn't a 'mod' but would still increase the cars acceleration and top speed.

I've always wondered that, but then if large wheels / narrow tyres have performance advantages beyond allowing a larger brake disc to be fitted to a car where the wheel diameter is limited by an arch, then why do F1 cars have such high profile tyres and (comparatively) little rims? And why have I been told more than once that a vRS wheel is heavier than a standard Fabia steelie?

I guess that low profile tyres have less sidewall flex (not an issue if you have a thicker sidewall tyre as I expect F1 cars to be?) but a higher profile tyre means less metal of the actual wheel (metal being heavier than rubber means less unsprung weight).

I believe a steel wheel is lighter than an alloy, but there's less ventilation for the discs, doesn't look as good and might be a durability/strength difference too I guess? Excluding the rust issues too. Alloy comes out tops - plus a good lightweight allow wheel like an ultraleggera will be lighter than the equivalent steelie.

Then again; most of that is made up in my head using my own special logic, so usual disclaimer applies: It's probably all wrong.

Why stop there!? Fill the back with some helium baloons!
