Octy vRS - Gradual throttle or foot hard down?

Featured Replies

Was cruising along yesterday about 50 when I needed to pull out and gain speed quickly. Dropped to third and planted my foot to the floor (I know I'm not supposed to for another 800 miles, but I needed to :) ). To my suprise, the car didn't seem to take off as I expected it too. When I have been driving the car round easy and just giving a bit of throttle, I can really feel the turbo kick, but when I tried this manouver, it didn't seem to go as planned.

Did a quick search, and one thread seems to suggest that it is better to add power smoothly than plant your foot into the floor, as you get much better acceleration...is this true?

Cheers

Depends on speed and engine speed before the downshift. The gearing on the octy is very long, so I find myself using 2nd and 3rd round town and very rarely using 4th and not 5th at all, till out of town. 2nd is good for around 70mph, and 3rd well past 100. Keep the revs around 4k and she will fly when you floor it in any gear. Once run in, dont be afraid of the revs the limiter is at 7k rpm and I hit it all the time.

Chances are I was in too high a gear then for 50mph, and should ideally have dropped to second (though not 'til it's ran in of course) for a good turn of speed.

Quick question mannyo. Have posted this in general, but will ask again here. Is it normal to get used to the speed and acceleration after 3 days. The alarm people had the car most of today, but when driving it home, the turbo didn't feel as lively as before. Just getting used to the speed do you think, or maybe adapting driving style?

I think you answered your own question, Ventmore, since foot hard down didn't get you the result you expected.

You do get used to it very quickly, its only when you see other cars vanishing from the rear view mirror, you realise it still is quick.

Was really checking to see if this is what should happen, or whether I had a problem.

I think we can rule out your alarm fitters for the theft of your bhp

As mannyo says you do get used to it but it will still put a big grin on your face just when you need it to. It'll take you by suprise occasionally too :D

However, I would point out that if after only 3 days you're posting like this well... your journey down the slippery slope will be brutal

Thanks for the replies guys.

Yeah, soon I'll have a mod list as long as my list of vRS questions. :)

Can't wait to get through the next 800 miles and really start to play :D:D

Manny's above quote is on the button.

I recall how my head would snap back when accelerating from a stand still when I first had the car, now other than the general shove into the seat, acceleration doesn't feel fast to me anymore. But when you leave other cars behind you know......

My favourites are: giving 2nd gear some welly once your over 4K rpm, particularly if you've only been gently increasing in speed up to this point, and

5th gear acceleration on motorways etc, when already doing 70+ mph, no need to change down a ratio, just ease the peddle down a bit more and away we go!!!!

Lee

i'll agree with the above...

i've had mine for 6 months now and although i am used to the speed of the car occasionally i'll accelerate harder than normal and the car will still surprise me.

my fav is 5th at 80 on the "test track", give the throttle a prod down about an inch or 2 and wait for a second, the front lifts slightly and your doing a ton in what seems like a few seconds... brilliant !

You do get used to it...It's only when as others have said you overtake, maybe after the 8th (lowered to protect the guilty) car that is still trying to decide if they can get out and back, you have :D

After a few weeks/days depending on how much you drive you should have the measure of where it's power is. I still use the wrong gear at the wrong time but thats me.

I have found a slighlty lower level of pressure yields better results, that is not full throttle, then agian very few times one need to use FULL, except maybe first round town.

I'm slighlty addicted to white line tugging and torque steer at the moment when overtaking...do the brakes and you can overtake there aswell if you're really in a rush...ooops guess thats not that clever really...but it's lower speeds...confused.

Over 2 years and I still find it fast.

Although having been riding to work 3 days a week getting into a vehicle which "moves itself!" is amazing.

:)

After 12 months of ownership mine feels very slow now. So I booked it into jabba on the 26th of july

I want to book mine into a GT28 but c'est la vie the man from del egg he say no.

Foot Hard Down!

im begining to fine mine slower now but ive got jabba on the 23rd of this month! :))

My Octy vRS is definately quicker when you press the accelerator only and inch or so. Flooring it seems rather dissapointing by comparison. In fact when I'm coming to the end of a short dual carriageway near where I live (with foot to the floor) in 4th and back off the throttle, I get a push in the back as the throttle is released! Don't know if this is normal?

had mine just about a month now...and it doesnt seem as fast as when i first had it but i was driving a 1.2 punto :D and i have to remind myself your doing 60 already ease back of the throttle and engage 5th LOL then i thikn dam it is quick! 60 already and i wasnt thrashing it

I get exactly the same, thought it was just me...

might be because if your almost into the rev limiter in 4th or whatever your past the peak power and torque for that gear, so when you come back down the revs (with the trottle still open) the car comes back into those peak areas for a second and that why you feel a surge...

might be wrong but it made sense to me when i thought about it.

suppose it would only work if you were actually still throttling albeit not fully.
