had my vrs since march and last night the turbo blew its under warenty but it still not good. the rac bloke said its a common fault. is it?

i had it remapped (will take it off before going to skoda) but the rac bloke said it would of probably blown anyway with out a remap. it hasn't blown one of the oil seals has gone so the engine is all ok still but what do you guys think

cheers for any help

felix:rolleyes:

Skoda will probably see that it has been remapped. Might well mean you have the full cost yourself. The map is easily detectable if they are looking for it...

Sorry!

There have been a number of blown turbos, but common? no, I dont think so. Maybe 5 out of all the Fabia vRS owners on this forum.

bummer.

Well you have to see if it gets covered under warranty (which is shouldn't as it's been remapped).

A proper upgraded turbo would be more expensive than an OEM replacement, but it's easy to swap them over (did mine myself) and by saving on the labour you could justify a proper uprated one. Several of our site sponsors provide them fairly fast....

Good luck

i'm having the map taken off before it goes to skoda

However Skoda employees are on this site so make sure your car details aint on here.

the rac guy said it was common on the engine not the vrs because vw use this engine in almost every model and audi and seat lol but it is a good engine how much was the upgraded turbo dude

i think the problem is how they are driven rather than that they are weak,i have a savage map on mine, its been to the ring and done a couple of tackdays in between,i allways allow it to warm up and cool down and have had no problem, on my 04 vrs i blew the turbo with under 100 miles on the clock thrashing it from cold when completly bog standard:thumbup:

the vrs is the only engine to use the weak kkk turbo tho, they shouldn't really be blowing with the stronger garrat unit

yeah i'm diesel technician and know all bout that and do the same but its still blown maybe ur lucky lol

or unlucky i had ne go in the first week of ownership:rofl:maybe it is indeed luck of the draw

Mine went pop a while back, 65k, out of warranty.

The nut on the end of the compressor wheel came adrift/sheared off and boy did it make some noise!

I think the KKK turbo is not as strong as the Garrett one, not sure why Skoda opted for them from the VW factory, (probably cheaper than Garrett ones??)

I have heard before that a map is detectable even if you take it off, not sure if it's to do with the on board management computers telling Skoda when they plug the wotzit into the car?

If they do find it and won't cover it on warranty, get a Garrett instead if it's affordable to you.

In defence of the KKK turbo, it's only that fact that all (not sure about later ones though), the Fabia vRS's have these turbo's that we hear bad press about them, I'm sure if it were all Garrett there wuld still be one or two go pop during the life of the car.

Does anybody know if the KKK are on all the TDi engines that Skoda use in the whole range, not just the vRS's?

I hear from a tuner - there's no pattern, rhyme or reason to whether a vRS has a KKK or a Garrett - pure luck of the draw, but mostly KKK......

That's a bummer, at the week-end in particular, felix_19

Without a disassembly job, is it possible to tell? I can't see any part-number or name looking down from under the bonnet

A5 Octy also has KKK turbo,s

Yes, the KKK will have a small silver plate nailed onto the side of the turbo, not sure if the Garrett has one, but it does say garrett on the compressor housing.

You can buy my turbo

its a garrett gt1749va built to stage 2 hybrid by turbo dynamics

good for 250 bhp on these engines so it will last ;)

Does re-mapping mean the turbo is more likely to blow?

depends on what boost pressure they put the turbo too. the fabia vrs turbo is over the limit at 3 bar.

how much for the turbo skudmissle?

Possibly going against the grain, but you remapped the car knowing the risk, so how can you then expect skoda and therfore all people who buy skodas and have them serviced at skoda pay for your repairs?

Fair point. But what if the turbo had a fault which meant it would have failed anyway?

How could you possibly prove one way or another?

I agree that if you have a remap done it will put extra strain on components and their failure is a risk you have to take.

remap increaces boost pressure not oil pressure and that wats gone an oil seal

Also the Seat Ibiza FR TDi has the same KKK turbo, ive blown three up! Well not true really, the first one the vanes were sticking, 2nd blow up and this 3rd one I got bored with so changed the map to peak at 2BAR so thats melting as we speak..

Fun times :)

If Skoda discovers a remap on there, I would think they will wash their hands of it...regardless of the oil seal as you have modded it in the warranty period and if you change it from new, I'm not sure Skoda have to honour the warranty for the engine and components.

be interesting what they have to say when you take it in.

Way over the limit, max turbo pressure of the standard turbo is around 1.6 bar. 2.0 bar for a hybrid unit.

oh right thats cool 2 no ches dudey

My stage 2 TD made 226bhp running only 1.8 bar ;)

At 2.bar it made 248bhp but was a little more laggy, so we turned the request back to 1.8 which turbo dynamics specs for the turbo.

Ps Turbo still for sale
