Small footprint PC?

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a nice small footprint PC. I'm not bothered about AMD or Intel, just need a decent amount of RAM (I'll probably give in and go Vista), a nice big HDD, DVD-RW and the usual connectivity. I've got monitors, so I don't need one of them. I also don't want another laptop. I've always built my own in the past, but it doesn't seem to save you much these days and, to be honest, I can't be @rsed with finding a micro ATX case, motherboard, CPU etc. Just want a small box so I can get shot of the huge tower case that my current PC consists of.

Anyone?

Hmmmmmmmm

They might be a bit over the top -all I really want is a reasonable PC in a smaller box, without fiddling about building it myself.

Maybe I'll price up a home brew of some sort.

How powerful do you need it.

The atom and via eden boards are fine for office and very low power useage.

If you don't want to go to the extreme of ITX-sized boxes, something like a Shuttle/iDEQ might be worth a look - in terms of footprint not massively smaller than a typical tower, but overall dimensions make them quite a bit smaller.

In terms of building, it's about as easy as it gets as they're laid out so well - pop in a CPU, memory, hard disk and optical drive and you're away. :)

Dell Optiplex 740 Small form factor is the smallish one i was going to go for before I decided the next size up would fit where I wanted it to go. Not massively small but runs the V word well enough. Runs Linux without even breaking a sweat!

Runs Windoze if needed, either parallel or dual boot.

I'm sure you've considered this problem, but I had an ultra slimline PC case with some high end components inside, which kept melting due to the heat. Went through 4 graphics cars, a motherboard, a PSU, and a TV card and Modem.

It was a PC World Philips type effort though so I should have realised!

I can highly recommend the Fuji-Siemens Esprimo er cant remember the exact number but any F-S should serve you well. Working in a school you get to know what stands up to kids hammering the things all day and what doesnt ad our Fuji's just keep on going where the HP's and Acers we had more recnetly have fallen by the wayside.

How small do you need> Dell's business class Optiplex desktops are pretty small. I have one at work it'll be about 40cm square and 12cm tall. Cheap too.

I ended up going a slightly different route, and bought one of these, which is a pretty good price for a quad core machine. Very good delivery service from Tesco, too.

Machine is in and working, and despite Vista driving me nuts with it's "do you really want to? Honestly?" Whinging, it seems pretty good.

All I need to do now is clear out my two old PC's, scanner and other odds and sods and I'll be straight. Thanks for everyones input by the way.
