Fabia Vrs MFD Head Unit

Featured Replies

I know there are loads of threads on MFD head units on here but I'm looking for a few pointers.

  1. Does the standard Skoda/VAG one come with Sat Nav etc?
  2. Where can you get one from for a reasonable price?
  3. How hard are they to fit?

The MFD is a Sat NAV.

eBay is a good source, Skoda ones are harder to find.

Not too bad, you'll need to get what's called a Plug and Play Loom but they are normally supplied with them.

Cool, its sat nav im after. Was thinking of getting a tom tom or something but thought I may as well spend a bit more and get proper integrated unit. Are they basically just a big screen with sat nav, radio and CD. Do they play DVDs and are they normally touch screen?

No such luxuries I'm afraid. Very old technology.

Do you reckon its a bit of a waste of tiem then?

It depends on what you want. It is a good unit but doesn't offer the functions of the likes of TomTom etc.

Well I was looking for a sat nav to start with and maybe a new head unit so thought why not look for a combined one. But seeing as the MFD dont have ability to play CDs then its a none starter. Maybe it worth getting a 3rd party unit with dvd/touch screen/bluethooth etc... not sure though Wanted to try keep it all OEM you know,

Been a while but i am picking this up again. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I should get?

You can get the Witson Sat-Nav unit in the double-din format, for the older model Passat, but it's coloured red rather than green, and depending on how fussy you are, you might not like it. I didn't and I bought a genuine MFD which isn't as feature rich, but it does the job fine.

Looks quite nice. I assume it will fit the fabia vrs fine? What do you think about the cost? Any thoughts on other options?

There's an MFD setup currently for sale in the Classified section.

It's a double-din Chinese made kitchen-sink of a thing. It'll fit a fabia fine, but the red colour will be wrong for the rest of the dashboard and depending on your ears, it doesn't sound so good. In 12 months time you'll get no support and however cheap it is, you'll be swearing at it.

Personally, I'd go for a straight aftermarket head unit and a Tomtom or a genuine Skoda MFD DX unit with the CD changer or Phatbox MP3 under the front seat which looks right because it's meant to fit in there and although it doesn't have every possible function known to man, it sounds good and the Sat Nav is quite quick and very accurate.

The main issue with a Tomtom is the sucker on the dashboard and, if you use it every day, getting it on and off the windscreen soon becomes a right PITA.

As Wardy says in his previous post there is a late model MFD with a Phatbox (Kenwood Music Keg) for sale on here at the moment. For teh money the guy is asking, that's what I'd buy.

Just fitted a Pioneer Avic D3 in mine, touch screen nav, dvd unit with bluetooth. Is one of the best units i've ever had. Excellent picture, sat nat and sound quality is far bette than my old top of the range Alpine unit. This unit is uncomparable to the arc that is the Skoda MFD

Alex

That looks a lovely bit of kit Alex

Just been having a look at the detail and specs; tempting! :rubchin: - how does it handle the security side? Is there a removable panel or anything?

The only difference is that its not touch screen though isnt it?

Avic D3 is touch screen, security wise, it bolts in with 8 bolts and has no removeable panels but looks to be part of the dash, so cant see anyone trying to get it out any more than a standard MFD

How much did you pay for it?

Do you not think that the MFD gear for sale is worth it?

Thanks Alex. Have you got an iPod hooked upto it? Just wondering how speed and navigation is...

Cheers,

Steve

Come on then guys, is the MFD setup worth it or not?

(no watching this speednut! :D)

Look at the current prices of MFD's on eBay and make your own mind up.

  • Author

Sorry I meant worth it in terms of the MFD setup or a third party one like ninja alex and wja96 were talking about further up. Which do people think is better?

I know that the price is a good deal (i think!)

If you bought the MFD from speednut you'd either need to give up on CD's or buy a CD changer (not cheap). But the Pioneer Avic D3 is £500+ and you can forget about ever parking in Liverpool if you fit one of those:D

You really do need to see if you can live with the clunkiness of the MFD before you make you mind up. Where are you located - maybe a local MFD owner could give you a demo?

Oh does the MFD not play CDs then? A noob question I know but I thought it did? Also what would you describe 'clunkiness' as being?

No, it doesn't play CDs - the CD slot is only for the navigation disc. To play CDs you need the optional changer unit which fits under the front pasenger seat.

The clunkiness is about how it's programmed - you spin and press a knob rather than touch the screen. It only has basic postcode lookup and you can't add POI databases without some serious hacking skills (although it is possible).

As VRStu said earlier, it's a 20th Century satnav and compared to a Tomtom it looks very basic indeed.
