Definitive Answer on Cruise Control

Featured Replies

OK, I've been having all kinds of fun trying to find out the answer to this. The dealer doesn't know, or won't tell me. I've searched the forum but can't find a definitive answer. :(

Can anyone tell me what part numbers I need to purchase to retro-fit cruise control on my 2002 Octy vRS WRC?

Some posts I've read seem to suggest I just need the stalk, some say I need a stalk and a loom. Which is it? Help me.

You need a stalk, the five pin connector with terminals and you need to make up a loom.

And you also need 1551/1552/ VAG COM to enable cruise in the engine ECU.

Stalk & Loom IIRC

Or contact BigK, he'll supply & fit for

Well, I'm hoping to get a mate of mine to do it... He used to be the workshop manager for an Audi garage, now he's working for *spit* BMW.

Should at least be able to get the parts at cost from him, even if I can't find the time to take the car to Suffolk to see him :-)

Its not just having the parts though. You also need to know which pins to wire into on the engine ECU from the switch, also as mentioned you need VAG COM or similar and the login code to activate cruise.

He is correct.. when BigK did mine, he had to splice into the main ECU loom.. there was f**kloads of wires in it!!!! there would be no way id know which to go for

once you have bought required parts theres not much difference in cost to getting a BigK professional install, plus a lil bit goes to the running of this site. i thought about doing my car meself.. but im glad i didnt, seeing K at work

I appreciate everyone's concern :) but I'm unlikely to start 'doing it myself' unless I'm absolutely certain what I'm doing... That said, I'm not scared of the ECU, wiring looms or circuit diagrams as I have plenty of experience in that area... I've already got VAG-COM and have relatively easy access to VAG 1551 if necessary as well, but I'll have to see what happens when i get the parts.

I appreciate that it might well be easier to get K to do the job, but the nature of my work means that due to 24 hour on-call rotas I get very little time to go dashing off around the country to get things done to the car. It's generally a case of do it myself in the evenings or don't get it done at all. I can't even get days off without twelve weeks notice :( When I chipped a tooth recently it was seven weeks before I could see a dentist.

Plus if I can get the parts at cost and save

This should have all the info you need: Cruise Control How-to

I intend fitting cruise control when I get my Octavia total cost for parts is around

You need the parts listed in that how-to. The loom which isn't available from dealers can be bought from that site for

When I got my vRS, the dealer found the car I wanted but without cruise. They retrofitted it for me at their workshops. No extra costs or anything, its even covered by the extra warranty. I used Marshalls Skoda in Ipswich. I presume they wouldn't mind retrofitting it to anyone elses car.

stop being a cheap ass and get it done properly.. cruise control could be very dangerous if done wrong is your life worth

You do seem to have confused me with someone else.....

I do have no idea of your knowledge but your post indicates you are unfamiliar with the workings of an Octavia's ECU. I have done more than a little work on my Octy but cruise was one thing i left to someone with experience....

on the other hand if you are just looking for a good argument:thumbup:

LOL! Hardly here to argue, I'm here to make friends, not enemies. :grouphug:

I started this thread to confirm exactly what parts were required to do a job. Nothing more, nothing less. I asked because I had read, and been told by several dealers, several different stories. The inner workings of ECUs are by no means an area in which I would claim to be an expert, but in all fairness there isn't really anything that I actually need to DO to the ECU, just the wiring, fitting a stalk, and enabling the cruise control functionality. None of which fill me with a sense of dread. Yet. ;)

Why do you do so much work on your car? Is it for the challenge? Or just because you want to? For my own part, I would simply say, if I don't try it, how will I ever know whether or not I am capable of doing it? I'm not scared of failure, but I'll never be able to fail until I try.

Paul does so much to his car as he has a secret plan to collect the skin off the knuckles of all his friends and construct an organic weapon of mass destruction, certain to give him world leader status with his demands.

Paul:

Is just wiring, not everyone wants to hand over their pride n joy and let someone else make it what it is, surely you would not feel the same passion for your red baron if it had simply been "prepped" by a motorsport company? Far more enjoyable to know, that as with enough monkeys, typewriters, and the works of shakespear, the late hours, cursing, and endless quest to remove things, we have happened upon a setup that works?
