skoda octavia cam belt

Featured Replies

hello..hw u doin??

now my skoda is a 2001 model.. and it has done 100,000 kms so just wondering when should i get the cam belt changed?? and also if any other parts needed to be replaced??..it runs allright but i some times feel that it has gone a little bit rough.

cheers

Hiya. Is it petrol or diesel, and where are you? (or is your name a blatent clue?)

the cambelt is overdue now. Get it done with your next service.

You dont say what service history the car has, but if its not had its cambelt changed yet, then its overdue so should be done asap. If it feels rough it could simply be needing a thorough servicing.

You should consider renewing/replacing the following as a minimum:

  • engine oil & filter (use an engine oil flush)
  • air filter
  • fuel filter
  • gearbox oil should also be done every 100,000KM imho
  • if its petrol replace the sparks

That should do you a while given that you'll have a cambelt to change too. $$$ :(

Good idea while you are getting the cam belt changed is to fit a new metal water pump, your plastic one is probably knackered by now. Just done a belt and pump change on my '54 VRS at 29k and the impeller was in bits. Got mine from Folletts 'bout £30. Good service as well!!

Cambelt KIT (inc tensioner/rollers), water pump & coolant change, major service, EGR delete, gearbox oil change & linkage lube. That should be a good service to start you off.

Hi, I can put you in contact with a company in Auckland who can get you the cam belt kit cheaper - I was quoted $850 for parts from the Skoda dealer and $500 from them so a decent saving!! Let me know :)

They do the pumps with metal impellers as well.

True - you're all in flippin' Auckland though :D

Had my cambelt and waterpump changed the other day as I had no coolant flowing, I had visions of the pump coming out in many, many pieces. Fortunately the whole impellor had separated from the shaft so it was not spinning, and the bearing must have gone as the pump did not spin freely. The original pump lasted 94k The cambelt was changed only a year ago at 80k and looked fine.

Hey Nathan,

Glad you got it done after all, that was pretty quick.

Do you mind if I ask the price and if it was VW/aftermarket and did it have new coolant/any other parts?

Cheers, Greg.

Sorry, i'm never clear when i talk about cambelts, but you should always replace them as a full kit including tensioners and any rollers. I just assume because I always replace the lot, other folk do too. Have done ever since i had a cambelt change on a fiat, and then 6 months later the tensioner went and the belt slipped off (miraculously, no valve damage!)

Good man!

Hi back Mark. As others, replace the water pump when the end of the engine is down anyway. It's a petrol, so the water pump is about due to go!

Hi guys :-) I've just joined as I was looking for advice on cam belts and found this fab forum! My Octavia is a 1.9 TDi and my lovely mechanic says it needs the cam belt changing as it looks like it's never been changed on the service history. Now done about 89, 300 miles. Has anyone any advice other than what has already been written on here please? Also, I read on another thread that the metal impeller on someone's car ground down the engine or something like that....

Cheers, Faye :)

Hi Faye,

Without going into the 'whys' so much, here is the info you need.

Yes it's ready and you should change it or risk a new engine if it breaks.

Yes the water pumps are fragile and it's much more economic to replace them at the same time. You can replace with aftermarket metal ones, or OE plastic ones - to be honest so long as it's replaced and your G12 coolant is replaced it doesn't really matter.

You should have the full cambelt KIT, not just belt, as the tensioner and pulleys bearings will be worn.

Best to buy/have a genuine parts fitted, as they come with a 2 year guarantee and a 'free replacement engine' guarantee if they break. Aftermarket are 1 year and it would be a court case over the engine. This and a perfect first time fit is why I only fit genuine now.

Your injection pump timing (if it's a 90 or 110hp octavia) will also need checking via computer, so only get the kit fitted by someone who has the kit to check the static timing dynamically with a computer/vag-com. Setting it with pins isn't accurate enough, though it will run it can't be guaranteed 'right'.

IMHO, HTH, LMAO (something funny on the tv)

Greg.

Wow. This site is brilliant. THANKS Greg :D

My lovely mechanic is going to grin at this one... I'm pretty cheeky with him anyway and when I waltz in making these specific :bullwhip: demands he's not gonna know who hit him :rkick:. Hahaha.

Cheers
