Well it look's like I've been bitten the project bug....

Waiting for the new car(A3 2.0TDi DSG S-Line) which is now not going to be here untill late Oct/Nov :thumbdwn:

Was looking through some mags at work the other lunchtime(NO not THAT sort :P ) and found myself fancying a Audi quattro -- the original -- the daddy UR quattro Turbo.

Will need to be a fairly cheap one - so will need work - that doesnt bother me for obvious reasons, I had no idea how hard it was going to be to find one though -- tried a search on Autotrader - which revealed 8 in total 1 of which had been on the VCAR register - but apparently repaired ny a "well known" quattro specialist - the others were just either too much or just too much for what they were.

Even AM Cars that are one of the best well known only have two -- 1 of which is a pre-production model '83 going for.......

For quattro read Quattro. Jeez, what a car. For 5k I wish you luck and if you do get one... can I have a go? :D

This won't make you feel any better but there is one in Sheffield with a big 'Not for sale' sign on it that is absolutely mint, silver and about 20k miles if I recall. Apparently the guy just wheels it out a couple of times a year and just keeps it taxed and tested. What a waste!

Sorry to correct you -- but the original and best quattro - uses the lower case q to denote it as the superior - should also have put Ur in front so Ur quattro it is.

I wasn't trying to be clever. I don't think I'd get in an argument about Audis with someone who works for errr... Audi :D

So this Ur thing, is that the short wheelbase one or is that something else entirely?

Short sports were something different again being quite a hybrid of parts.

Ur quattros are a rare find in good nick. We had a customer while I worked at Wayside Audi in Milton Keynes that had a red one, over the three year period I was there he'd spent

Right.. My favorite car .....

The Ur-quattro... Basically is a very old car now.. I rebuilt a C plate 90 quattro,, which is basically the same car without the turbo...

The Ur-q cars come in 5 distinct steps..

The 1st version came with 4 head lights, 6x15inch alloys and a analogue dash.. Either expensive scrap yard junk or equally expensive restored

classic... the engine was the 2144cc 10V 5cyl turbo = big lag and narrowish power band..the transmission was

4x4 with a normal centre diff, both centre and rear diffs could be locked. Power was 200bhp,

the gearing was an issue with a massive gap between 2 -3 causing the engine to bog down out of the turbo zone..

the 2nd approx A plate .. the headlights were changed to the cibie single units with dual reflectors.. still ran on the 6x15inch alloys.. it also came with the later style dash and the digital dashboard... the gearing was altered, and changes to the rear suspension prevented the early versions bad oversteering problem.. ABS was also introduced..

the 3rd was the first of the revised look Ur-q, with the first version of the digital dash, the car took on the look of the sloping grill and lights, 8x 15inch alloys were fitted, this finaly filled the wide arches... The interior trim also changed... The engine and transmission stayed the same..

Around 1988 ( E plate ) the engine was replaced with the 2226cc 5cyl engine, this reduced the turbo lag and also gave the car more driveablilty..

the big transmission changes was the introduction of the Torsen diff..

this gave a 75/25 to 25/75 variable traction front and rear, the rear diff could still be locked

Power remained at 200bhp but torque was improved and peaked lower down the rev range

Audi was then going to cancel the quattro, but due to protests from around Europe ( mainly the UK ) Audi gave in and continued developing the car..

The last and best version is the Ur-quattro 20V, the 2226cc engine came with a 20v cyl head ( prev seen on the quattro-sport ), this completely changed the cars driveability, power was up to 220bhp, Torque was increased and the peak was at 1900rpm, cats were fitted for the 1st time, the brakes and interior were changed, the digital dash was redesigned...

The last Ur-quattro 20V a Titan Grey J plate was given away by Audi in a competition, to my mate who at the time could not afford to run such a car,,

so sold it on through AM cars...

So to the important part... I would personally look for a E plate or newer version.. Unless the car you buy has been totally restored then you need to check the following,, for the 10V engine,, the common issue is cracked exhaust manifold, usually there is an attempt to cure this by welding it, but it causes futher problems due to stresses in the casting...

The engine, gearbox and diffs generally are bomb proof ( my 90 quattro was still ok on the original clutch, bottom end, and transmission after 260K miles )

the 10V engine suffers from valve guide wear.. so may need an overhaul..

TSR sells pack A or C -- Gas flowed and big valved heads...

Also make sure the cambelt has been replaced, if not then it is a relatively cheap and easier job..

Suspension will need attention unless it has been replaced recently,, quattros

are hard on there front suspension, wishbone bushes are cheap enough but are a pig to fit, track rod ends can seize up.. lower ball joints also can wear quickly...

The rear suspension is actually more meatier than the front.. again track rod adjusters rust so you cannot adjust.. lower ball joints also wear..

All suspension parts are cheaply available from companies like Euro Car Parts

and German and Sweddish..

Suspension kits are available from Spax, Koni etc etc...

Head lights will also need attention as the Cibie units suffered from reflector

corosion.. some people re-spray them but this does not work.. new units are around 80-100 quid..

Interior trim is hard wearing etc... door handles are a weak point but replacements are cheap..

Exhausts can be cheap from ECP- G&S or go and get a stainless steel version made which will last longer than the car....

Bodywork should not have any major corrosion yet,, if there is then it will be neglect or accident damage that has not been repaired correctly..

Ross. I know the S2 probably makes more sense - but there is one problem - I really really really don't like that shape coupe!.

Probably to do with my own customer from hell - he really was a nightmare, nothing we ever did was good enough for him. He was so untrusting - he would wait while we did any work -and then accompany the technician on road test!!

Mind you his car was immaculate - if it rained on the day the car was booked in - he would not bring it - the car only went out in the dry, and without fail was washed and leathered after EVERY journey - even if that journey was the less than 1/4 mile to the garage!! - his car was a D plate quattro coupe(non turbo)

But then one day he came in wanting an S2 - it just so happened we had taken delivery of an ex-Audi S2 that very morning - so he buy's it, a week later we get our usual copy of Autocar -- there in all it's glory is the said S2 on the front cover - great you might think - but at the time of the photo it was all four wheels in the air approx 3ft off the ground having just launched from a hump bridge.

The sales manager nearly had heart failure when he saw it - he new Our customer would be back!! - sure enough next day in he comes - with the said autocar under his arm - - Oh B@ll@cks!! - first he walks straight to me and says " Hey look at this thats my car !! Bloody great in it?"

We could not believe it the guy was actually chuffed his car was on the front cover - never mind it was airborne at the time - "I'll never drive it like that,but it's good to know it will survive!" --- Customers, can't live with them,can't live without them!

Cheers for that Dazz - Am aware of the various models and there traits.

Have been fortunate enough to drive every one except the very early types - but the best was indeed the Short wheelbase sport quattro - but even now they are well out of the question - parts are so scarce and bloody expensive.

We did a headgasket on a sport - it should have new head bolts - but the owner decided it would be fine- as he did not want to pay the extra - I forget the exact price but it was in excess of a

I have been fortunate enough to have been a passenger in a 720BHP Quattro Sport S1 Pikes Peak replica... A guy called Tom Hammond owns it..

( he also used to own a green Sport, which he used to tow the S1 about.. )

I knew a guy who knew Tom through hillclimbs... I asked if I could have a ride one time,,

It was almost painfull the violence of the acceleration... and the noise...

woosh pop stutter woosh.... Tom did not have a PDK -- read semi auto..

That Audi Sport used in the rally cars.. So his 0-60 time was hampered by this even so.. low 3 secs is slightly quick.....
