vRS Poor MPG When Calculated on Paper

Featured Replies

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on my poor MPG. The computer said I did 57MPG.

I done 407 miles and the fuel light came on. In theory this means I have around 7.5 litres remianing. The trip computer said this equates to about 75 miles.

Now the total assuming I managed the 75 miles whoud be about 480 miles on a 45 litre tank. This works out at 48MPG.

I know the computer lies but to be 9MPG out is quite a lot. I see some people are squeezing out 550 or 600 miles on a tank.

My journeys are about 80% motorway I drive like a granny and AC is not on all the time. The only factor I can think of is that my VRS has only done 9.5k miles and perhaps the engine has worn in yet?

Any ideas?

Yes your cars mileage is very low.As time goes on you should see an improvement for sure:thumbup:

The trip computer lies mate, it's less trustworthy than a politician :D

48mpg sounds about right for an average consumption figure although for 80% motorway driving I'd expect a higher figure.

For mixed driving I can normally see 530 miles out of a tank but I use the vent trick when I fill up, usually around 52 litres, which gives me a pretty much rock-steady average of 46mpg. The trip comp on the otherhand will always tell me it's 49-51mpg

the trip computer works out your mpg on your previous 5 minsor so of driving .

I thought it was the last 50 miles?

.. and the A/C runs permanently so you probably won't see much change whether the cabin switch is on or off.

its based on something like that i know by the time i get to the end of the road it starts to calculate and by the time i get to work it has figures. couldnt remember if its 50 miles or 5 mins...

dont forget people who may be getting 600+ miles might be using the expansion tank!!!

or just talk out there backside lol

if the car is new try and get a good few thousand miles under its belt first and try again.

600+ miles not that hard. I managed 656 from my last tank, trip computer said i had 10 miles left and managed to squeeze 54.49L for the sum of £71.88:eek:.

Oh and my computer is probably the least accurate in history, on average it reads about 40% over

Length of journey makes a big difference, as much as anything else. Over 15 miles and you can probably achieve respectable mileage.

Don't discount the amount of fuel used to cold start and warm the engine up each morning. After 5 miles non-motorway travel, mine has maybe just crept up to 40mpg. Yet I can achieve 50+ by the time I get to work.

J.

From delivery to circa 14,000 miles mine would show 55+ on the computer, but would average 38-40

All of this trip computer stuff is really confusing. I think it is down to driving style.

I think that the trip computer does some estimating. Some styles of driving suit this estimation (ie, the driving style is as the computer predicts). This would explain why some trip computers are out by miles, and others, like mine, are consistently out by between 1 and 3 percent, with which I am not at all concerned.

Let me give you an example from my own experiences.

Driving style A

Smooth, but not particularly slow driving, usually accelerating with engine RPM between 1900 and 2700RPM.

The trip computer in this instance is usually out by a tiny amount.

Driving style B

Harder acceleration, not so "smooth", usually engine RPM between 2300 and 3600 whilst accelerating

The trip computer in this instance is more inaccurate

My guess is all the people around here who are complaining about computer trip inaccuracies drive, not necessarily as driving style B, but in a way that the computer has not predicted when it can not make accurate fuel consumption measurements. Thoughts?

Also, I think that the running in of the engine has something to do with it. My engine has done 51k miles, and the computer is pretty much, as said above, smack on with the actual MPG I get.

600+ miles not that hard. I managed 656 from my last tank, trip computer said i had 10 miles left ...

 You must be doing some serious motorway cruising to see that much out of a tank! Trust me, using it on normal 'everyday' driving, it can be "that hard" getting it over 500 miles from a tank

54.65 MPG - not bad!

just beats mine from last week , 647miles with no miles left

earlier fuel computers seem to be more accurate than the later ones

Keep the revs down - vRS at max 1500RPM will easily top 65mpg+

It will also make the vanes in the turbo stick if you do it all the time :(

Yeah, 2 trips from York to Nottingham accounted for most of it, so mostly main roads..................but yes it wasn't the most fun driving i've experienced:(.

Not sure that using ventectomy is a good idea, putting £70 of fuel in a time just makes it more depressing.

I get around the same as you 50,000 miles on the clock, driven mostly on motorways, bit of all sorts driving. HTH

Trip comp says average around 63MPG. I wish

Thanks guys. I will see how it goes. It was my birthday so I treated my vRS to a tank of BP Ultimate. So far the computer reports 4MPG more than usual, I suspect it's telling porkies though. I also managed to spill a good half litre on my leg and shoes and down the sides of my car! The stupid pump didn't cut out :(

When I had mine over 20k miles it averaged 41mpg but around 50mpg on the trip comp. Best way to get decent mileage is to forget supermarket fuel.

I've always run it on Shell or BP since I've had it. I don't trust the supermarkets with their cheap fuels.
