Definitive Answer on Cruise Control

Featured Replies

Have you sorted your cruise control out yet?

Fitted it to mine last night and the worse thing that happened is that my friend managed to knacker up my drivers windscreen wiper. All this hoo-ha about what a nasty job it is. It's just time consuming. Personally, I enjoyed doing it. Follow the advice in the links listed before by Chris and Foxy for the CC fit and you won't go wrong.

The parts you need are:

Stalk - 1J0 953 513 01C

Loom - 1J0 971 425

Additional loom which you have to make yourself or buy off someone.

You have to buy these from a VW dealer. They may tell you the parts don't exist but if you tell them to try ordering the parts anyway, they will find it. When I picked the parts up myself, they actually got the part number off me because they couldn't find it themselves.

If you don't want to buy the additional loom that isn't fitted to the ecu, just extend the loom you buy and be careful about getting the wire the right way round. Simple. Anyway, good luck with all this. Hope you're cruising along soon.

Super job... thanks very much for the information. I'll be doing it myself as soon as I get paid so I can order the parts... how much were they in total?

All done, and Pugs, you're right, it's dead easy, nothing to it.

If anyone's wanting to do it, just get the parts and go ahead. It's not hard, but it takes care.

Incidentally, if anyone in the North East wants to do it themselves and needs any help then I'm happy to assist.

Things to look out for that caused me headaches:

Extracting the god-awful little connector from the back of the fusebox. Paperclips, safety pins and other tiny pokey things were found to be useless compared to two very small watchmaker's screwdrivers in the end.

Removing the passenger side windscreen wiper. The reaction between the aluminium wiper arm and the steel splined shaft causes the buildup of annoying white powdery crap which literally chemically welds the two bits together. The driver's side wiper came off in my hand with no problems, but I had to use a puller in the end to get the passenger wiper off after trying everything else, including WD40, vinegar, PlusGas and other household chemicals.

 Pip the horn and the CD skips a track. No thanks :D

as the saying goes, 'yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice!'

Mind you, if can't even put a CD in the right way up then it's probably best not to attempt the cruise install yourself!!

To the more open minded on the forum, there is going to be a mk4 Golf group cruise control fitting session near Reading on Saturday 4th September. So if anyone wants to either 1) do the install on their own car, 2) see someone else do an install 3) get advice on a cruise install or 4) just wants to laugh at us, then please contact me for details or take a look at that well known Golf mk4 forum.

That's me out then :D

Really it's not about being open minded, it's about knowing one end of a screwdriver from the other. I am actually clinically cack-handed (look it up) and my head just spins thinking about attempting something like this.

No offense mate
