Help me find an engine... 1.8T or 1.6 16V

Featured Replies

Hey guys, so the engine conversion is going ahead, with much help from The Phirm. I have to source my own engine though I'm looking for either a 1.8T from a lof or seat or a 1.6 16V from a polo or lupo. Prefrebly with ECU, loom, clocks and as much of the pipework as possible... any ideas folks?

Thanks,

Duggie.

Yeah scrappie or breakers yard.

With metal prices as they are at the moment, its not going to be cheap.

Espesh for one with relativly low mileage.

I seem to end up in a scrap yard at sometime during the week so will keep an eye out for you.!

You looking for VAG... or any make.?

I'll keep an eye out for passats, A3/4's, and Golfs.

Thanks Joel, I havn't been too lucky with my e-bay searches, how would I go about contacting a scrapyard? I don't know of any in or around Oxford.

It has to be a VAG really, and ideally with the gearbox still attatched or included. Keeping an eye out at a scrappy would be very helpful of you! I'm expecting about a grand for the engine itself.

Go onto Yell.com and type in scrap yard and your postcode and should come up with plenty.

They are everywhere.!

So many crashed cars.!

lol

They will tell you what cars they have over the phone... if your lucky, but you will most likely have to go down and search. Some arent very useful... they arent good sales men.! lol

But some will have every part they own listed, and tell you exactly what they have, and what condition it is in.!

Thanks guys, I know now that it seems relitively easy to get hold of the engine, the phirm are fully booked 'till January for engine conversions so nothing will be happening until then... thought i'd get the engine lined up though.

Well it will be stupidly quick when done. I would say try and get 6 gears if you want decent motorway driving, and an exceptable mpg.!

How much is the conversion costing you.? (excluding engine)

Hows the insurance going to be.?

You'll only be 19 wont you.? eeeek.?

Right, the funding side, the conversion is costing £5000, plus the engine itself... (yea, ok guys you'll all tell me to buy a different car instead but poo to you all... the dub scene is about expressing yourself and creating a one off...). The money is coming from an insurance claim... I have a very bad back caused by a car accident in the past... looks like a few grand coming my way. The insurance is not an issue... I have a very very very very very (you get the idea) nice friend that works for a certain insurance company quite high up... he is sorting that for me. The sixth gear will be a must otherwise it will eat fuel.... but yea, it is going to be fast... faster than a standard VRS anyway.

Thanks guys.

The five and six speed final gears arent that different, its everything in between that is moved closer together. But If you can I would get a 2wd 6spd (02M) gearbox.

The phirm know what they are doing so I say go for it and best of luck.

Thamks for the advice Lummox, i'll search for one of those. I've heard nothing but good things about the Phirm so I hope I have made the right choice!

i undeerstand wanting something different but is it worth it? 6k for a 1.8t fabia when you could buy a 1.8T ibiza from 3k upwards and 5k gets a lovely one with low milage and remap/exhaust etc.

even if you gave your car away you would be lots better off both through the buying and insurance costs.

best of luck if you go ahead with it but doing it for the sake of it seems silly to me.

sorry to keep asking questions but what does the 5k include?

when you say that you have to supply the engine do you also have to supply the gearbox/driveshafts/ecu/loom etc etc?

is the 5k simply to make the thing fit and look nice?

  • Author

The 5K is for custom driveshafts, custom code remap to get it running smoothly, suspension and brake upgrade to cope with the extra power and a custom clutch, plus fitting the thing and yes, making it "look pretty". I have to supply the engine, gearbox, loom, clocks and pipework. Sorry to say it mate, i love the fabia, TBH i know this sounds weird, but I wouldn't be bothered if I knew that it would be the only car i would ever own, I want to get it just right... and create something of my own.

Just for the record... I wouldn't be seen dead in an Ibiza... they are f**kugly and too modern-looking for me.

-Duggie.

You wont get a MK4 Ibiza 1.8T for £3k let alone a 225bhp engined one which you could have. Driveshafts will be an off the shelf item no need for custom ones to be made, same with clutch etc. Knowing the hours of work that will go into getting it running right etc i'd say £5k is a very realistic price and pretty good. You have always been determined that this is what you want to do so I say good on you.

my mate bought a seat leon cupra 1.8t all mapped for 2750 on an x plate i know its not an ibiza but i think the leon is a better car

i know its all about being individual but spending all that on the fab, your better off putting it towards something that bit more special thats just my opinion.

You could buy a MK4 1.8T cheaper than that, is a Leon Cupra more special than a 1.8T Fabia? I'd say not, can get a Leon Cupra anywhere.

Just playing devils advocate, is it worth putting a near 300bhp 1.8T engine in a MK2 Golf, not really but i'm enjoying doing it.

do you declare your mods to your insurance company, because most people who tart up standard cars dont and think its a way of beating the system and if you do they just load the fook out of you and as for a 1.8t fabia why dont you just get a golf

/jealous

I think it's a great thing to do, and I say go for it if this is the way you want to go about it

The only thing is......... If I wanted to do a conversion I'd love to have a go myself at doing it, just for the sheer satisfaction. But obviously there are instances where people can't do it theirselves!

It's not about just buying another car though is it! This is about passion and having something almost unheard of (in the fabia world)

It will be a total sleeper and something that the lad want's to achieve!

Because, as Lummox has said, what's personal about that? I could go out and buy a 1.8T golf but I coudn't with a 1.8T fabia... I'll say no more.

Thanks to the supporters and a big blown rasberry to the haters!
