Felly Auxiliary Drivebelt and Alternator

Featured Replies

Last week, the battery light on the dash start to light up, but tend to fade while the revos went up. Until this morning... :P

So, I had a look down there, and concluded in a dead regulator module, which one of the brushes is very small compare to the other.

So, my guess is : Brush too short to make contact result in a discharged battery. I'll shop for that tomorrow with a new auxiliary drivebelt. This one is dead! Crackling and some of the inside is worn, or gone...

Question : What is the correct tensioning technique while mounting it back up..?

I suppose too loose or too tight is not good, how can I do it right, as it'll be my first time?

That wear is intriguing. Both the one's I've seen have worn evenly. Is the shorter one still sprung? I wonder if a new alternator may be a better option if it's going to eat voltage regulators for breakfast.

To tension the belt, the alternator pivots. It's best to try have the bolts only just loosened enough to move everything so you can move until you get the correct tension. Apparently with around 2kg pressure applied, the belt should deflect by around 10 to 15mm.

Yes, the shorter one still move back and forward helped by the spring!

I'll give a chance to change the voltage regulator first, I'll keep looking at it!

Can we change the copper rings where the brushes make contact with..?

Or it's just a complete alternator change..?

Thanks for the tension thing! ;)

I read that there is a direction for the belt... Which one is the right one..?

I think they're just ribbed belts. I am sure if there was any direction it should go it would be marked on the belt - but I think they should be fine either way.

So, here is the news!

Since Jorily is on holidays, and that the only place I saw a voltage regulator, I tried the local motor factors! With no luck... :(

But they send me to automotive electricians around the city, and I found one guy who just replace one of the brush by a new one! :D

Total cost for the auxiliary drivebelt and the voltage regulator fix : 14€!!!

Just need to play with some tools, and try out!

(To be continued...) ;)

If you think the copper "slip rings" that the carbon brushes wun on are worn out, you'll need an exchange alternator. replacing the slip rings can be done, but needs special equipment to keep from losing the magnetism in the alternator stator unit when you remove the rotor.

I did put back the fixed regulator and the new drivebelt.

The battery was recharging over the night, and everything when fine this morning!

I'll keep an eye on this wearing issue! Thanks for your help! ;)
